W. Cowles Director of the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM) at 91ֱ College, recognized as one of the best academic art museums in the nation. 91ֱ is pleased to name Katherine Solender as interim director during the search for a new leader. Derstine will begin her role as deputy director and chief curator of the Cleveland Museum of Art in December.&nbsp;</p> <h2>A Legacy of Achievement</h2> <p>Derstine, who has been the Allen’s director since 2012, having joined the museum as a curator in 2006, leaves behind an impressive legacy of growth, collaboration, and institutional advancement, marked by key accomplishments in expanding the museum’s endowments, collection, and facilities. Throughout her tenure, Derstine led significant initiatives to secure the museum's future. Working with colleagues, she played an instrumental role in raising and securing endowments to support curatorial positions, art acquisitions, and museum programming.&nbsp;</p> <p>Derstine also worked to preserve the museum’s historic buildings and infrastructure. Notably, she oversaw the conservation of Frederick Wiley’s ceiling and clerestory paintings in the King Sculpture Court, partnered to secure a new roof for the museum’s flagship Cass Gilbert building, supported efforts to maintain the Weltzheimer-Johnson Frank Lloyd Wright House, programming at which the museum oversees, and laid the groundwork for a future museum expansion.</p> <p>Building the museum's collection was another highlight of Derstine’s directorship. Under her leadership, the AMAM made significant acquisitions, particularly of works by women and artists from diverse backgrounds. In addition, she championed numerous exhibitions and public programs featuring acclaimed artists such as Dawoud Bey, Audrey Flack, Mary Miss, Pat Steir, and Fred Wilson.</p> <p>“I am proud of completing a new strategic plan for the Allen, overseeing the museum's reaccreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, and finding ways to connect 91ֱ students with the public through our work,” says Derstine. “The Allen has an unparalleled collection for an academic museum of its size, encompassing works that span six millennia and representing cultures from around the world. It has been an honor to lead such an extraordinary institution."</p> <p>David Kamitsuka, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at 91ֱ College, praised Derstine’s leadership: “Andria’s tenure has transformed the museum in countless ways. Her success in securing financial resources, her stewardship of our collection and historic buildings, and her commitment to enhancing the museum’s role in public and academic life have cemented her legacy. Under her direction, the Allen has become a national model for how a college art museum can serve students, faculty, and the broader community.”</p> <h2>Welcoming Katherine Solender as Interim Director</h2> <p>91ֱ alum Katherine Solender is the ideal leader to take the reins of the AMAM as the museum searches for a permanent successor. Solender is a highly respected museum professional with more than 40 years of experience, including prior service as interim director of the AMAM in 2003-2004 and again in 2011-2012.</p> <p>“We are thrilled to have Katie return to lead the Allen during this transition,” says Kamitsuka. “Her extensive experience, both with the Allen and the Cleveland Museum of Art, and her expertise in museum operations make her the ideal person to ensure the museum's continued success.”</p> <p>Solender expressed her enthusiasm about stepping into her new role: “I’m looking forward to serving 91ֱ once again as interim director of its extraordinary museum. Every time I enter the Allen, I’m impressed by how its collections and programs bring the world to 91ֱ and engage students and faculty. My primary goal will be to ensure stability and continuity for our staff and community partners as we prepare for the museum’s next chapter."</p> <p>Solender has long been a consultant for the AMAM, working on various projects since 2006, and served as acting director during Andria Derstine’s sabbatical in 2018-2019. Her distinguished career includes leadership roles at the Cleveland Museum of Art and other institutions, where she oversaw exhibitions and major projects.</p> <p>“I believe academic museums like the Allen can be effective forums for experimentation and discussion, providing access to diverse ideas and encouraging visitors to think critically about complex issues,” added Solender. “I’m honored to help continue this mission as we search for a new director.”</p> <h2>About the Allen Memorial Art Museum</h2> <p>Founded in 1917, the Allen Memorial Art Museum at 91ֱ College is one of the finest academic art museums in the United States. Its collection includes more than 16,000 works spanning 6,000 years and representing a broad range of cultures. Free and open to the public, the museum serves as a vital resource for 91ֱ students, faculty, and the wider community, promoting public education, interdisciplinary learning, and cultural engagement.