Even for those who aren’t business majors, the organization provides countless opportunities to all Obies joining the workforce.

“It completely changed my approach to applying and interviewing,” he says. “I realize now utilizing the alumni from 91ֱ is a path that has the highest success. I’ve met a ton of alumni now and they have all been incredibly supportive, some even telling all of us in Ashby, ‘Talk to me, get a line of communication going, we’ll refer you into the company and get you a better shot.’”

When Jesse begins working at Synchrony–a consumer financial services company–after he graduates in May, he’ll take this networking knowledge with him into the business world. As a math and computer science double major, he’s also excited to apply his 91ֱ coursework to his new position.

“Majoring in math was an expansion of not only analytical thinking but also just a new perspective on how to view the world, which I thought was very awesome,” he says. “I think the class that changed a lot of my perspective on things in general was called Linear Optimization, and it was taught by Bob Bosch.”

Jesse explains that this course taught him how to apply logic, organization, and problem-solving skills to a wide variety of situations, both academic and professional:

“There is a lot of room for me to explore that in my new job. In my internship last semester, Synchrony did these things called IP sprints where we were able to work on our own skills and interests, and so during that sprint I actually worked on optimizing something related to my work and they gave me opportunities to explore that more.”

He also emphasizes that this skillset is transferable and an “important tool regardless of field,” encouraging his fellow Obies to explore all their interests to give their careers flexibility.

In addition to Ashby and an invigorating curriculum, Jesse credits the accomplished faculty for creating a valuable and enriching experience at 91ֱ.

“My professors have made a significant impact on my education, especially coming from my high school where I felt like a little fish in a big pond,” he says. “I had a phenomenal experience with having such a strong line of communication with my 91ֱ professors, and any time I struggled or was confused about something, there was always an outlet for me to go talk to them.”

Jesse looks forward to continuing the skill development he began during his software engineering internship at Synchrony. He returns to the company as a full-time employee this July, and is excited to use software development and mathematical modeling to create innovative solutions that transcend industries.

If you’re excited about everything the future has in store, check out Career Exploration and Development to learn how 91ֱ can help you turn your passions into a fulfilling career.

News Story

Tue, 02/11/2025 - 12:00

Danielle Frezza

Fourth-year Jesse Cruz reflects on all the ways 91ֱ College has helped him as a student and young professional: “The most valuable thing you’re getting from this education is learning how to work hard and think very openly.”

Ashby Business Scholars

Mathematics

Computer Science

Career Exploration & Development

Early Careers

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones ’97

Mon, 10 Feb 2025 15:10:32 +0000 mreed 484651 at From 91ֱ College to Goldman Sachs, financial economics major supports communities across the world /news/oberlin-college-goldman-sachs-financial-economics-major-supports-communities-across-world From 91ֱ College to Goldman Sachs, financial economics major supports communities across the world mreed Tue, 10/08/2024 - 15:24

"Watching my dad help small businesses by issuing loans that fueled their growth was inspiring. It showed me firsthand how financial resources could uplift communities," Mayanka recalls. This early exposure sparked his dream of working in investment banking, where he could help large corporations navigate complex transactions and provide strategic advice to create value not only for the firm but also for the broader economy.

Mayanka’s journey at 91ֱ College solidified his path toward this goal. As a member of the 91ֱ Finance Club, he progressed through various leadership roles, honing his business analysis, financial modeling, and investment research skills. "The Finance Club was where I really started to build my foundation. Leading investment pitches and conducting market analysis helped me realize how much I enjoyed the work," he says. These experiences, coupled with classes like Principles of Finance with M. Udara Peiris and Money and Banking with John Duca, laid the groundwork for his deeper exploration into finance.

Mayanka’s winter term in Nepal spent working in private equity deepened his understanding of the industry, as did his internships at EY-Parthenon and Dolma Impact Fund. At EY-Parthenon, he contributed to a live sell-side deal, gaining hands-on experience in strategy and transaction advisory. At Dolma Impact Fund, he focused on impact investing through private equity, sharpening his analytical skills and enhancing his understanding of how private equity firms drive value through sustainable investments.

"Both experiences showed me the potential of private equity to create meaningful change, especially when it’s tied to ESG [Environmental, Social, and Governance] goals," Mayanka explains. 91ֱ’s unique opportunities also played a critical role in his educational development. As an Ashby Business Scholar, he engaged with alumni and gained invaluable insights into the world of business and finance. His private reading in financial modeling with Professor Peiris and his study abroad at Oxford – where he participated in and won a Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) competition – further built his confidence and technical expertise.

