Held on the beautiful campus of 91ֱ�� College & Conservatory, this dynamic program is named in honor of the legendary jazz bassist, a prolific performer and studio musician whose long career intersected with many of the greatest artists of the 20th century.</p> <p>Designed for bass students ages 13-21 of all ability levels, the Hinton Institute consists of a week of master classes, performances, bass ensembles, studio sessions, lectures, and workshops. It focuses on a comprehensive range of genres: classical, early music, jazz, slap, Latin, and electric.</p> <p>For the first time, the 2016 institute features Suzuki teacher-training opportunities for participants 18 years and older. Teacher-training courses include Every Child Can and Bass Book 1, with leading Suzuki trainers Virginia Dixon and Kimberly Meier-Sims. Every Child Can is a one-day course introducing the Suzuki philosophy and method, and is a prerequisite for all Suzuki courses that follow. Participants for the Suzuki Bass Book 1 course must pass an audition and be an active member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas.</p> <p>In addition, young bass students (ages 5-12) of all ability levels will have opportunities for afternoon Suzuki instruction.</p> <p>Directed by 91ֱ��’s Professor of Jazz Studies and Double Bass Peter Dominguez, the Hinton Institute features a host of the nation’s finest teachers and performers across a variety of styles: John Clayton Jr., Max Dimoff, <a href="https://new.oberlin.edu/conservatory/departments/strings/faculty_detail.dot?id=2820000">Scott Dixon</a>, Diana Gannett, Robert Hurst III, Mimi Jones, John Kennedy, Audrey Melzer, <a href="https://new.oberlin.edu/conservatory/departments/strings/faculty_detail.dot?id=3903230">Tracy Rowell</a>, Donovan Stokes, Inez Wyrick, and <a href="https://new.oberlin.edu/conservatory/departments/strings/faculty_detail.dot?id=37300274-54ef-4549-908c-17d0cbaecb79">Derek Zadinsky</a>.</p> <p>In addition to his standout performing career, Milt Hinton faithfully documented his own life and its many musical intersections through photography. The excitement culminates on Friday, July 22, as three finalists perform complete concertos with the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall in Cleveland, under the direction of Jahja Ling. The winner takes home the $20,000 first prize, with $10,000 and $5,000 awarded for second and third place, respectively. Each finalist’s prize package also includes a full four-year tuition scholarship to attend the 91ֱ�� Conservatory of Music.</p> <p>Also new for 2016: A travel-assistance fund will be available to competition participants on a case-by-case basis.</p> <p>“We are thrilled to collaborate with the Cleveland Orchestra once again as we celebrate the best young piano talent in the world,” says 91ֱ�� Professor of Piano <a href="/node/6776">Robert Shannon</a>, director and jury chair of the 2016 Cooper Competition. “Interest from students around the world is already high, and this should be an even more fabulous event than ever before.”</p> <p>In addition to the top prizes, the competition awards $1,500 to each of the fourth- through sixth-place winners, and also grants an Audience Prize of $500. These are presented at the conclusion of the Recital Final Round in 91ֱ�� on Wednesday, July 20. An Honors Concert, featuring pianists who delivered the most moving performances during the week, will be held at 91ֱ�� Thursday, July 21.</p> <p>The 2016 jury is a panel of esteemed pianists consisting of 91ֱ�� Conservatory faculty and acclaimed performer-pedagogues from throughout the world. This year marked Kastner's third trip to the Cooper Competition, following appearances in 2011 and 2013.</p> <p>Ting opened the evening with Alexander Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A Minor, Opus 82. Kastner ended it with Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77. Each earned a grand prize of $10,000.</p> <p>Fifteen-year-old Joshua Brown of Gurnee, Illinois, earned second prize for his performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 77.</p> <p>All three finalists earned full-tuition scholarships to the 91ֱ�� Conservatory, valued at nearly $200,000 each.</p> <p>The jury, made up of 91ֱ�� Conservatory faculty Gregory Fulkerson and David Bowlin, as well as internationally renowned performers and pedagogues Margaret Pressley, Peter Herresthal, Dora Schwarzberg, and Tong Weidong, deliberated for nearly 30 minutes before revealing its decision.</p> <p>The tie for first place is the second in the competition's six-year history. In 2013, violinists Kyumin Park of South Korea and William Ching-Yi Wei of Taiwan shared top honors. Kastner is the first top-prize winner to hail from the United States since pianist George Li won the inaugural Cooper Competition in 2010.</p> <p>The Cooper Competition is presented each July by the 91ֱ�� Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Orchestra, and alternates each year between piano and violin. The program, which runs from July 20 to August 2, will see students exploring sustainability from a multi-issue perspective, covering energy and climate, food, natural resources, and, land use, as well as the economic and social, environmental dimensions of sustainability.</p> <p>FLSI@91ֱ�� will bring 18 teenagers from across the world to 91ֱ��. Students will take classes on sustainability and visit green facilities throughout the region including Ohio City Farm, one of the nation's largest urban farms, and Trail Magic, a solar-powered home in 91ֱ�� with energy-generating features that allow it to give power back to the grid. While at 91ֱ��, students will stay in Robert Kahn Hall, a LEED Silver residence hall, and study in Adam Joseph Lewis Center, named the most important green building constructed in the last thirty years by Architect Magazine.