The family-friendly event is free and open to the public.

A showcase of student performers at the 91ֱ Conservatory, the Children’s Concert opens with organ music performed by Matthew Buller ’16 on Finney Chapel’s enormous C.B. The 45-minute program will also feature a women’s chorale under the direction of Professor of Music Education Jody Kerchner, a string sextet, and a jazz combo.

Students from Eastwood Elementary and Prospect Elementary School in 91ֱ, Powers Elementary in Amherst, the 91ֱ Early Childhood Center, and guests from the Murray Ridge Center will attend the performance. Members of the community are also encouraged to take part.

A leading innovator in preschool music education, Bennett has been a member of the 91ֱ faculty since 2001. She developed a learning tool for teachers and parents called SongWorks for Children, an online database of videos created while teaching children in the MusicPlay program. She has also published numerous books on the subject of music education pedagogy.

News Releases

Wed, 04/16/2014 - 12:00

Conservatory Communications Staff

Community Education

Conservatory

Off

false

Dale Preston

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:04:10 +0000 eburnett 11346 at Apollo Outreach Initiative Hosts Program for Local Students /news/apollo-outreach-initiative-hosts-program-local-students Apollo Outreach Initiative Hosts Program for Local Students Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:04

On Thursday, November 21, the Apollo Outreach Initiative (AOI), a media literacy program run by 91ֱ’s cinema studies department, will host a film screening centered on sustainable agriculture for area high school and middle school students. Entitled “Food for Thought,” the program features two documentaries, Hungry for Health, a short documentary by Theresa DeSautels ’10 that shows one Cleveland woman’s difficulties in finding healthy food; and Polycultures: Food Where We Live, a feature-length documentary by Brad Masi ‘93 about local food growers in Northeast Ohio .

After the screening, AOI Media Education Consultant Sam Phillips will host a conversation about the film with the students, who will also leave the event with a booklet full of recipes. Food for Thought will be catered with local food from vendors Shagbark Seed and Mill, and prepared by Dave Sokoll, chef at the 91ֱ Early Childhood Center.

Phillips says that 91ֱ students in the cinema studies program’s AOI class have been integral in putting this program together, creating the recipe book, and coordinating logistics.

Students attending the Food for Thought program are in 91ֱ City Schools and Firelands Local Schools. Participating classrooms prepared for the event with an educational slide show about food justice issues.

“I hope that this actually empowers kids to get involved in these sustainability projects that are happening in their communities,” says Phillips. “The other goal is to get teachers excited about collaborating with the Apollo.”

Phillips says that AOI hopes to host similar events in the future. In the meantime, the organization is continuing its media literacy efforts in the community the following day, November 22, with an interactive media workshop for all ages, entitled “Playtime,” from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the 91ֱ Public Library.

News Releases

Mon, 11/18/2013 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Community

Community Education

Cinema and Media

Cinema and Media

The Apollo Theatre, where Food for Thought will take place, lit up at night.

Jeff Hagan

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:04:25 +0000 Anonymous 11686 at Community Music School Celebrates 10 Years /news/community-music-school-celebrates-10-years Community Music School Celebrates 10 Years eburnett Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:04

The Community Music School (CMS) at the 91ֱ Conservatory will present a “Mega Musical Mash-up: A Festival of Community Music” on June 2. It will be the culminating event in a series of ten concerts and musical events put on to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the CMS.

The event will include performances by a variety of ensembles from 91ֱ, including the Community Music School, the 91ֱ Choristers, the 91ֱ High School Concert Choir, and many others. There will also be family-friendly participatory music-making activities, such as a chance to make your own instrument, the opportunity to try your own hand at playing an instrument in the instrument petting zoo, and free ice cream. This free event will be from 3:00 pm to 5:30 p.m. in Tappan Square (or Warner Concert Hall if it rains) and is open to the public.

The Community Music School, recently selected as Lorain County’s “Best Music Instruction” by Pulse magazine, serves as a major outreach program for the conservatory, and is successful partly due to its accessibility. Music lessons can be quite expensive, but at the CMS students can get scholarships to fund their lessons and lending programs help students obtain instruments. The school has expanded greatly from its start with a few dozen students in 2002. About 240 students now receive instruction from 20 professional teachers from the 91ֱ area.

For the 2013-14 year, the Community Music School plans to add adult chamber music instruction to its program. Also in the fall, the school is planning to begin a class on technology in music for middle school and high school students, especially geared toward girls. Students would learn electronic composition and how to use synthesizers, microphones, and mixing techniques in cooperation with 91ֱ Conservatory’s TIMARA department and professor Tom Lopez. On similar lines, the school is exploring the option of creating a radio DJ workshop in collaboration with WOBC.

All of this is made possible in part by the valuable support the CMS has received from the Kulas Foundation and the Nord Foundation. In addition, this coming year, an anonymous donor will match contributions to the CMS up to $7,500 with the goal of reaching this amount by May 2014.

In addition to the focus on outreach and accessibility, the Community Music School is committed to “music as a vehicle of social activism,” as director Louise Zeitlin describes it—using the social connections provided by music and music education to work for the benefit of society. This year’s program raised money to support local service organizations, and in previous years the school has supported such worthy causes as tsunami relief in Japan, Harvest for Hunger and earthquake relief in Haiti. At the Mega Musical Mash-up, the CMS will ask for donations to aid 91ֱ Community Services.

For more information about the Community Music School, visit the school’s webpage.

News Releases

Mon, 05/13/2013 - 12:00

Logan Buckley

Conservatory

Community Education

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:04:39 +0000 eburnett 12031 at