</p> <p>For more information, please visit <a class="go" href="http://amam.oberlin.edu">amam.oberlin.edu</a></p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Katherine Solender Named Interim Director</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2024-10-14T12:00:00Z">Mon, 10/14/2024 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2378">Allen Memorial Art Museum</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2377">Arts &amp; Humanities</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2597">Faculty and Staff</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Yvonne Gay</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/images-2024/rs138248_cs9a8554.jpg?itok=UHa1hpxB" width="760" height="570" alt="Front door and steps of Allen Memorial Art Museum"> </div> Mon, 14 Oct 2024 15:47:08 +0000 elutes 478915 at Bruce Jamison Named Director of Campus Safety at 91ֱ /news/bruce-jamison-named-director-campus-safety-oberlin <span>Bruce Jamison Named Director of Campus Safety at 91ֱ</span> <span><span>eburnett</span></span> <span><time datetime="2024-09-18T10:31:18-04:00" title="Wednesday, September 18, 2024 - 10:31">Wed, 09/18/2024 - 10:31</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Bruce Jamison, a career-long public servant with 38 years of experience in municipal law enforcement and higher education safety settings, has been named Director of Campus Safety at 91ֱ. It’s a path he first encountered in an African art history course as an undergrad at the University of Illinois.</p> <p>“I realized African art history was asking all these formative questions—about race, gender, colonialism, diaspora, and personhood—that I felt weren’t just important to the discipline; they were important to understanding the&nbsp;<em>world</em>,” he says.</p> <p>Chair of 91ֱ’s <a href="/node/318461">Art History Department</a> and an associate professor of African and Black Atlantic art history, Rarey is deeply focused on curating African and Black Atlantic art histories. He co-curated the Allen Memorial Art Museum’s 2019-20&nbsp;exhibition&nbsp;<em>Afterlives of the Black Atlantic</em>, which won an Award of Excellence from the Association of Art Museum Curators.</p> <p>Now Rarey’s work is in the spotlight again: This year, he won the College Art Association’s prestigious Charles Rufus Morey Book Award for his first book,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dukeupress.edu/insignificant-things"><em>Insignificant Things: Amulets and the Art of Survival in the Early Black Atlantic</em></a>&nbsp;(Duke University Press, 2023).&nbsp;It&nbsp;traces the history of the African-associated amulets&nbsp;made and&nbsp;carried as tools of survival&nbsp;by enslaved&nbsp;people&nbsp;from the 17th to the 19th centuries.</p> <p>We asked Rarey to share&nbsp;three things about how he uses art history to&nbsp;tell new stories about the&nbsp;African diaspora. Here’s what he had to say.</p> <p><strong>1) “Western” art history is deeply entangled with Black Atlantic art history.</strong></p> <p>African art and artists have always been instrumental to the development of visual culture of the so-called “West.” One great example I often teach with is at 91ֱ’s Allen Memorial Art Museum: an ivory saltcellar carved around 1500 by a Sapi artist who worked in what is now Sierra Leone. It was commissioned by Portuguese traders active on the West African coast, and its design demonstrates the artist’s strategic negotiation of Sapi and Portuguese aesthetics. The traders—some of whom eventually initiated into Sapi society—later took the saltcellar to Lisbon and displayed it as a prestige object. Keep in mind that by 1550 Lisbon also had a large, diverse Black population who forged lives at all levels of Portuguese society. Categories like “African” and “European” don’t seem helpful to me in describing the saltcellar and the worlds it moved through. Rather, I’m interested in exploring how Black art and artists routinely challenge or upend efforts to categorize them by revealing the longstanding circulations of African and European visual culture in the wider Atlantic world.</p> <p><strong>2) Black Atlantic art history demands creative, ethical approaches.</strong></p> <p>Consider the amulets discussed in my book, which I think are critical to understanding Black Atlantic art history. Often made by Africans enslaved in Brazil, these small pouches had the power to protect their users from violence. Perhaps hundreds of thousands of these amulets existed in the 1700s. Today only two known examples survive—and only because they were confiscated as part of the Portuguese Inquisition by officials who declared the amulets evil and sacrilegious. How can we look to these objects to understand the lives of their makers while also reckoning with the violent histories that made them available as objects of study? To me, these questions are what makes Black Atlantic art history exciting and important: It demands we come up with innovative ways to tell ethical stories from small, fragmentary sources.</p> <p><strong>3) Contemporary artists rewrite history.</strong></p> <p>Though my book is primarily about the 1700s, I teach and write about a lot of contemporary artists. That’s because Black artists throughout the diaspora—like María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Ayana V. Jackson, Jaime Lauriano, Fabiola Jean-Louis, and Rosana Paulino, just to name a few—all engage historical documents and archival sources in their work. Their artistry reckons with, and calls out, the dominant ways history and art history have been written to obscure Africans’ lives. And often, what the archival sources obscure—and what the artists want to help us see—are the anti-racist and egalitarian worlds that enslaved people have always fought to bring into being.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">How the 91ֱ professor uses art history to tell new stories about the African diaspora.