</p> <p>The program, which prioritizes interactions with "real world" practitioners will find students meeting with sustainability leaders from across the region, including Ted Howard of the Democracy Collaborative and Evergreen Cooperatives, Jim Rokakis ’77, Director of the Thriving Communities Institute at the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, and Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics and Special Assistant to the President of Environmental Studies David W. The concert, entitled An Evening of British Art Songs on texts of Shakespeare, will include works by Sir Hubert Parry and Gerald Finzi. Stinson will be accompanied by pianist Monica Vanderveen ’88, a vocal coach and collaborative artist who has held positions with the Juilliard School, San Francisco Opera and Aspen Music Festival. She currently works with the Berks Opera Workshop.</p> <p>Stinson’s performance heralds the opening of the Vocal Academy, an intensive, a nine-day program geared toward high school students ages 15 and older interested in pursuing a career in voice. According to 91ֱ�� Conservatory Professor of Singing Daune Mahy, the program’s director, Stinson’s appearance at the Academy carries a two-fold significance: he was once a participant, and his current success gives these young goal-oriented students an idea of where they could end up in the future.</p> <p>A native of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Stinson began his musical studies at age 5 with the violin, and only began to formally study voice at age 17. After earning a degree in vocal performance from 91ֱ�� Conservatory, Stinson pursued further studies at Indiana University. He is now in the process of completing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. </p> <p>Stinson has given concerts across the country with opera companies and as a soloist. Each finalist will perform a complete concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Jahja Ling. In addition to cash prizes, all three finalists will be offered full-tuition scholarships to attend the 91ֱ�� Conservatory of Music.</p> <p>All performances at 91ֱ��—including an Honors Recital on Thursday, July 24—take place in Warner Concert Hall and are free and open to the public. The scope of the appointment supports chamber music studies, which encompasses individual ensemble coaching, master classes, and public performances, including an appearance on 91ֱ��'s venerable <a href="/artsguide/artist-recitals">Artist Recital Series</a>. The quartet's first two stays in 91ֱ�� will take place in September and November 2014.</p> <p>“We are thrilled to begin a relationship with 91ֱ��," says violinist Andrew Bulbrook of the Calder Quartet. "Many of our family members are alumni, and we have always been attracted to the dual strength of a school with the oldest conservatory in the United States embedded in one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the United States. We had the opportunity to work with the thoughtful, curious, and gifted students at 91ֱ�� last May and are thrilled to delve into this work more closely in support of the 91ֱ�� faculty.”</p> <p>"The Calder Quartet are musicians of great skill and versatility, but they are also great advocates for the work of emerging composers and other artists," says Andrea Kalyn, dean of the 91ֱ�� Conservatory. Welsh, the Cleveland Museum of Art’s director of city stages, notes: “Our new concert series in the Transformer Station is devoted to adventurous music, in the same spirit that the exhibitions are devoted to contemporary art. I’m thrilled that the Calder Quartet is investing its time and energy in 91ֱ�� and in the Greater Cleveland community, and I can think of no finer ensemble to have in residence.”</p> <p>The Calder Quartet collaborates with artists across musical genres spanning the classical and contemporary music world, as well as rock, dance, and visual arts, and in venues ranging from art galleries and rock clubs to Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall. The quartet has commissioned more than 25 works to date by some of today’s leading and emerging composers.</p> <p>Individually impressive, the members of the ensemble are violinists Benjamin Jacobson and Andrew Bulbrook, violist Jonathan Moerschel, and cellist Eric Byers. The Calder Quartet formed in 1998 at the University of Southern California. After completing their undergraduate studies, they attended the Colburn School in Los Angeles to study with distinguished American cellist Ron Leonard. From there, they went east to Juilliard, where they were the graduate resident string quartet and earned artist diplomas, followed by studies at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" Berlin with Eberhard Feltz.</p> <p>Noting just one degree of musical separation from 91ֱ��, the Calder Quartet has long-standing relationships with three composers: Terry Riley, Thomas Adès, and Christopher Rouse (91ֱ�� Conservatory, class of 1971). The Calder is the first quartet in two decades to have a work written for it by Rouse. The quartet's album of works by Rouse, called <i>Transfiguration</i>, was released in 2010.</p> <p>This spring, the Calder Quartet is making an all-Adès recording featuring the world-premiere recording of <i>The Four Quarters</i>, a revisitation of the Calder’s debut recording of his landmark work <i>Arcadiana</i>, as well as his piano quintet with the composer at the piano.</p> <p>Upcoming commissions include a work by Peter Eotvos for quartet and singer Barbara Hannigan, a piece for chorus and string quartet by David Lang, and a quartet by Pulitzer Prize-nominee Andrew Norman.</p> <p>Recent industry recognition of the Calder Quartet’s work includes a Grammy nomination for its Harmonia Mundi release of works by Messiaen and Saariaho with pianist Gloria Cheng, and a 2013 Emmy Award for its performance of the Main Title Theme for the Starz TV show <i>Da Vinci’s Demons</i>.</p> <p>The Calder Quartet enjoys great populist appeal and has toured across North America with So Percussion and with rockers the National, Airborne Toxic Event, and Vampire Weekend. For decades, Hinton also thrived as a studio musician, and with nearly 1,200 recording sessions to his name, he has been called the most recorded jazz musician of all time.
