The politics major from Sandy Spring, Maryland, was so moved by the experience that she took the next semester off to continue working for the campaign. While his bid was eventually unsuccessful, Brand was hooked. She knew politics was where she wanted to be.</p> <p>After graduation, that desire led her to <a href="http://www.gmmb.com/">GMMB</a>, a Washington D.C.-based communications consulting firm which consults with campaigns as well as issue advocacy work. Brand says she applied for GMMB because one of the founders is an 91ֱ alum, Jim Margolis ’79, and because the company shared her values and is known for high quality work. Currently, she works in the media department at GMMB tracking competitive information about political spending on ads. The information she receives helps paint a picture of what is going on before ads actually run and helps the GMMB media buyers make decisions about where they want to place their own ads.</p> <p>While at 91ֱ, Brand participated in College Democrats, Student Senate, Women’s Chorale, and was a member of Harkness and Pyle Co-ops. She says her time at 91ֱ taught her about how to connect with different people and ideas. “The way people care so deeply about things at 91ֱ was a huge part of my education,” she says.</p> <p>In the future, Brand says she would like to continue working in politics and take a more active role in shaping the message and policy goals of the campaigns and political leaders she works with.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Releases</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2016-05-18T12:00:00Z">Wed, 05/18/2016 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Kasey Cheydleur</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2360">After 91ֱ</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2368">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2389">Young Alumni</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25416">Politics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/politics" hreflang="und">Politics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Molly Brand (back row, third from the left) with the other 2015 GMMB summer interns.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Molly Brand</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/gmmb_2015_summer_interns_1_0.jpg?itok=FHpkZ-JI" width="760" height="570" alt="GMMB summer interns"> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:01:35 +0000 Anonymous 9356 at Hope Kassen '15 Receives Fulbright in Malaysia /news/hope-kassen-15-receives-fulbright-malaysia <span>Hope Kassen '15 Receives Fulbright in Malaysia</span> <span><span>anagy</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:02:25-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:02">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:02</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Hope Kassen, a May 2015 graduate with majors in politics and law and society, will embark on her first study abroad experience with a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Malaysia.</p> <p>Kassen will spend 10 months living and teaching English in Malaysia. She plans to learn more about the country’s political system. “Having been born in China, I knew I wanted to live in Asia upon graduating from 91ֱ,” she says. “Applying to the Fulbright program in Malaysia was a bit of a serendipitous impulse, but it has a fascinating cultural and political history, and I knew that my experience there would be like no other. The government has been particularly conscious of Western influences and the prevalence of English being taught in schools.” </p> <p>Kassen points out that Malaysia is a nation of many different ethnic identities and languages. “I look forward to exploring and comparing the intersection of culture and identity. I am hoping to learn more about Malaysia's political system, become conversational in Bahasa Malaysia, and understand the Malaysian perspective of the United States. I am also excited to celebrate the many Malaysian holidays throughout the coming year with my students.”</p> <p>After the Fulbright year, Kassen, who is from Lincolnville, Maine, intends to pursue a career in education or civil rights policy. She also wants to continue her education in law and public policy. </p> <p>“Above all, I am hoping that my experience in Malaysia will make me more aware of the many different ways to live life. And that whatever I end up doing, I will do it with enthusiasm, empathy, and an open mind.”<br></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Releases</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2015-08-04T12:00:00Z">Tue, 08/04/2015 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Amanda Nagy</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2363">Academics &amp; Research</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25416">Politics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25396">Law and Society</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/politics" hreflang="und">Politics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/law-and-society" hreflang="und">Law and Society</a></div> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:02:25 +0000 anagy 10156 at Poll: Ohio Voters Disengaged, Ignorant of Kasich Even After Landslide Election /news/poll-ohio-voters-disengaged-ignorant-kasich-even-after-landslide-election <span>Poll: Ohio Voters Disengaged, Ignorant of Kasich Even After Landslide Election</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2016-11-07T13:03:18-05:00" title="Monday, November 7, 2016 - 13:03">Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:03</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>OBERLIN, OHIO — After four years in office and a landslide victory, 36% of registered Ohio voters could not identify Governor John Kasich by name. A recent poll conducted by 91ֱ College’s Initiative in Electoral Politics shows that not only were Ohio’s registered Democrats (44%) and independents (40%) unable to identify the governor, one in four registered Republicans drew a blank as well. Young voters (18-34) are especially unaware of John Kasich, with 55% unable to identify the Governor. </p> <p>This disengagement from state politics coincides with a sense that the country is on the wrong track (61%) and that both parties are responsible for the gridlock in Washington (53%). These numbers are particularly pronounced among young people (18-34), with 70% claiming the country is headed in the wrong direction, and 64% blaming both parties for gridlock. “There seems to be a definite sense of malaise among Ohio voters,” said Michael Parkin, associate professor of politics. “People seem to have withdrawn a little, perhaps due to frustration or general lack of interest.” </p> <p>Looking forward to the 2016 elections, Ohio voters are generally undecided with 39% of registered voters saying they did not know yet whether they would support a Republican or Democratic candidate. Those who said they would likely back a Republican were mixed, with no candidate receiving more than 15% support. On the Democratic side, 56% favor Hillary Clinton, 12% favor Joe Biden and the rest of the field trails with single-digit support.</p> <p>Between November 5 and 10, 500 registered Ohio voters were polled. Professional interviewers conducted the surveys using landlines and cell phones. Quotas were established to ensure an equal distribution of respondents in terms of gender and party identification. It has a margin of error of 4.4% at the 95% level.</p> <p>Contact: Michael Parkin, Associate Professor of Politics Michael.Parkin@oberlin.edu (440) 775-6197</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Releases</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2014-12-02T12:00:00Z">Tue, 12/02/2014 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25416">Politics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/politics" hreflang="und">Politics</a></div> </div> Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:03:18 +0000 Anonymous 10781 at
