The weekend coincides with special reunion activities welcoming back 91直播鈥檚 60th cluster classes of 1961, 1962, and 1963, and 10th cluster classes of 2011, 2012, and 2013.

The festivities kick off Friday, October 7, with performances by jazz studies majors in Cat in the Cream, a Homecoming TGIF in Wilder Bowl, a program recognizing donors Todd & Thomasina Houston Philips for upgrades to Philips Physical Education Center, and a concert by Jeffrey Lewis at the 鈥楽co.

On Saturday, the final round of the 2021-22 Senior Concerto Competition happens at 9:30 a.m. in Finney Chapel. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the community is invited to a Heisman Club tailgate at Knowlton Athletics Complex, with food provided by five local vendors and live entertainment by conservatory musicians, followed by 91直播 Football vs. Kenyon College at Bailey Field. Later in the day, the Heisman Club hosts a Title IX 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Knowlton Complex (registration required). In the evening, 91直播 Women鈥檚 Soccer faces off with Denison University at 7 p.m. on Shults Field, followed by a public fireworks display beginning at 9 p.m. Capping off the night is music by Puerto Rican-Panamanian DJ Bembona at the 鈥橲co.

View the complete Homecoming Weekend 2022 calendar of events here.

News Story

Tue, 09/27/2022 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Events

Alumni

Athletics

Community

Off

false

Tue, 27 Sep 2022 19:53:22 +0000 anagy 432966 at Community Mural Project Highlights Aspects of 91直播 /news/community-mural-project-highlights-aspects-oberlin Community Mural Project Highlights Aspects of 91直播 ygay Tue, 09/14/2021 - 11:01

More than 100 town and college members picked up artists' brushes and applied their painting skills to a 32-foot mural in Carpenter Court late last month during Community Paint Day. She returned to 91直播 in 2008 and opened a portrait studio in the downtown area.

With artists and community members lending a hand, and donated lemonade and water from local churches nearby, the August installation was completed in just two weeks. However, groundwork for the We Are 91直播 Mural Project was two years in the making.

The mural design is added to the wall. (A still image from the video is seen at right.)

Choral Fantasy鈥攚hich Beethoven wrote in 1808 as the concluding piece of a benefit concert that also included the premieres of his fifth and sixth symphonies鈥攈ad already been envisioned as part of 91直播鈥檚 continuing celebration of the 250th anniversary of the composer鈥檚 birth. It was originally scheduled to take place in October in Finney Chapel, in a world not gripped by pandemic. Instead, it was painstakingly prepared by Chang鈥檚 musicians and those from Rochester who joined in the collaboration, with each musician or ensemble provided a previously recorded track as a guidepost for their own contribution, and each successive track ultimately blended, layer by layer, into a final recording.

Audio for the Toprak and Beethoven was produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer Stephen Roessner, a faculty member at Rochester. She wound up with sopranos Caitlin Aloia 鈥20 (a winner of 91直播鈥檚 2020 Senior Concerto Competition) and Julia Dawson 鈥11 (of the Frankfurt Opera), mezzo-soprano Rebecca Printz 鈥16 (Tanglewood and Marlboro fellow), tenors Carlos Enrique Santelli 鈥14 (2018 Metropolitan Opera Competition winner) and Daniel McGrew 鈥15 (Tanglewood fellow), and baritone Elliott Carlton Hines '12 (Stuttgart Opera).

Also featured is a virtual choir made up of more than 60 91直播 students, faculty, parents, alumni, staff, and other musicians from around the world, led by Olivia Fink '21.

鈥淎 lot of our choir and orchestra members have mentioned that they really appreciated feeling like they were playing with other people,鈥 says Chang. 鈥淭hey felt like they were playing in an actual orchestra because of the track we provided.鈥

In addition to 35 minutes of music, the program includes a brief intermission segment that peers behind the scenes and includes reflections from participants in the project.

91直播鈥檚 collaboration with Rochester鈥攚hich includes Choral Fantasy as well as Captain Marvel鈥攇rew in part out of Chang鈥檚 friendship with Rochester conductor Rachel Waddell, whom Chang met in 2019 at the Hart Institute for Women Conductors, presented by the Dallas Opera.

