The NEA Big Read in 91ֱ�� is presented in partnership with 91ֱ�� College Libraries, the 91ֱ�� Public Library, the 91ֱ�� Heritage Center, the Friends of the 91ֱ�� Public Library, and other community groups with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.</p> <p>The event will feature Robin Pease, an actress from the Cleveland-based Women in History storytelling organization. Robin will portray the story of Sara Lucy Bagby, an enslaved woman from Virginia who was the last person in the United States forced to return to slavery in the South in 1861 under the Fugitive Slave Act. Bagby escaped via the Underground Railroad and made her way to Cleveland, Ohio, before being captured, arrested, and returned to slavery in Virginia. After Emancipation, Bagby walked to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to leave the South. She ultimately settled in Cleveland, where she died in 1906. She is buried in Woodland Cemetery.</p> <p>"The historical re-enactment of Sara Lucy Bagby's story connects the larger story of the African Diaspora in the United States, specifically Northeast Ohio,” says Alonso Avila, Information Literacy and Student Success Librarian at 91ֱ�� College. “It invites us into an intergenerational experience and conversation at 91ֱ�� which is one of many sites that make up the Underground Railroad."</p> <p><br> An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience. 91ֱ�� is one of 62 communities nationwide participating in the 2022-2023 NEA Big Read. We’re looking for titles that can teach what they know, that reveal to the reader not just a recitation of findings but a narrative of discovery.”</p> <p>Over the next five years, Lever Press is expected to publish some 60 titles—all of which will be available both in print (for a small cost) and online (for no cost). Titles will be available both as downloadable files and as screen-readable web pages. Production will be undertaken by the Michigan Publishing’s emerging <a href="http://fulcrum.org">Fulcrum digital publishing platform</a>, made possible with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. </p> <p>“We are very pleased to be working as a partner in the Lever Press initiative,” says Charles Watkinson, associate university librarian for publishing at the University of Michigan Library and director of University of Michigan Press. “As well as extending the impact of their work through open access online and handsome print editions, we’re excited to work with Lever’s authors to create enriched digital publications that reflect the highest standards of peer review and scholarly merit.”</p> <p>Lever Press is already accepting proposals from scholars for individual works and series of works. Proposals for individual works are welcome from faculty and scholars anywhere.
