Throughout the festivities which will be observed through October 13, there will be a series of events ranging from workshops and panels to performances that celebrate and explore Latinidad and the achievements of the Latinx community.

The LHM programming was largely coordinated by the LHM committee, a group of Latinx identifying students who volunteered their time, including their summers, to organize events and contact speakers, along with Julio Reyes, the Latinx community coordinator at the Multicultural Resource Center. This year the organizers of the month have changed the name, previously Latino/a or Latin@ Heritage Month, due to the gendered structure of the Spanish language, to Latinx (pronounced Latinexx) to better represent every member of the Latinx community such as genderqueer, non-binary identifying people.

With the help of faculty, staff, and 91直播 community members, the committee has arranged for speakers such as writer and finalist for Latino Literacy Now's International Latino Book Awards, Alejandra Campos; author Carol Hess, and organizers Isabel Valenzuela and Tony Nelson to come to 91直播. There will be performances, and some workshops, from La Yegros, a singer/songwriter active in the underground music scene of Buenos Aires, Argentina; comedians Gwen La Roka, Aida Rodriguez, and Elizardi Castro; Argentine music and dance ensemble Tami Tango Trio; performance artist and author Maria Aponte; and composer Raphael Jim茅nez. The LHM committee has also organized faculty and student panels and a Dia de la Raza Banquet, featuring award-winning poet, actor, speaker and author Carlos Andr茅s G贸mez, which challenges Columbus Day by celebrating Indigeneity, mixed identities, and survival that is a part of Latinx identity.

The organizers planned the month鈥檚 events around issues that they collectively decided to highlight. According to senior Ana Robelo, a LHM committee member, one of the most important aspects of the month is the opportunity for members of the Latinx community at 91直播 to speak about their experiences. It is also important for Latinx-identifying and non-identifying students alike to learn about Latinx history. 鈥淗aving a platform for many students to share their stories and build a strong community is important,鈥 said Robelo. 鈥淪tudents who are part of the community find it to be really affirming.鈥

LHM is sponsored by La Alianza Latinx, Ohio Hispanic Heritage Coalition, The 91直播 College Office of Community & Government Relations, The Cat In The Cream, La Casa Hisp谩nica, 91直播 Young Educators, the Multicultural Resource Center, the Lamda Union, and the departments of Latin American studies, gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, and comparative American studies.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend. 鈥淪ee it more as a conversation with us,鈥 advises Robelo.

News Releases

Mon, 09/22/2014 - 12:00

Rosalind Black

Latin American Studies

Latin American Studies

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:03:39 +0000 Anonymous 10946 at 91直播 Celebrates Latino/a Heritage Month /news/oberlin-celebrates-latinoa-heritage-month 91直播 Celebrates Latino/a Heritage Month Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:04

On Saturday, September 14, 91直播 students celebrated the beginning of Latino/a Heritage Month (LHM) with a celebration of several Latin American countries' independence, at La Casa Hisp谩nica (Spanish House). Latino/a Heritage Month, which runs through October 15, celebrates the culture, achievements, and heritage of Latinos and Latinas.

The LHM programming was put together by a panel of Latino/a students, the LHM committee, who volunteered their time. The month鈥檚 events include such speakers as incarceration expert Bob Libal and New York University Professor Arlene Davila, who will speak Thursday, September 19, on what academics can learn from Arizona鈥檚 efforts to keep Mexican-American history out of the classroom. In addition to the LHM Committee, LHM events are sponsored by La Alianza Latina, the Multicultural Resource Center, and La Casa Hisp谩nica, as well as the Dean of Students鈥 Office, and the Office of the President.

Jesus Gomez, Latin o/a Community Coordinator at 91直播鈥檚 Multicultural Resource Center, organized the LHM panel and navigated the logistics of bringing speakers. He says that this year鈥檚 speakers were selected based on their relevancy to what 91直播鈥檚 Latin o/a community is discussing and studying. 鈥淢y role is to get what the students want,鈥 Gomez says.

The purpose of this year鈥檚 LHM is to celebrate Latinidad as it exists today, says Victoria Velasco, a junior and member of the LHM committee. Translated literally, Latinidad refers to Latin languages, specifically Spanish. The term has come to encompass the social, cultural, and political importance of diasporic Latino/a communities whose countries of origin are the Spanish-speaking countries of Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.

91直播鈥檚 2013 LHM celebrates Latinidad as a 鈥渜uintessentially diverse, transnational, and changing phenomenon in the Americas and the rest of the world,鈥 says Gomez.

Velasco concurs. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 want it to be a cultural heritage month in which we celebrate what our culture used to be, but rather, how it鈥檚 transforming,鈥 she says.

Though the events focus on Latino/a communities, Gomez encourages individuals from all different backgrounds to attend. "They're events for everyone," he says.

In keeping with the celebration鈥檚 contemporary focus, the month will conclude with a banquet that will feature presentation of students鈥 scholarship on Latina/o communities.

News Releases

Wed, 09/18/2013 - 12:00

James Helmsworth

Cultural Celebrations

Resources for Students

Latin American Studies

Latin American Studies

Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:04:39 +0000 Anonymous 11856 at