鈥淲e actually didn鈥檛 start by saying, 鈥極h, let鈥檚 combine our orchestra ensembles!鈥欌 Chang says. 鈥淚 was designing this virtual component because I knew we wouldn鈥檛 be able to have a real, live one. I really didn鈥檛 want it to be a traditional livestream experience. I wanted a more visually engaging experience that adds to the music in some way or that correlates to the music in some way.鈥

Ultimately, the challenges faced by Chang mirrored those of her Rochester colleagues. Joining forces for the performance, as well as the semester鈥檚 workshops and other shared experiences, simply made sense to everyone involved.

鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing that we were able to pull this off,鈥 says Chang, who devoted countless hours to producing the final piece, in addition to various trailers and other promotional materials. 鈥淭o have all of these moving pieces fall into place exactly when they were supposed to鈥t鈥檚 a miracle. I can鈥檛 imagine if something would have happened in, say, October. If we would have had to shut down or modify our activities further, none of this would have been able to happen.鈥

For that miracle, Chang credits the steadfast dedication of 91直播 students and administrators, who adhered to the campus鈥 stringent guidelines and sustained an extremely low rate of infection throughout autumn, even as cases spiked in surrounding communities and elsewhere.

鈥淭he plan I devised in summer went surprisingly smoothly,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t happened just as planned.鈥

However compelling, Chang knows the prerecorded program can鈥檛 replace a live musical experience鈥斺渁nd I certainly hope it doesn鈥檛 replace the live concert experience,鈥 she says.

鈥淏ut I also hope this way of presenting music and musicians creates a little more intimacy and more of a sense of the power of collaboration, that there is a lot of power in bringing a lot of people together.鈥

News Story

Thu, 12/10/2020 - 12:00

Erich Burnett

Virtual performance draws upon musicians from the college, community, conservatory, and elsewhere.

Conservatory

Community

Musical Opportunities for College Students

Ensembles & Orchestras

Conducting

Musical Studies

Conducting and Ensembles

Musical Studies

Off

false

Courtesy of Tiffany Chang

Thu, 10 Dec 2020 16:09:48 +0000 eburnett 314041 at New York Times names catalogue of AMAM鈥檚 Eva Hesse collection a Best Art Book of 2020 /news/new-york-times-names-catalogue-amams-eva-hesse-collection-best-art-book-2020 New York Times names catalogue of AMAM鈥檚 Eva Hesse collection a Best Art Book of 2020 swargo Tue, 12/08/2020 - 12:29

Eva Hesse: 91直播 Drawings, a catalogue of the artist鈥檚 works held by the Allen Memorial Art Museum at 91直播 College, has been selected by the New York Times as one of its Best Art Books of 2020. He was forced to discontinue the production of Peter and the Starcatcher when the college closed in March at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

鈥樷榃e were right in the middle of the production process when the realities of COVID hit us and the school said 鈥榚veryone out 鈥︹ So in the spirit of the show must go on, I decided I would work really hard to find a way to do a play in what was going to have to be a new pandemic performance mode.

鈥樷楾hanks to the coronavirus,鈥欌 Flaharty says, 鈥樷榬eimagining the way we operate at all levels has been full of inventions; and particularly, finding ways in which our department can continue to achieve its mission of producing theater works with our students. This has been one of the most important challenges to tackle in the 91直播-in-Covid-era.鈥欌

This new performance mode will not materialize on stage; rather, it will be an audio play. Flaharty, who also is an associate professor of theater, will direct students in The Misanthrope.

It鈥檚 a satiric comedy in five acts by the French actor and playwright Moli猫re. The main character, Alceste, is a 17th-century gentleman who is disgusted by the vanity and hypocrisy of society. His response is to be completely honest no matter the cost. Alceste falls in love with the beautiful C茅lim猫ne, who is noted for her sharp tongue and manipulative socializing, making her the epitome of the type of person he professes to detest. Can love win? Can love stand up to truth? Flaharty chose The Misanthrope as it offers a relief from 21st-century anxiety and timeless insights into the foolish heart of humanity.

And while this is the theater department鈥檚 first audio play, Flaharty says faculty and staff are prepared for the challenge, as they鈥檝e been dealing with a variety of issues brought on by the pandemic which the college has worked hard to mitigate.

鈥樷楤ecause there can be no live audiences this semester, there can be no live performing, no staging, no set, no costumes 鈥,鈥欌 Flaharty continues, 鈥樷榮o the audio play, an old-school yet freshly revived format, provides vivid engagement with theater-making even when restrictions that would sabotage a live, staged production are a condition of the process. Many theaters are looking to create plays through podcasting or invoking the compelling entertainment of radio plays of yore. It feels like a satisfying genre to launch the theater season that will have to pioneer solutions to production challenges.鈥欌

The fall Main Stage production of the audio play will be distributed digitally for three days only, November 20-22. Interested persons must register in advance to get free access to the performances.

