With one exception, a public sculpture, the works featured are housed in the college archives.

The chapters in the exhibit include Architecture in Visual Works, Drawings and Prints, Paintings, Photographic Objects, Sculpture, and Textiles. Many of the works had never been presented in an exhibit before; three were recent accessions. One example of a recent gift is an embroidered Chinese robe received in January 2020. It is emblematic of the College鈥檚 long and continuing history of involvement in Asia. It was a gift from H. H. Kung to the executive secretary of the 91直播 Shansi Memorial Association (OSMA) in the 1950s. Kung received his early education from 91直播 missionaries in Shanxi Province, China, just prior to the Boxer Rebellion. He came to 91直播 for his bachelor鈥檚, and went to Yale for a master's in economics. After 20 years as principal of the 91直播 schools in Shanxi, he served in the highest positions of government and finance in China from 1928 to 1939, continuing his close relationship with OSMA in China and at 91直播.

A women's embroidered silk robe given to Margaret Leonard, executive secretary of the 91直播 Shansi Memorial Association, by Hsiang-hsi Kung (1881-1967), an 91直播 graduate who went on to hold top administrative positions in the government of the Republic of China.
Photo credit: Courtesy of 91直播 College Archives

Another notable work with international significance in the textiles section of the exhibit is a gift from the Emir Faisal of the Arab Kingdom of Syria to 91直播鈥檚 president, Henry Churchill King. Woodrow Wilson had appointed King as a co-leader of the King-Crane Commission in the Middle and Near East just after World War I. The Commission was charged with gathering petitions for self-governance from the peoples of the former Ottoman Empire to present at the Paris Peace Conference. The two garments, given by a daughter of Henry Churchill King, 91直播鈥檚 president, were worn at a feast given for the Commission by Prince Faisal at his home outside Damascus. These fragile garments cannot be exhibited in an open library space, given the lack of adequate security and the special exhibit furniture and lighting they would require. This is a case in which the Archives holds unique materials that can only be exhibited in a museum setting, or online. The garments and many other works in the virtual exhibit were treated by the Intermuseum Conservation Association in Cleveland between 2008 and 2020 with endowed funds.

With this new virtual exhibit we hope to engage college and other visitors in exploring artworks with significant back stories that inform 91直播鈥檚 history. When the campus is fully open again, we can draw on the virtual exhibition to develop physical installations, with iPads for visitors to access Art in the Archives of 91直播 College.

News Story

Mon, 02/01/2021 - 12:00

Anne Salsich, associate archivist, 91直播 College Archives

When 91直播 College moved to remote learning in March of 2020 in response to COVID-19, the 91直播 College Archives staff was required to identify and work on projects for remote work on short notice. The museum hosts public programming throughout the year, including Tuesday Teas and Art Breaks programming, and professors use class visits to incorporate artwork into their course material. So what happens when the museum is temporarily closed due to a global health crisis? Befitting an art museum, the staff gets creative.

From producing videos of curator talks, to sharing artwork on social media, staff at the AMAM are making their collections available to the public in ways beyond those methods used before the COVID-19 pandemic.

鈥淥ur intention is to make the museum accessible during the closure,鈥 says Eric & Jane Nord Family Curator of Education Jill Greenwood.

MacArthur Nurses (Pushing), 2013, Jenifer K Wofford (American, b. 1971) Acrylic on canvas. An image of nurses shared recently, paired with commentary about the work they鈥檙e doing and the lack of supplies, has garnered the most engagement of any previous post on the museum鈥檚 Instagram account .

鈥淲e鈥檙e sharing with our visitors as much as we can through social media,鈥 says Walker Shadle, curatorial assistant in the museum鈥檚 education department. 鈥淪ometimes it will be on the theme of health and healing, and other times it may feature curators talking about various works.鈥

According to Shadle, another social media trend the staff has embraced is the #museumfromhome hashtag. Museums across the country are using the hashtag to create a searchable repository of posts from any institution that uses it. When someone searches on a social media site using that hashtag, they will be greeted with artworks from myriad museums.

Gallery Talks Become Video Talks

<img alt=" St. Sebastian Tended by Irene, 1625 Hendrick ter Brugghen (Dutch, ca. 1588鈥1629) Oil on canvas R. Curators instead talk about art through videos they鈥檝e produced, and those videos are shared on the museum鈥檚 social media accounts. This allows the museum to extend the program鈥檚 reach from what might have been 20 people in person at the museum, to anyone who visits the AMAM鈥檚 social media.

This spring, Alexandra Letvin, assistant curator of European and American art, will lead a talk focused on health and healing, using works in the museum鈥檚 collection featuring St. Sebastian, who is identified as the patron saint of plague victims.