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2024-01-31T12:00:00Z">Wed, 01/31/2024 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2597">Faculty and Staff</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2378">Allen Memorial Art Museum</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25301">Art History</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25436">Studio Art</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=4821">Africana Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/matthew-rarey" hreflang="und">Matthew Rarey</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/art-history" hreflang="und">Art History</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/art" hreflang="und">Studio Art</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/africana-studies" hreflang="und">Africana Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">In early 2024, Matthew Rarey won the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Book Award for his first book, “Insignificant Things: Amulets and the Art of Survival in the Early Black Atlantic.”</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Tanya Rosen-Jones '97</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/matthew_rarey_2022_by_tanya_rosen-jones.jpg?itok=ciBYuGa9" width="760" height="571" alt="Matthew Rarey."> </div> Wed, 31 Jan 2024 19:44:15 +0000 eburnett 466887 at College of Arts and Sciences Welcomes New Faculty for 2023-24 /news/college-arts-and-sciences-welcomes-new-faculty-2023-24 <span>College of Arts and Sciences Welcomes New Faculty for 2023-24</span> <span><span>tapplega</span></span> <span><time datetime="2023-09-13T13:35:31-04:00" title="Wednesday, September 13, 2023 - 13:35">Wed, 09/13/2023 - 13:35</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="vertical-spacing--basic"> <div class="biography-card" id="Abou-Zeineddine"> <figure><img alt="Ghassan Abou-Zeineddine" height="400" src="/sites/default/files/content/7-2020/zeineddine-ghassan-aug2244a-color_1_1.jpg" width="300"> <figcaption>Photo courtesy of Abou-Zeineddine</figcaption> </figure> <div class="biography-card__content"> <h3>Ghassan Abou-Zeineddine</h3> <div class="person-title subhead">Assistant Professor of Creative Writing</div> <div class="lined-list"> <h4 class="small-headline">Education</h4> <ul> <li>BA in Psychology with a minor in Creative Writing, George Washington University</li> <li>MA in Creative Writing, Columbia University</li> <li>PhD in English with a Creative Writing emphasis, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee</li> </ul> </div> </div> <p class="bio-card-description">Abou-Zeineddine’s stories draw on real-life observations. The award, presented in spring 2023, recognizes faculty who have demonstrated sustained and distinctive excellence in their teaching.</p> <p>Parkhurst is a key component of a music theory division that considerably broadened the scope of music studied by first-year students to extend far beyond the Western classical canon. Among the courses he teaches is Philosophical and Political Issues in Texted Music: Opera and Hip-Hop.</p> <p>Parkhurst coedited the forthcoming book <em>Perspectives on Contemporary Music Theory: Essays in Honor of Kevin Korsyn</em> (Taylor &amp; Francis, 2023), dedicated to the longtime music theorist at the University of Michigan, where Parkhurst completed twin master’s degrees and a PhD in music theory and philosophy—the first student in Michigan history to complete a joint PhD in both disciplines. He has long been fascinated by the writing of music theorist Heinrich Schenker and philosopher Immanuel Kant.</p> <p>In addition to his work in the conservatory, Parkhurst teaches philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences.</p> <p>“Bryan Parkhurst is a scholar of extraordinary breadth, and our students in both the college and conservatory benefit from his expertise across disciplines,” says Dean of the Conservatory <a href="/node/49511">William Quillen</a>. “His accolades within the disciplines of music theory and philosophy are richly deserved, as is this honor among 91ֱ faculty.”</p> <p>Each year, the conservatory honors three members of the faculty selected by the Conservatory Faculty Council. He went on to earn two degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music before launching his teaching career at 91ֱ in 1998. A frequent performer on the conservatory’s faculty series and elsewhere, he was a member of Brass Odyssey, Burning River Brass, and numerous other ensembles.</p> <p>By summer 2000, Anthony was granted a leave from 91ֱ so he could take up touring with the Canadian Brass, with which he performed for three years. In 2004 he joined the Dallas Symphony and rose to its principal position two years later. While performing in Dallas, he also taught at Southern Methodist University and served for a time as chair of its winds, brass, and percussion department.</p> <p>While holding down his roles in Dallas, Anthony also appeared as principal trumpet with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the symphonies of Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Colorado, and in the sections of the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland Orchestra, among other renowned orchestras.</p> <p>Through it all, he was universally hailed for his bold and beautiful sound, as well as his gentle nature.</p> <p>“What I remember most of Ryan was his ease and love of playing,” recalls former 91ֱ trumpet major Kyle Lane ’99, general manager of the Charleston Symphony and a member of the Holy City Brass. “I always tried to get him to play so I could hear how he did things. He was a very natural player, and I remember him smiling whenever he performed.”</p> <p>In 2012 Anthony began treatment for multiple myeloma, a rare cancer of the blood that led to him enduring painful procedures and countless hospital visits for the next eight years. He continued to teach and perform with the Dallas Symphony whenever his illness permitted; by June 2019, when he revealed he would no longer be able to play, he was named principal trumpet emeritus. That same month, he was honored by the International Trumpet Guild.