Verbal expressions and hand gestures bring characters to life via audio. With The Misanthrope, it was specifically chosen as a play that can work without a lot of visual cues,鈥樷 he says. 鈥欌橦ighlighting the language of the play might actually enhance the experience. I would have wanted to be involved regardless, but I was excited to be doing it this way.鈥欌

鈥樷樷楥reating an audio play made sense to me,鈥欌 adds Zeke Schmiedl, who has a supporting role as Oronte. 鈥樷業t was a safe way to continue theater in COVID-19. I decided to jump right in and learn about how theater can continue during a worldwide crisis while enjoying myself along the way.鈥欌

This is the first 91直播 production for the first-year cinema studies and theater major and he doesn't plan for it to be his last. 鈥樷業t was a joy to work with my voice along with such a great cast. It's definitely something I would recommend to other actor friends to try out.鈥欌

Garciela Fernandez, also a first-year student, was just as eager to take part. The theater and psychology major had never done an audio play and didn鈥檛 know what to expect. 鈥樷業鈥檝e found it interesting how much I rely on mannerisms and facial expressions when I鈥檓 acting. It鈥檚 been a pretty eye-opening experience learning how to vocalize those usually physical mannerisms,鈥欌 she says. 鈥業t was totally different than anything I鈥檝e done before. 鈥欌

Flaharty鈥檚 version of the French play draws from British playwright Neil Bartlett and is set in contemporary Hollywood. The social world of the film industry mimics the insular world of Louis XIV鈥檚 court of Moli猫re鈥檚 time, he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really a strong character play, expressed through brilliant conversation.鈥

The play also reflects the isolation many experience because of these pandemic times. Most communication is at a distance, and entirely verbal or written, he says, adding 鈥溾t's all about using words as both a weapon and a shield to deal with other people鈥檚 assaults on your integrity, and perhaps your heart, in a society fueled by manufactured images and daily hypocrisies.鈥

Preparation and rehearsals have taken on different formats, Flaharty explains鈥攊n person with facial masks and socially distanced with hand sanitizer in tow, and on Zoom, unmasked and in solo performances with opportunities to join each other in shared grids. 鈥樷楾he great positive of performing this play this semester is that our actors鈥攁 truly wonderful ensemble drawn from all three on-campus classes鈥攎ust focus on performing with their voices, still using all the tools of a fine actor to get to the ultimate expression of their characters, but in an audio world.鈥欌

Once registered, attendees will receive an email on November 20 with access information and passwords. An email address is required. Flaharty encourages attendees to bring their imagination and a bowl of popcorn.

Register now to access The Misanthrope audio production.
View a rehearsal of The Misanthrope on 91直播 Flickr .

News Story

Tue, 11/17/2020 - 12:00

Marsha Lynn Bragg

The curtain has closed on many professional, community, and college theaters throughout the country due largely to the global pandemic. The program launched in summer 2020 and will continue into the winter and spring.

鈥淚t was very successful. We鈥檝e been talking a lot about the importance of building community resilience, not only environmentally speaking, but in this age of the pandemic and thinking about ways we can support the 91直播 community,鈥 said Scholl.

Supporting the 91直播 community is what the GEF does best. Projects vary in size and scale, from smaller endeavors such as public composting bins to larger tasks such as retrofitting new lighting systems for buildings, the current undertaking of Stephan Ciulla 鈥21, the GEF鈥檚 Office of Sustainability liaison.

With the help of a fund set aside for efficiency loans, Ciulla is working to ensure the installation of LED bulbs and modernizing the lighting controls throughout the 91直播 College Science Center, which he says accounts for 3 percent of the total amount of energy the town uses. When the retrofit is complete, the funding provided for the project will come back to the GEF through the savings the college realizes in its electricity use and will then be used to support future projects. Other buildings that benefit from energy-efficient retrofits include Mary Church Terrell Library and Stevenson Hall.

No matter the size of the project, the GEF鈥檚 main goal is the betterment of both the college and the town in tandem. For example, the Environmental Dashboard monitor, display, and educational programming provides an inside look into 91直播鈥檚 collective efforts toward carbon neutrality, and the GEF recently funded monitors for 91直播鈥檚 newest public school. GEF also secured funding for bike fix-it stations outside the local middle and high schools.

