Mark Walker, a junior majoring in Russian studies, economics, and mathematics, has recently been awarded the prestigious Beinecke Scholarship, which he plans to put toward a graduate program in economics.

Madi Goetzke ’21 will spend a year traveling the world as a Watson fellow to analyze the role of communally-based cultural heritage sites which double as UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sites.

As a teaching assistant, Scholl will help Austrian students develop the linguistic skills needed to be fluent in English, while serving as an informal ambassador and promoting cross-cultural dialogue between the United States and the Republic of Austria. 

Ruth Bieber-Stanley ’21 has German ancestors and relatives on both sides of her family, but never learned to speak German as a child. Today, not only does she know the language, but uses it to have an even deeper connection with her heritage.

An appreciation of Japanese history, culture, and language makes being awarded an 91ֱ�� Shansi Fellowship and Critical Language Scholarship a dream come true for Jasmine Mitchell ’21.

“In learning a language, you open your eyes and mind to a whole new world of opportunities and people,” says Henry O’Connor ’24. As a Critical Language Scholarship recipient, he will spend the summer immersed in Mandarin.

Iesha-LaShay Phillips, a third-year Africana studies and law and society double-major, has been awarded the Campus Compact 2021 Newman Civic Fellowship after being nominated through the Bonner Center for Community-Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Research.

A law and society and Africana studies double major, Iesha-LaShay Phillips is one of 14 student leaders from across the country selected to participate in a summer study abroad program focused on leadership, intercultural communication, and social justice as a Frederick Douglass Global Fellow.