"Winning that M&A competition at Oxford was a turning point. It gave me the confidence that I could thrive in this field," he reflects. 91ֱ’s resources, including access to the Bloomberg Terminal and The Wall Street Journal, allowed him to follow the markets closely, refine his investment theses, and complete the Bloomberg Market Concepts certification.

Mayanka’s summer internship at Bank of America in Debt Capital Markets gave him hands-on exposure to macroeconomic drivers like inflation and interest rates, reinforcing the connection between his economics coursework and practical finance.

"That internship was where everything I had learned came together,” he says. “Understanding the economy’s key drivers and seeing them play out in real-time in the markets was invaluable.” Through all these experiences, 91ֱ helped him bridge the gap between theory and practice, offering the platform and resources to turn his dream into reality.

As a member of the first cohort of 91ֱ’s new financial economics major, Mayanka is grateful for the path he carved for himself. He credits 91ֱ’s blend of economics and finance with providing him the foundation necessary for his future career. "91ֱ gave me the freedom to find my way in finance, and now, with the new financial economics major, I’m excited for future students to have a more structured path."

Starting as an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs, Mayanka sees his 91ֱ journey as a testament to how ambition, determination, and the right support can achieve even the biggest dreams.

Ready to make an impact with your education and career? Before coming to 91ֱ, I knew that I wanted a career in finance, so that helped with my decision. Establishing connections with individuals who have experienced similar environments can be incredibly fulfilling. Through my interactions with 91ֱ alums, I gained advice on career goals and recommendations on specific classes that could enhance my academic journey at 91ֱ. This has helped me immensely because it opens doors to more opportunities and broader networking possibilities. Ultimately, there is always a connection to be made with someone with insights into the industry you’re interested in pursuing.

What’s been the most surprising or unexpected thing about the program?
The diversity of the financial institutions we visited. The program also exposed me to various other areas within finance that captured my interest. Additionally, I’ve taken courses outside of my major to enhance my skills and focus on developing a well-rounded understanding.

What’s the best advice you’ve received so far in the program?
Network and try new things. The class emphasizes hands-on learning through case studies, informational interviews, and group work, all of which simulate real-world experiences that we will be exposed to in the workplace.

What’s been the most surprising or unexpected thing about the program?
How intimate and hands-on it is. With only 13 people in the program, it fosters a tight-knit community. Although this surprised me, it is also one of my favorite aspects of the program.

As of now, what are your post-graduation plans?
I am planning on working in New York City, hopefully in a mathematics-orientated, finance-related field. They have made a significant impact on my growth and development by sharing their insights and experiences in the finance industry. I have learned a lot from talking to alumni who have taught me about financial modeling, consulting, and data analysis. To be able to talk with so many alumni in the finance industry who also went to 91ֱ illustrates how small of a world we live in.

What’s been the most surprising or unexpected thing about the program?
The faculty and alumni are generous, supportive, and intellectually passionate. They have provided me with invaluable resources and opportunities, such as access to online databases, mock interviews, and internships. They have also shown their generosity, support, and passion by giving me feedback, advice, and encouragement on my projects, assignments, and career goals. I've gained more confidence in the knowledge, skills, and abilities that I acquired through my classes at 91ֱ. I have learned how to apply what I have learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios and challenges in the finance industry. The program has also exposed me to various aspects and opportunities in finance and helped me identify my strengths and interests. I am eager to pursue a career in finance and use my education and experience to make a positive impact.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received so far in the program?
Be intellectually curious and open-minded. The world of finance is vast and ever evolving, and my curiosity will keep me ahead. I always ask questions and seek to understand how things work. With this advice, I have learned how to use different financial databases, how to analyze various types of risks, and how to communicate effectively with my fellow scholars. These aspects have motivated and led me and my peers in the program to achieve success in the future.

Michael Dinkel ’26
Major: Economics
Hometown: Silver Spring, Md.
Other campus activities: Varsity lacrosse, 91ֱ Finance & Investment Club, bowling league

Why did you decide to apply to be an Ashby Business Scholar?
I first heard about the Ashby Business Scholars program at a career center information session about pursuing a career in finance at 91ֱ. After the session, I talked with one of my lacrosse teammates who had participated in the program and learned how helpful it was for him. Once I knew I wanted to pursue a career in finance at the start of my second semester in my first year, I decided to apply because being able to meet with alumni and make connections within the field I wanted to go into was one of the best opportunities I could gain from 91ֱ.

Now that you’re involved in the program, what specific aspect has been most helpful to you – and why?
Getting the chance to travel and meet alumni during Winter Term this year will be the most helpful. We’ll be getting an inside look at the pulse of 91ֱ by exploring research, performances, and everything in between.”