For Ciulla, these projects lie at the core of the town-college connection. 鈥淎t the end of the day, it鈥檚 a really symbiotic relationship we have with the town, and providing our resources and making 91直播 College鈥檚 resources available to the public further strengthens that relationship into one that improves and builds upon social equity,鈥 he said.

Social equity is a founding principle of sustainability. For the GEF board, sustainability takes on social, economic, and environmental forms, but always comes down to the 鈥渆quitable access of resources,鈥 according to Ciulla. 鈥淲e ask how we can distribute resources to make sure that everyone has a fair chance in our community,鈥 he said.

Scholl emphasized that anyone can partake in the efforts toward a greener future.

鈥淲e want to debunk the idea that sustainability is elite and posh and something that only certain people can achieve if they pay a lot of money and buy certain environmentally-friendly products,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a community-driven system. In the toolkit for educators, the terms Latino/a and Hispanic are used interchangeably as a way to honor the national Hispanic Heritage Month program. The gender-neutral term Latinx is often used at 91直播 to include those who don鈥檛 identify with the gender binary.

The toolkit is a lesson plan that aligns with the state of Ohio鈥檚 standards for social studies curriculum. Jenn McGee-McManamon, the children鈥檚 education and curriculum coordinator for the Lorain Historical Society, created lessons that can be tailored to students and teachers of all grade levels. Because virtual learning is the norm for most students this year, she designed the lessons using Google Classroom.

Victor Leandry, executive director of El Centro, explains that the toolkit is one piece of a broader effort to create an archive of the more than 100-year history of Latinos living in Lorain County, beginning with the migration to the city of Lorain for job opportunities. Leandry is often asked to speak and give presentations on this rich history in schools, churches, and community organizations鈥攂ut up until now, there was no official historical archive from which he could draw on.

McGee-McManamon says the toolkit contains a lot of value for teachers. 鈥淚t鈥檚 based in history, but there are other subjects embedded in the lesson. The end piece is a mural of the cityscape of Lorain that the kids decorate.鈥

She says the toolkit received a 鈥渇antastic response鈥 from schools and educators in Lorain County.

A lesson plan slide from the toolkit for educators.

鈥淎s a historical society, we went to El Centro to ask for their information to have it represented in our museum, but we had literally two books in our archives,鈥 says McGee-McManamon. 鈥淲e had a lot of photographs, but not the core essence of the story of how people came here and how active the community is now.鈥

P茅rez teaches a course with Comparative American studies instructor Adrian Bautista called Latinx Oral History. He explains that he created Twine as a way to bring cohesion to the various ways events and student clubs are marketed, including the 91直播 events calendar, club fairs, and postering on campus. The pandemic has created new challenges for connecting students to virtual events, particularly first-years who may not be aware of the 91直播 events calendar.

Potter says academic departments will also benefit from wider exposure to the events they sponsor.

The app provides a personalized experience for users. W. Cowles Director Andria Derstine and Assistant Curator of Academic Programs Hannah Kinney, a group of about seven new faculty members were given guided tours of the galleries by curators of the Allen Memorial Art Museum, including stops by new exhibits.

College faculty and staff who wish to visit the museum may do so by appointment now through September 4. The museum will hold regular hours鈥10 a.m. to 5 p.m.鈥攆rom Tuesday to Friday starting on September 8. The galleries will be open to students, faculty, and staff who are holders of 91直播 College ID cards and participants in the college鈥檚 COVID-19 testing program. Masks and social distancing are required at all times.

Derstine and Kinney touch on some of the questions that visitors may have, from safety protocols to the use of the space for classes.

With the reopening of the museum, some people may be wondering what they can expect when they return to the space鈥攚hat protocols are in place. Can you tell us some of these changes?

DERSTINE: At the AMAM, we have implemented a variety of new safety protocols. These include:

Entrance only for students, faculty, and staff who are current holders of 91直播 College ID cards, and who are participating in the college鈥檚 COVID-19 testing program.

Checking IDs and recording names upon entry, in case of contact-tracing needs.

Copious signage throughout the museum regarding the requirement for masks and social distancing.

Hand sanitizing stations throughout the museum, and spray/wipes to clean lockers and portable stools, if those are used.

One-way stairs.

Gallery capacity limits to enable visitors to maintain a 6-foot distance from others. These range from seven in our smallest space (each side of the Stern Gallery, and the Nord and Willard-Newell galleries) to 32 (which includes both the King Sculpture Court and the four sides of its surrounding ambulatory).

