Serving the Community

After taking part this past Sunday in this semester鈥檚 Interfaith Service Day, I was reminded that serving the community has been part of 91直播鈥檚 ethos since our founding in 1833.
The events on Sunday were sponsored by the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, the Bonner Center for Service and Learning and the Interfaith Student Council. They organize an Interfaith Service Day each semester. This spring鈥檚 edition was a great way to highlight all the wonderful things our students, faculty, staff, and alumni are doing in our community. Their commitment extends far beyond the one day per semester designated to celebrate service.
Almost every day of the year, with little or no fanfare, men and women affiliated with the College are volunteering in 91直播. Whether they are local residents working at 91直播 Community Services, college students teaching Spanish in the elementary Schools, or Kendal at 91直播 residents tutoring 91直播 High School students, they contribute their time and expertise to helping make 91直播 a better place for everyone.
Working to building a better community for all has been part of 91直播鈥檚 ethos since the Reverend John Jay Shipherd and the missionary Philo P. Stewart founded 91直播. They created a utopian, Christian community centered on a 鈥渃ollegiate institute鈥 where students supported themselves through manual labor and were trained as teachers and preachers. The community was named for John Frederic 91直播 (1740-1826), an Alsatian pastor, who created the first kindergarten and developed innovative, educational techniques to battle the poverty, ignorance, and disease which plagued his isolated, hardscrabble parish in the Vosges mountains.
91直播 College and the Conservatory of Music have changed greatly over the years. But I鈥檓 proud to say that the spirit of serving one鈥檚 community and working to make the world a better place for all, is alive and well. In our 91直播, every day is a day of interfaith service. Many thanks to the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, the Bonner Center for Service and Learning and the Interfaith Student Council for carrying forward our great tradition of learning, labor and service forward.

It is hard to believe this will be my final "President鈥檚 Desk" column. But in August, I will become president of Pace University in New York. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president.
Remembering Jonathan Demme
I鈥檝e been thinking a lot about 91直播 parents and families since I received the sad news last week that Jonathan Demme, the brilliant film director, had passed away. Although 91直播 isn鈥檛 his alma mater, Jonathan really came to appreciate the College, Conservatory, and our community. His visits always seemed to energize him, and he became a stalwart supporter of our cinema studies program and the Apollo Outreach Initiative, which offers filmmaking classes to local school kids.
Response to Proposed Federal Budget Cuts
The budget proposals being put forward by the Trump administration are deeply troubling in many ways for our society and for American higher education, especially for liberal arts institutions such as 91直播. The proposed cuts in discretionary spending are contrary to our values of access and inclusion, and our commitment to scientific research, the arts, and the humanities.