Erin: “We’ll take an inside look into the Ashby Business Scholars Program at 91ֱ, which provides students with the tools and support they need to secure professional experiences in business fields. We’ll talk with student participants in the program during their on-campus winter term intensive on business professionalism and networking before they set out to meet alumni companies and friends of the college in Cleveland, New York City, and San Francisco.”

[Background noises, students talking in group discussion]

Erin: “Just down the hall from the Career Development Center, Patrick Keebler, who served as one of the Business Scholars program coaches from the Career Development Center this winter term, leads students in group discussion.”

Unidentified student: “You have the ability like 10 minutes before a presentation to change something or if something comes up you can change to meet that specific thing.”

Unidentified student: “I think what I can bring to the group is, if the group is too focused on the objective and not just cutting off those who are not contributing more...not catching up to speed, I can assist...be like...oh, maybe so-and-so has some input that would be valuable, so that will be useful for the group.”

Patrick: “That’s a really good point, Spencer, because what happens in groups—and you are already picking up on this—is that you can start to serve as translators for each other, you can sort of like, oh I understand where he’s coming from, this is what he is trying to say or this is what she’s trying to get across, so that’s part of what happens with these dynamics.”

Patrick: “So, this is kind of their professional development week, this is building up to when they travel over the next two weeks. Today was all about understanding their personality type as it relates to their participation on the team, and so they are understanding better about how they contribute to the team, what some of their blind spots might be as it relates to their participation on the team, and they are also learning about the team as a collective whole—what the team’s personality type is, kind of how they work together, what the team kind of has as far strengths moving forward, and what are some of the things I think they need to be aware...of as far as limitations are concerned.”

Unidentified student: “Interesting that you guys focused on introversion vs extroversion, because we didn’t really discuss that as much. We discussed how judging versus...no...it might have been perceiving versus judging...but it was more like sensing....it was how we take criticism and how we communicate with each other. And I think because there’s a lot of people who think in the general group here...we feel like, oh, because we don’t take criticism personally, everyone’s just like that, and we can be harsh and not really be empathetic towards our teammates. But it is equally as important to care about the feeling part, so that is something that everyone needs to keep in mind when communicating with each other, giving feedback, giving criticism. Because the world runs on people and people run on feelings, instead of just complete...”

Rut: “So my name is Rut Merida. I am a third-year Posse Scholar majoring in economics and minoring in comparative American studies. I joined the Business Scholars because I’ve always had this interest in working with numbers and to get more exposure within that. I have a broad interest in finance, which I’m hoping to learn more about through this program, since we do visit so many different people and learn about the jobs that they do. So, I thought it was a very interesting program to learn more about the things that I may be interested in doing.”

Erin: “Sylvia Rios is the assistant director of career readiness and professional development in the Career Center.”

Sylvia: “So, I’ve been really lucky in getting to work with some awesome students and I’ve seen a lot of transformations take place when it comes to maybe public speaking or just really being able to get it, where they feel almost surprised that they get accepted into the program and the program....throughout whether it’s just working on a team with their peers or getting that interaction with alumni and friends of the college, they get this increased confidence in their abilities and in their awareness of these different opportunities that are available to them. Every year, students from 91ֱ go to big companies like Google and Facebook and larger finance firms and banks like Morgan Stanley, and so being able to see alumni within these roles, and see how they’ve combined their personal interests in social justice, in music maybe, in a lot of different arenas—politics—and how they were able to stay authentic and be themselves in these roles—in finance or in tech industries—is really important. I think...being able to see yourself in these roles, to see people that are very much like you.”

Erin: “Miles Zhang is a sophomore in the Business Scholars program double majoring in economics and environmental studies.”

Miles: “I think that coming to a place like 91ֱ, you’re naturally going to be a person who has their own interests and passions and loves exploring them and pursuing them. I think winter term is basically the perfect opportunity to do that, you know. It’s a monthlong period where you have access to a ton of different resources and you can use it however you want to, pretty much. I think at any liberal arts school, people can think that there is sometimes a de-emphasis on preprofessionalism and I think that this is also a great opportunity for that, because it gives you another time...You can intern places or, you know, do a program like this that teaches you these skills that are going to be very useful in life. So, basically any way that you kind of see your life going after college, winter term is a way to kind of explore that and pursue that and try new things...It’s just one of the best parts of 91ֱ for me personally. Last winter term, I worked at this environmental advocacy group and I got to see what it is actually like working at a place like that and what I might be doing in the future. And that’s something that I wouldn’t normally have any opportunity to do at another place.”

Erin: “To learn more about what takes place at 91ֱ, visit www.oberlin.edu/news.