Visitors may wonder if they are still able to explore the space as they did before the pandemic. Can you speak to that?

DERSTINE: Although we have many new safety protocols in place, our hope is that visitors will be able to experience the close connection to works on view that they did before. All of the galleries will be open and visitors should feel free to explore and enjoy them as they did before. We simply ask visitors to remain masked at all times, and to be aware of their social distance from others, as well as our gallery capacity limits. Should the limit be reached, visitors should move to another gallery until others have moved on.

A new small exhibit in the AMAM asks the question: How can Museum Labels be Antiracists? Photo credit: Dale Preston 鈥83

What new exhibits should visitors expect?

DERSTINE: The curators have organized several brand-new exhibitions for this fall, and we have also extended some exhibitions that were on view last March to enable more visitors to see them.

New exhibitions include Do It Again: Repetition as Artistic Strategy, 1945 to Now, which takes as subject repetition, in many different forms, in modern and contemporary art; and Topographies of Representation, which, in a year with a presidential election, the census, and the centenary of women鈥檚 suffrage, examines ways of looking at American representative democracy through works by four women artists.

Exhibitions that have been extended since the spring include Ukiyo-e Prints from the Mary Ainsworth Collection, which highlights more than 100 Japanese prints that were part of an important bequest from an 91直播 alumna of the Class of 1889; The Enchantment of the Everyday: East Asian Decorative Arts from the Permanent Collection, which showcases works in lacquer, jade, glass, ivory and other media; and Monkeys, Apes, and Mr. Freer, which presents three Japanese paintings that were among more than 100 Asian works donated to the AMAM in 1912 by important collector Charles Lang Freer. Additionally, the museum鈥檚 installation of African works, which was originally conceived by students in a 2016 art department seminar, has been modified, and includes several recent acquisitions.

Why do you think your space is important to visit, particularly during these times?

DERSTINE: The staff and I know from our own experiences, but also from comments by many visitors, that in addition to fostering education, relaxation, and enjoyment, art can provide comfort and solace in times of stress. For many people, getting out of normal routines and into a new space can promote creativity and a more positive outlook. Art is thought-provoking and can help create conversation and community, as well as illuminate鈥攁nd perhaps provide new perspectives on鈥攊mportant current issues. Our hope is that members of the college community will want to visit the museum not only because of its importance to a broad range of courses in the curriculum, but also simply to take a break, get into a new environment, and perhaps learn something new.

I understand classes will have the opportunity to use the sace this year. How will they be able to use it?

KINNEY: Even though social distancing has required us to make some adjustments, this year the AMAM鈥檚 Office of Academic Programs is continuing to provide interactive learning experiences that prioritize close looking, critical analysis, and creative thinking for all 91直播 students. As in years past, we will collaborate with faculty members to design museum visits that respond directly to the needs of their course. We will offer in-person, remote, and hybrid visits. In all cases, direct engagement with the AMAM鈥檚 collection will be central. In the galleries, we will use worksheets and VoiceThread to guide independent and small-group looking. On Zoom, discussions will be focused on high-quality images explored in intimate detail through the presentation platform Prezi. In many cases, content and questions first encountered on digital platforms will be enhanced by viewing sessions in the museum鈥檚 galleries and Print Study Room. As we鈥檝e adapted our teaching to the challenges we face this academic year, we鈥檝e concentrated on taking advantage of each platform鈥檚 affordances and using them to enhance one another. Throughout the constant reconfiguring and rethinking, we have been guided by our dedication to introducing students to the unique opportunities provided by having a rich museum collection, such as the AMAM鈥檚, on campus.

What do you enjoy about the museum?

DERSTINE: One of the things I enjoy most about the AMAM is that it is an encyclopedic museum鈥攖hat means, it has art from virtually all of the world鈥檚 cultures. Our collection spans 6,000 years and six continents, and includes works in all media, from the ancient Near East to today. I also enjoy how connected we are with our audiences, even in this challenging time of COVID-19. I encourage everyone to visit us online, as our education department has devised a number of public programs that will roll out each month via videos or webinars. We want to stay connected with the college and local communities through art鈥攅ven if we need to be a bit farther apart than usual.

News Story

Tue, 09/01/2020 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

Allen Memorial Art Museum

Community

Arts & Humanities

Art History

Studio Art

Studio Art

Faculty members explore the Willard-Newell Gallery in the Allen Memorial Art Museum.

Off

false

Dale Preston 鈥83

Tue, 01 Sep 2020 20:18:20 +0000 ygay 305996 at
