The two degrees can be completed in five years: the first four on 91ֱ��’s bucolic campus, followed by a fifth year set amid the vibrant professional arts community of nearby Cleveland.</p><p>“What is most inspiring about this new BA+BFA pathway is that it emerged organically,” says <a href="/node/4921">David Kamitsuka</a>, Dean of 91ֱ��’s College of Arts and Sciences. “It developed through an extraordinary, collaborative commitment among our arts faculty to design a program that is attuned to the future of the art world and attentive to the aspirations of our endlessly creative and thoughtful students.” </p><p>Students in the program complete courses in their chosen BA major, <a href="/arts-and-sciences/areas-of-study">selecting from more than 50 areas of study</a> offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. They also take 10 additional courses in the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/practicing-arts">practicing arts</a>, which may include cinema and media, creative writing, dance, musical studies, studio art, and theater.</p><p>In year five, students live and work in Cleveland, with 24-hour access to private studios, rehearsal spaces, theaters, and production facilities. This immersive arts year is dedicated to completing a substantial, public-facing project—a performance, exhibition, or installation, for example—determined in collaboration with their 91ֱ�� faculty mentors.</p><p>Unlike traditional BFA programs, which require selection of a single area of study, 91ֱ��’s BFA in Integrated Arts invites students to shape their own path by incorporating other disciplines into their individual artistic practice. The majors not only have broad faculty support but their creation was driven by faculty desire to expand our curriculum to meet evolving student interests and the opportunities and challenges of our complex world.</p><p>In the College of Arts and Sciences, the new majors are Business, Financial Economics, Environmental Science, Communication Studies, and Data Science. The Conservatory of Music has added Music Theater and Recording Arts and Production.</p><p>Recording Arts and Production, Financial Economics, and Communication Studies welcomed their first classes this fall. All other programs will be available to incoming students in fall 2025. For more than 25 years, CTCL has promoted student-centered college searches, spotlighting standards found only within liberal arts institutions and faculty dedicated to mentoring students. To a tee, this is 91ֱ��.</p> <p>CTCL is a nonprofit based on Loren Pope’s book of the same name. Pope, a longtime <em>New York Times</em> education editor and journalist, sought to alter the way students and families approached the college-search process. In its first eight years, the nonprofit has helped some 300 students earn scholarships totaling more than $38 million, with plans for 200 additional scholarships to be administered in 2023-24 alone. Ross Peacock, assistant vice president for institutional research and planning sees this as a unique entry in the rankings industry. "The notion of measuring the influence that a school's faculty and alumni have, speaks to the central mission of colleges such as 91ֱ��—to prepare students to meet challenges and to make positive and meaningful contributions to their communities and the world."</p> <p>Developed by a team of academics and data scientists, Academic Influence looks to provide an objective, non-gameable influence-based ranking for the people, schools, and disciplines that make up higher education. The system is based on the idea that the people affiliated with a school are ultimately what make it great or what Academic Influence calls "concentrated influence."</p> <p>Academic Influence searches open-source data in Wikipedia and CrossRef that look at scientific and scholarly articles to determine how influential people are in a particular field. It then looks at where these individuals went to school or where they work as professors to develop a combined influence score for a college or university. To develop a concentrated influence score, the combined influence score of an institution's faculty and alumni is divided by the school's number of undergraduates. SAT and ACT score submissions will still be accepted, but will no longer be required for first-year and transfer applicants.</p> <p>The effects of COVID-19 on high school students around the world have been significant. Constant disheartening news, family disruptions, and health concerns are now a part of everyday life. Many have seen their academic schedules altered as schools have moved to virtual settings, grading scales have changed, and programs such as Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate have been affected.</p> <p>During these uncertain times, standardized testing presents yet another challenge. With many testing dates having already been canceled and with many schools closed for the remainder of the year, the testing requirement now presents an access issue for our applicants.</p> <p>“We are making this change to provide some comfort during the application process to students who are already living through a seismic shift in their path toward college,” says Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Manuel Carballo. “It also continues a pattern of reducing barriers and increasing access that 91ֱ�� College has undertaken the last several years.”</p> <p>This has included the elimination of the application fee for applicants to the College of Arts and Sciences, allowing students to self-report their standardized test results, eliminating the 91ֱ�� specific essay, and providing financial aid estimates through MyinTuition.org.</p> <p>This policy will underscore that admissions decisions do not overly emphasize testing and also will allow applicants to highlight their many academic and personal strengths. “A test-optional policy fits well with 91ֱ�� College’s holistic review that weighs a student’s four-year academic journey, including grades, strength of schedule, and teacher recommendations, more heavily than the results of standardized tests,” says Carballo.</p> <p>Students will still have the option of submitting test scores, and these will continue to be considered in the review of applications.
