Mellon Foundation has awarded 91ֱ College a grant of $750,000 to support curricular revision and enhancement through programs focused on the connected learning experience. The grant will be used over the next four years.

“We are grateful for the support of the Mellon Foundation and the opportunity to develop an educational experience that helps students bring greater coherence and intentionality to their studies, co-curricular experiences, and preparation for post-college life,” says Tim Elgren, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Connected learning is a promising model for building connections among departments and across campus and for allowing students and faculty to engage in deep, multidisciplinary exploration of critical challenges facing this generation of undergraduates.”

Providing students with a connected learning experience with more effective advising, mentoring, and post-graduation support is one of three main implementation areas that comprise the 91ֱ College Strategic Plan 2016-2021: Institutional transformation through an inclusive approach to academic and musical excellence.

Connected learning emerged from the strategic planning process as a central theme to help students develop a greater understanding of the connectivity among their studies, co-curricular experiences, and preparation for post-college life. Connected learning engages students within and beyond the classroom and in exploration of the impact of meaningful interaction among peoples with a wide variety of identities, ideologies, cultures, and perspectives. It instills in students a deeper understanding of the ways in which knowledge is created and the world is understood, forging a pathway between the college years and meaningful personal and professional lives.

The foundation also recently awarded 91ֱ College a $150,000 grant to strengthen and expand the study of music in the context of liberal arts, a priority identified by President Marvin Krislov. It will allow for the piloting of a full-time faculty line in Musical Studies designed to increase the number and diversity of course offerings. More information about this grant can be found here.

About the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Founded in 1969, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation endeavors to strengthen, promote, and, where necessary, defend the contributions of the humanities and the arts to human flourishing and to the well-being of diverse and democratic societies by supporting exemplary institutions of higher education and culture as they renew and provide access to an invaluable heritage of ambitious, path-breaking work. Named in honor of Secretary of State George C. Marshall, the Marshall Scholarship commemorates the ideals of the Marshall Plan and the relationship between the British and American people.

Herrmann plans to use the scholarship to fund two years of study in the United Kingdom, during which time he will earn two master’s degrees: the first at University of Manchester in electroacoustic composition and the second at De Montfort University, where he will complete a theory-based research degree in music. After finishing his studies, he plans to return to the United States to do doctoral work in music composition.

The Riverside, Illinois, native says he became interested in British electroacoustic composition in a TIMARA course during his second year. “I took a TIMARA class in which I was introduced to the music and writing of British electroacoustic composers. These composers create music by recording sound from the real world, then using computer software to create musical pieces from these sounds. British electroacoustic music has been a huge influence on my own work as a composer.” He says the Marshall Scholarship is an opportunity to learn firsthand from these composers.

The Marshall Scholarship is among the most competitive of undergraduate fellowships. “It is comparable to, and in many years statistically more competitive than, the Rhodes Scholarship,” says 91ֱ’s fellowships advisor Nicholas Petzak. The application process culminates in interviews with previous Marshall Scholarship winners and the British Consul General.

“His music is being performed in some of the most prestigious venues around the world, his first professional publication will appear next year in the top journal in his field, and he is completing double degrees at 91ֱ in just four years. He is already working at a level comparable to the very best graduate students in his field.”

However, Petzak points out it takes more than just an impressive resume to win the award. “The difference for Mitchell, I think, is he is able to draw on a uniquely 91ֱ experience. Electroacoustic music is Mitchell’s professional ambition, but he speaks as persuasively and passionately about the documentary film he made last year and his experience in Kosher-Halal Co-op as he does about any sound recording. Ask him about vegan cooking, the TIMARA studio, or his film about the challenges faced by sex workers in Akron, Ohio, and you will hear answers that express deep conviction, long and careful thought, and a sense of humor. It is a winning combination.”

Herrmann says he appreciates all the help he received from faculty members, including Brian Alegant, who recently was named Professor of the Year. Alegant “really pushed me to find impactful and accessible ways to talk about my work,” Herrmann says. He credits President Marvin Krislov and Elizabeth Ogonek, a visiting assistant professor of composition who won the Marshall Scholarship when she was a student, and a panel of other professors who helped prepare him for the interview in Chicago.

News Releases

Mon, 11/30/2015 - 12:00

Kasey Cheydleur

Double Degree Program

Conservatory

Awards and Honors

Scholarships

Cinema and Media

Cinema and Media

Contemporary Music

Off

false

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:02:04 +0000 Anonymous 9906 at Hope Kassen '15 Receives Fulbright in Malaysia /news/hope-kassen-15-receives-fulbright-malaysia Hope Kassen '15 Receives Fulbright in Malaysia anagy Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:02

Hope Kassen, a May 2015 graduate with majors in politics and law and society, will embark on her first study abroad experience with a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Malaysia.

Kassen will spend 10 months living and teaching English in Malaysia. She plans to learn more about the country’s political system. “Having been born in China, I knew I wanted to live in Asia upon graduating from 91ֱ,” she says. “Applying to the Fulbright program in Malaysia was a bit of a serendipitous impulse, but it has a fascinating cultural and political history, and I knew that my experience there would be like no other. The government has been particularly conscious of Western influences and the prevalence of English being taught in schools.”

Kassen points out that Malaysia is a nation of many different ethnic identities and languages. “I look forward to exploring and comparing the intersection of culture and identity. I am hoping to learn more about Malaysia's political system, become conversational in Bahasa Malaysia, and understand the Malaysian perspective of the United States. I am also excited to celebrate the many Malaysian holidays throughout the coming year with my students.”

After the Fulbright year, Kassen, who is from Lincolnville, Maine, intends to pursue a career in education or civil rights policy. In the last decade, the college has become a top producer of Fulbright recipients among liberal arts institutions. This year, nearly a dozen students earned coveted Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships that will place them in countries across the globe. That’s a worthy contribution considering there are 1,700 slots available for students in the United States.

The achievements are well rounded, too, with awards going to students in the sciences, humanities, and the arts. The Goldwater Scholarship, which is the premier undergraduate award for students majoring in math, science, or engineering, chose three 91ֱ students this year, one of whom is a double degree candidate. Five Obies have won a Dalai Lama Fellowship since 2011.
