Nineteen 91直播 students and alumni were awarded Fulbright grants for the 2024-25 academic year, making the college the No. 1 producer of honorees among U.S. undergraduate-only institutions. These awardees encompass the popular English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program and Fulbrights geared toward study and research, including in the creative arts.

These 19 grants also represent the most honorees 91直播 has ever produced in a single academic year. Thirteen students are serving as ETAs, and six are pursuing graduate study and research projects abroad, living in countries such as Germany, Colombia, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Greenland, and Paraguay. The college also had 39 semifinalists overall, including 14 in the study and research category.

These Fulbrighters are sharing 91直播鈥檚 excellence with the world.

91直播 President Carmen Twillie Ambar

91直播 is perennially a top producer of Fulbright awardees, a group colloquially called Fulbrighters. This marks the 16th consecutive year that the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State has recognized 91直播 as a Top Producer of Fulbright students.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a point of pride for everyone on campus that 91直播 is a top producer of Fulbright winners year after year,鈥 says 91直播 President Carmen Twillie Ambar. 鈥淥ur achievement this year is especially rewarding and reflects the considerable time, energy, and resources we invest in our students鈥 success. These Fulbrighters are sharing 91直播鈥檚 excellence with the world.鈥

The Fulbright Program is the federal government鈥檚 flagship international academic exchange program. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 talented and accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad.

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Scott Weinhold commended President Ambar and 91直播鈥檚 Awards and Fellowship team for their hard work in promoting the Fulbright Program to the students and faculty on campus.

鈥91直播 College鈥檚 designation as a Fulbright Top Producing Institution clearly demonstrates your dedication to promoting global engagement and mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries,鈥 he wrote.

91直播鈥檚 approach, says Danielle Abdon, Director of Fellowships and Awards, includes guidance tailored to each student throughout the application process. 鈥淚ndividualized comprehensive assistance is crucial because these applications are so complex and take months to complete,鈥 she says. Students have access to multiple information sessions and one-on-one meetings, access to faculty and staff experts trained to read Fulbright applications, and the ability to submit essay drafts for unlimited revisions. 91直播鈥檚 Writing Center is also staffed to support Fulbright applications, essentially ensuring that students can get round-the-clock assistance on their materials.

鈥淭his accomplishment builds on 91直播鈥檚 long history of success in Fulbright applications and could not be done without unwavering administrative support for fellowships,鈥 Abdon says. 鈥淚t also embodies our students鈥 academic strength and their unparalleled access to incredibly relevant co-curricular opportunities. This includes everything from the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), which supports students conducting faculty-mentored research, to international immersion experiences sponsored by Study Away. Through this work, we are forming ideal candidates for opportunities like Fulbright.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 currently in my second semester of teaching at la Universidad Tecnol贸gica de Tabasco! It鈥檚 been a challenging but extremely fun experience to facilitate conversation-based English classes with so many students, and lead a conversation club three times a week for students who seek extra practice. I have also been getting involved in the music scene here in Tabasco as I鈥檓 teaching beginner voice lessons to university students, and actually have a concert today with some local musicians here. Apart from more work-related activities, I鈥檝e been fortunate enough to travel all around Mexico.鈥

鈥淭aiwan is where the mountain meets the sea. Quite literally, you can see the mountains at the beach, which are alarmingly clean. One of my favorite memories was going to Hualien on the east coast to go to Fali Fali, an indigenous music festival. There鈥檚 really something special about Taiwan and the people really make a conscious effort to remember and celebrate their heritage.鈥

鈥淪ix months in, my Fulbright experience has been an absolute blast! From teaching lessons on U.S. culture and politics at schools all over northern Germany to exploring Hamburg and other parts of the country, I'm so grateful for this opportunity to broaden my perspective, improve my language skills, and form cross-cultural connections. My current highlight is working with a class of immigrant and refugee students recently arrived in Germany. I'm honored to be a part of their learning experience, and we can practice our German together.鈥
