The hour-long piece, based on Book IV of Virgil’s ancient epic poem <i>Aeneid</i>, has evolved into one of the most iconic operas in British history.</p> <p><i>Dido and Aeneas</i> will be performed at 91ֱ��’s Fairchild Chapel (inside Bosworth Hall, 50 W. Lorain St.) at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16. A 3 p.m. matinee will take place Sunday, April 17, at Cleveland's Harkness Chapel (11200 Bellflower Rd.) on the Case campus. Admission to all performances is free.</p> <p>Written in 1680, the opera recounts the love story between Queen Dido of Carthage and the Trojan warrior Aeneas, who abandons his lover when witches intervene. The production is made possible by Jason Goldberg, a fifth-year student at 91ֱ�� who has produced and directed the opera as his final project toward a rare independent major in opera directing.</p> <p>"The more I researched the work, the more I wanted to do a historically informed version of this masterpiece because the story’s themes of love lost, honorable intentions, social pressures, and base desires are all very relevant today,” says Goldberg, who also majors in voice performance. “Incorporating Baroque gesture and stylized movement into the production allows the opera to live in its natural setting and highlights its drama and themes."</p> <p>The production features a cast of 91ֱ�� vocal performance majors as well as dancers from Case Western Reserve University's Baroque Dance Ensemble in numbers choreographed by Case instructor Julie Andrijeski. The impetus for the concert comes from 91ֱ�� Professor of Recorder and Baroque Flute Michael Lynn, who received a liver in a transplant operation at the Cleveland Clinic last fall. In appreciation of the clinic’s work, he has organized this benefit concert, which will take place in the Gartner Auditorium at the Cleveland Museum of Art.</p> <p>Joining Lynn will be fellow conservatory faculty member Kathie Stewart (baroque flute), as well as current 91ֱ�� student Kate Shuldiner ‘13 (viola da gamba), alumna Jeannette Sorrell ’90 (harpsichord), and several members of Apollo’s Fire, the orchestra that Sorrell founded. Lynn’s daughter Sarah, a soprano who will be entering the 91ֱ�� Conservatory this fall, will sing.</p> <p>The concert program includes works by Telemann, Handel, Marais, and others. One particularly appropriate piece was published in Marin Marais’s fifth book of pieces for the viola da gamba in 1725. Entitled <i>Le tableau de l’opération de la taille</i> (“A Description of the Removal of a Stone”), colloquially known as the <i>Bladder-Stone Operation</i>, it is one of the earliest examples of program music, or a piece that conveys a story. The piece includes detailed annotations of the procedure as represented by the music—terrifying and vivid descriptions of the actual surgery Marais himself underwent.</p> <p>Lynn, in addition to his position at 91ֱ�� Conservatory, performs regularly with Apollo’s Fire as well as the 91ֱ�� Baroque Ensemble and the Irish band Turn the Corner.
