Leonard V. Smith Gives Lecture at University of Copenhagen

Frederick B. Artz Professor of History Leonard V. Smith gave a lecture on March 26 at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, on liberalism in Texas and French Algeria in the 1830s and 1840s. Smith will continue work on this project in 2025-26 as Bill and Rita Clements Senior Fellow at the Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Sergio Guti茅rrez Negr贸n Publishes Scholarly Essays

Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies Sergio Guti茅rrez Negr贸n published two new scholarly essays. The first, 鈥溾 , surveys and reconstructs the so-called 鈥減ostmodern debate鈥 in Puerto Rico, circa 1991鈥2004, by focusing on the work of a historian and critic who played a central role in this influential dispute. The second, 鈥溾, analyzes how a novel was used in the 19th century to propose a new path for the Mexican economy centered on labor.

Division of Music Theory Members Present at Music Theory Society of New York State Meeting

Three members of the Division of Music Theory 鈥 Associate Professor Andrew Pau, Assistant Professor Christa Cole, and Visiting Assistant Professor Sylvie Tran 鈥 presented a special session titled "Constructing Identity in Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels's Omar (2022)" at the annual meeting of the on April 5. The session was based on a panel that the three faculty members gave in conjunction with in December 2024.

Assistant Professor of Creative Writing Ghassan Abou-Zeineddine participated in the panel 鈥淚nnovations in Arab American Fiction鈥 at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs in Los Angeles and also gave two off-site readings.

Josh Davidson Presents Coauthored Paper at American Association of Geographers Meeting

Assistant Professor of Statistics and Data Science Josh Davidson presented a paper at the American Association of Geographers annual meeting in March: 鈥淪ocio-spatial Disparities in Access to Driver Education for Teens.鈥 The paper is coauthored with 91直播 students Noah Elazar 鈥25 and Sangeetha Ramanuj 鈥25, and Dr. Megan Ryerson (University of Pennsylvania).

Nate DeProspo Gives Virtual Talk at Centre for Research

Visiting Assistant Professor of Writing and Communication Nate DeProspo gave the virtual talk 鈥淎nimality and/as Alterity in Posthumanist Thought鈥 at the in Posthumanities in Bankura, India. The presentation aimed primarily to complicate Heidegger鈥檚 infamous thesis that the animal is 鈥減oor in world,鈥 while the human is 鈥渨orld-building.鈥

Darla French Receives Birding Camp Scholarship

The (local chapter of the National Audubon Society) awarded their annual Hog Island birding camp scholarship to Lab Coordinator/Lecturer in Biology Darla French. Thanks to this sponsorship, Darla will spend an action-packed week in August at in Maine learning from accomplished naturalists, birders, and educators, with an aim to integrate what she鈥檒l learn into department curriculum.