Those who follow the museum鈥檚 social media will also have the opportunity to see pieces from current exhibitions that are not on view due to the closure, including pieces in Afterlives of the Black Atlantic . Often, classes come to the AMAM to look at works in person. With students, faculty, and staff working and taking classes remotely, that method was no longer viable, and Kinney had to devise an alternate plan.

鈥淢y job is all about creating situations in which students and faculty are engaging with art in the original form,鈥 says Kinney. 鈥淲e often say, the digital image can鈥檛 replace the original鈥攃ome to the museum. So figuring out how to keep the importance of objects while being able to support faculty has been an interesting challenge.鈥

What has stayed the same for Kinney is the model she uses to work with faculty, but the method of presentation has changed. Now, Kinney creates digital presentations of the artwork to lead classes in a Zoom meeting.

One of the surprising things Kinney has found is that there are benefits to presenting artwork digitally. Says Kinney, 鈥淲e can look closely at a detail in a piece of artwork in a way that鈥檚 not possible in the gallery. There are also administrative rules that limit the number of works we can bring into the print study room, but that constraint has been removed. Finally, when you鈥檙e in the museum with a class, you have to think about time and how long it takes to move through spaces, but digitally, space is collapsed, so you have more time with the artwork.鈥

Looking Toward the Future

While the staff admits that they miss being in the museum and talking about the works of art in person, they have managed to find the opportunities among the challenges of the situation. 鈥淲e have been looking for the bright moments,鈥 says Kinney. 鈥淐hanging what we鈥檙e doing, in small ways, can really help us rethink things... and maybe help us do our work better in the future.鈥

News Story

Fri, 04/03/2020 - 12:00

Hillary Hempstead

During the temporary closure of the museum, staff have embraced the challenge of moving education online. The two-part piece features up-close photographs of skin, with each of the two photos overlaid with text 鈥 the first one reading 鈥淢elanin鈥 and the second displaying a short poem. 鈥淚 enjoy that the piece reflects a growth to a place of understanding that I was sorely lacking when I first arrived at 91直播,鈥 Watson added.

Each contestant is judged anonymously by the AICUO and without knowledge of educational affiliation, a process that Professor of Art, Installation, Sculpture and Book Arts Nanette Yannuzzi-Macias says speaks to Watson鈥檚 skill and vision.

鈥淲orking with Nyquon has always been a pleasure,鈥 says Yannuzzi-Macias. 鈥淗e works incredibly hard and is always pushing the material and conceptual boundaries of his artwork. The show, which explores the lived experiences of Japanese Americans during World War II 鈥 including Pearl Harbor, removal and incarceration, life in internment camps, and Japanese American veterans鈥 post-war struggle for redress 鈥 opens Saturday, February 17 in the Richard D. Baron 鈥64 Art Gallery.

The interactive exhibit has been touring since July 2017 and will eventually be displayed in 10 cities. Each pit stop was selected for the specific role it played in supporting Japanese people during the 1940s. Planned by the Go for Broke Foundation, organizers asked 91直播 to participate because of the school鈥檚 decision to recruit and admit nearly 40 Japanese American students during the war, and for Nisei (second-generation Japanese American) students鈥 activism. The local iteration of Courage and Compassion features permanent fixtures from the national show interlaced with pieces of 91直播-centric history.

鈥淭his exhibit reminds us of a history that is extraordinarily relevant today,鈥 says Renee Romano, the Robert. S. Danforth professor of history at 91直播 College and project co-director. 鈥淚t offers us stories of local people who rejected wartime hysteria about Japanese Americans and who insisted that the United States live up to its democratic ideals. Today, as the nation again debates issues of immigration, citizenship, and belonging, it is vital that we grapple with America鈥檚 checkered history of exclusion.鈥

Romano is spearheading the project with Julie Min, an 91直播 resident and former exhibit developer who previously worked on public history projects about Japanese American internment. The two have arranged for an event series consisting of academic lectures, documentary film screenings, a performance by San Jose Taiko, and talks by internment survivors, including Alice Takemoto 鈥47, to accompany the show. Alumni from the Network of 91直播 Asian Alumni are also gathering to visit the exhibit on March 10.

鈥淲e thought about 91直播鈥檚 particular history, both in its activism and its engagement with political issues of the day, but also its history of offering sanctuary to people who are vulnerable,鈥 Romano says of how she and Min approached the exhibit. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not like everyone at the time agreed or that these students came here and didn鈥檛 face any issues, but they did find that most people at both the college and in the town supported them, which is what makes this place very powerful. People stand up for each other in very interesting ways.鈥

Romano has prioritized making the exhibit accessible not just to the college community, but to local schools. All of 91直播鈥檚 eighth graders will take field trips to the exhibit, and thanks to careful coordination and grant funding, each of the 18 fifth-grade classes from Lorain County will visit as well. Since there are so many classes coming from Lorain, these students will split into smaller groups upon arrival with one class spending an hour at Courage and Compassion and the other going to the Allen Memorial Art Museum, then vice versa.