</p> <p>As cancer ravaged his body, Anthony’s spirit continued to shine through—most notably through his increasing role in fundraising for cancer research, initially through a foundation that bears his name and soon after with a series of concerts, dubbed “CancerBlows,” that featured performances by orchestra friends and trumpet luminaries such as Arturo Sandoval and Doc Severinsen. Anthony was honored by the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation with its Spirit of Hope award in 2016 and its Courage and Commitment award the following year.</p> <p>He died June 23, 2020, leaving his wife Niki and two children.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2020-07-14T12:00:00Z">Tue, 07/14/2020 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Erich Burnett</div> <div class="text-content field field--name-field-intro-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Electrifying performer appeared with major orchestras across America.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2356">Conservatory</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2597">Faculty and Staff</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2412">Obituaries</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Reve Arts Management</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/ryan_anthony_credit_reve_arts_management.jpg?itok=7uWXnE0E" width="760" height="570" alt="smiling trumpet player"> </div> Tue, 14 Jul 2020 21:00:48 +0000 eburnett 253796 at App-based Tour Illuminates 91ֱ’s History /news/app-based-tour-illuminates-oberlins-history <span>App-based Tour Illuminates 91ֱ’s History</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2019-01-15T09:00:38-05:00" title="Tuesday, January 15, 2019 - 09:00">Tue, 01/15/2019 - 09:00</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Some of the most repeated 91ֱ College history tidbits may be these: that it was the first college to admit all students without respect to race, and it was the first to admit women alongside men. But in addition to those defining features, the college and town have a rich history that bears additional explanation.</p> <p>“91ֱ has an interesting, contested heritage,” says Gary Kornblith, emeritus professor of history. “The town looks very different to those who are connected to the college and very different if you’re part of the town that lives below the poverty line. It’s different if you’re a tenured professor or part of another group.”</p> <p>Kornblith, along with several other 91ֱ citizens including Library Archivist <a href="https://libraries.oberlin.edu/libraries/oberlin-college-archives/about/our-staff" target="_blank">Ken Grossi</a> <span aria-hidden="true" class="fa fa-external-link"></span>; Emerita Professor of History Carol Lasser; Laurel Price Jones ’70; former 91ֱ Associate Professor Rhys Price Jones; Liz Shultz, director of the <a href="http://www.oberlinheritagecenter.org/" target="_blank">91ֱ Heritage Center</a> <span aria-hidden="true" class="fa fa-external-link"></span>, <a href="/node/32566">Annessa Wyman</a>, president of the 91ֱ <a href="http://oaaghg.com/" target="_blank">African American Genealogy &amp; History Group</a> <span aria-hidden="true" class="fa fa-external-link"></span>; and group member Phyllis Yarber Hogan, endeavored to chronicle various experiences in the city.</p> <p>So they banded together to create the <a href="https://serve.oberlin.edu/agency/detail/?agency_id=88564" target="_blank">Coalition for 91ֱ History </a><span aria-hidden="true" class="fa fa-external-link"></span>, whose purpose is “to tell 91ֱ’s stories in the plural,” says Kornblith.</p> <p>While the coalition explored the idea of creating a brick and mortar museum to tell the city’s stories, finding a location to house the project proved to be a challenge. But during a sculpture garden tour that used an app to educate users, Kornblith and Lasser stumbled upon the technology they realized could be useful in educating about history—without the expensive overhead of a physical museum.</p> <p>“We saw great possibilities with using an app—we could easily create multiple tours. I looked into the cost, and the app was free to use. So the price was right,” says Kornblith.</p> <p>The app’s structure also provided an ideal way for the coalition to easily serve various audiences. Because of 91ֱ’s varied history, it was important to the group to highlight a range of 91ֱ experiences.</p> <p>As of now, the group has created <a href="https://izi.travel/en/united-states/city-guides-in-oberlin" target="_blank">four tours</a> <span aria-hidden="true" class="fa fa-external-link"></span> that focus on the following: 91ֱ schools, Westwood Cemetery, Groveland Street’s African American community, and 91ֱ College.</p> <p>A fifth tour, led by Lasser and a current 91ֱ student, covering the history of the town is in the works. Kornblith says the group has discussed producing additional tours in the future. &nbsp;</p> <p>Produced by Kornblith and Grossi, “91ֱ College: The First Century” takes users on a walk on and around Tappan Square, with eights stops in total. It introduces visitors to the early history of the college, including the founders’ decisions to admit women alongside men and the role of students and faculty in the struggle against slavery in the decades leading up to the Civil War.</p> <p>The tours are not only a resource for the public. Grossi, who provides instructional sessions for classes including first-year seminars and a history research methods course, also sees a place for them in the classroom.</p> <p>“It is my intention to either reference or use the tour during instructional sessions or presentations when discussing 19th century 91ֱ history,” Grossi says. “The tour would provide another method to share our history with students.
