Doherty is a longtime listener of the show. “I've been a fan of the show since it started airing in 1999, when I was doing my AmeriCorps year after college,” says Doherty. “It makes me laugh, perhaps most especially on the weeks when the news is darkest.”

One Sunday on a whim, Doherty called the show’s “be a contestant” number, and the next day a producer contacted her to be on that week’s program.

“The whole process was really fast! I got to call in a little early and listen to the preshow warm up that host Peter Sagal does with the live audience, and then I was on the air,” says Doherty. “The parts of the conversation that didn't make it to radio included Peter mentioning his niece who graduated from 91ֱ��, and me talking about how great 91ֱ�� students are.”
