It is contrasted by Joan Tower’s <i>Big Sky</i>, inspired by her childhood memories of horseback riding amid the bucolic mountain valleys of Bolivia. Rounding out the recording is Antonin Dvořák’s <i>Dumky</i> trio: a suite-like collection of movements, alternately joyful and melancholic, inspired by traditional Bohemian music.</p> <p>Originally consisting of violinist Stephen Clapp, pianist Joseph Schwartz, and cellist Andor Toth Jr., the 91ֱ�� Trio today features 91ֱ�� faculty members David Bowlin (violin), Haewon Song (piano), and Amir Eldan (cello). It is a profound joy to share them.”</p> <p>The title piece, written in 2013 by Libby Larsen, playfully envisions a bassoon springing to life in a music-filled cityscape late at night. <i>Full moon in the city</i> and another piece that appears here, Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra (1998) by Peter Schickele, both were written for Sakakeeny. In 1998, American soprano <a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/conservatory/faculty/faculty-detail.dot?id=20659">Kendra Colton</a> commissioned Welsh composer Andy Vores to write a collection of songs for her appearance on the Boston Celebrity Series. The success of that premiere, <i>The Reckless Heart</i>, inspired the notion that someday the collection would anchor a recording project.</p> <p>Colton has cultivated a career known for its tremendous versatility over the past 25 years. Now assistant professor of singing at 91ֱ�� Conservatory of Music, Colton is also an 91ֱ�� graduate. Originally trained as a pianist, she didn’t start studying voice until her second year at 91ֱ��. She is adept at a wide range of repertoire, and has developed a niche in oratorio and sacred works from Bach to Brahms, has given acclaimed performances of Handel and Mozart operas, and is recognized for her interpretation of contemporary chamber music and championing of little-known works written in the last century.</p> <p>In 2013, Colton joined forces with longtime collaborator and former 91ֱ�� classmate Kayo Iwama to record the remarkable set of songs by Vores in 91ֱ��’s Clonick Hall and recording studio. Iwama is associate director of the Graduate Vocal Arts Program at the Bard College Conservatory of Music.</p> <p>The five songs of <i>The Reckless Heart</i> are linked, in the words of Vores, by their “sense of a life lived, of experience gained, and of the unstoppable succession of events which make living reckless.”</p> <p>They are brilliantly curated with standout works by three other composers whose creations share Vores’ British Isle roots: Samuel Barber’s <i>Hermit Songs</i>, Ivor Gurney’s <i>Five Elizabethan Songs</i> and “Down by the Salley Gardens,” completed with Benjamin Britten’s “The Salley Gardens” and <i>On This Island</i>.</p> <p>Britten’s centennial birth year in 2013 naturally inclined Colton to record <i>On This Island</i> and therefore helped set the British theme of the CD. Colton exercised sentiment in her choice of Barber’s <i>Hermit Songs</i>—his settings of Medieval Irish texts she has loved since childhood. In this groundbreaking release, Bowlin celebrates two such pieces from each composer, embarking on a journey that reveals how two seemingly identical paths can be marked by endless contrasts.</p> <p>The CD includes Bowlin's performance of <i>Berio’s Sequenza VIII for violin solo</i>, written in 1976 as part of his 14-work series of solo pieces for instruments and voice. The subsequent expanded version, <i>Corale</i> (1981), incorporates the work of 91ֱ��'s Contemporary Music Ensemble. CME also accompanies Bowlin in Huang's Violin Concerto No. 1, "<i>Omnipresence</i>," written in 2004. Sobel, in the hope that it will eradicate bullying and racism in societies everywhere. </p> <p>“Lorenzo Palomo takes a children’s story and brings it alive with music,” says David H. Stull, the former dean of the 91ֱ�� Conservatory, under whose leadership the <i>Sneetches</i> project took flight. “It’s important as a parable for addressing many of the challenges we face today. Under terms of the agreement, Naxos will serve as the exclusive CD distributor of 91ֱ�� Music recordings across the United States and Canada, in addition to digital distribution of all 91ֱ�� Music titles internationally.</p> <p>“Our faculty and students so thoroughly dedicate themselves to creating music worthy of the world’s grandest stages,” says Andrea Kalyn, acting dean of the 91ֱ�� Conservatory. “91ֱ�� Music’s partnership with Naxos allows us to share that stunning artistry with a global audience. The CD features solo performances by conservatory faculty clarinetist Richard Hawkins. Entitled <i>A place toward other places</i>, the recording took place in Clonick Hall, 91ֱ�� Conservatory’s state-of-the-art recording studio, between 2010 and 2012. </p> <p>For this project, Hawkins brings together four American works written during the last quarter of a century by four generations of composers born between 1908 and 1982. Hawkins says, "I am so pleased and honored for my first recording to be released on the 91ֱ�� Music label. This project presents some of the most recent works for clarinet and represents the four corners of clarinet repertoire.”</p> <p>“I'm thrilled,” states Weiss, “to release the disc on the same day that 91ֱ��’s Contemporary Music Ensemble plays alongside our accomplished alumni-founded International Contemporary Ensemble in New York City.”<br> <br> The CD opens with Elliott Carter's Clarinet Concerto, which was written in 1996. This is a timely release as Carter passed away in November 2012 at the age of 103. He was an enormously important American composer recognized with two Pulitzer prizes during his career. <br> <br> Two premiere recordings are also featured on the CD: Benjamin Broening's Clarinet Concerto and Aaron Helgeson's work for solo clarinet, A place toward other places. A 2005 graduate of 91ֱ��, Helgeson’s piece is the inspiration for the CD’s title.<br> <br> The fourth work included on this double CD is William Albright's Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet. <br> <br> Weiss explains the genesis of the CD project: “Richard and I chose the repertory together. We started with the idea of recording Elliot Carter's Clarinet Concerto. In crafting the architecture of the disc as a whole, we liked the idea of each piece involving a successively smaller ensemble. So, the disc moves from concertos with chamber orchestra, through a chamber music ensemble, to a solo clarinet work. We also wanted to put forth some lesser-known composers. The works by Broening and Helgeson were written for Richard and the ensemble.”</p> <p>“The finished product is a stunning collection of vastly different musical styles and personalities,” Weiss adds.</p> <p>Hawkins says he is especially “proud to showcase 91ֱ��'s new recording studio and highlight the professional-level talents of the conservatory students."</p> <p>Weiss adds, "This has been an incredible collaboration with Richard Hawkins.
