Tenor Joshua Blue '16 returned to campus to perform with 91ֱ�� Sinfonietta. Academic and residential life programming, like the library's Frederick Douglass Transcribathon, and A-House's Mardi Gras feast and Alumni Soul Session, gave the 91ֱ�� community opportunities to field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The month of January at 91ֱ�� is anything but winter slumber. Many students return to campus to learn a completely new skill or dive into an academic interest; others travel abroad for immersive experiences in language, culture, arts, and music. Some are gaining pre-professional skills through micro-internships sponsored by 91ֱ�� alumni and friends of the college.</p> <p>This year, some 2,500 students are engaged in projects through a four-week immersive venture of their choosing, individually or with a group, known as <a href="/winter-term">Winter Term</a>. </p> <p>Although a winter or January term is common at other colleges and universities, 91ֱ��’s Winter Term, now in its 55th year, isn’t confined to the classroom. Students use this time to explore a personal interest, develop new skills, conduct intensive research, prepare for careers, or expand an academic focus. Students are required to complete three Winter Term projects throughout their time at 91ֱ��, with 100 hours of work going toward each project.</p> <p>91ֱ��’s Winter Term takes many forms. An ever-growing <a href="/winter-term/winter-term-guide/winter-term-catalogue">catalog</a> offers faculty- and staff-led group projects, both domestically and abroad. Students are also free to design individual projects. For those who choose to stay on campus, 91ֱ�� offers a robust calendar of social events for the month of January that includes planned activities, outings, and excursions, so those who choose to stay in 91ֱ�� can easily engage with the community and build connections with fellow students. The on-campus experience culminates in a symposium-style festival of ideas, a Winter Term ball, and a winter-themed carnival.</p> <p>Here’s a sampling of where Winter Term will take Obies this month:</p> <ul> <li>Students in <a href="/news/oberlin-musicians-play-famed-new-york-city-venues-jan-19-20">91ֱ�� Conservatory ensembles</a> will present notable programs in New York City’s iconic venues January 19 and 20. Leading the way on Thursday, January 19, is the 91ֱ�� Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. 91ֱ��’s choral ensembles join forces with the 91ֱ�� Orchestra on Friday, January 20, at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium in a program that includes Nathaniel Dett’s (91ֱ�� Conservatory Class of 1908) oratorio “The Ordering of Moses.”</li> <li>91ֱ�� Theater is producing its mainstage production of <a href="/events/theater_mainstage_the_ophelia_project"><em>Ophelia: A Prism</em></a> by Meiko Gavia ’11, directed by H. Harvey ’11, with performances February 2-5.</li> <li>The <a href="/career/set/obs">Ashby Business Scholars</a> will travel to Cleveland, Boston, and New York City to learn from alumni and parents who work in business and finance. </li> <li>Students enrolled in the StudiOC learning community “Arab & Islamic Historical Memory” will travel to Cairo and other parts of Egypt to investigate issues of historical memory through the lens of the country’s museums. </li> <li>Professors <a href="/kirk-ormand">Kirk Ormand</a> and <a href="/jennifer-bryan">Jennifer Bryan</a> are leading a 17-day study tour of archaeological sites and museums of mainland Greece, with emphasis on the architectural and artistic remains of major sanctuaries and cult sites.</li> <li>Sixteen students will spend half the month in London to experience the city’s rich musical life. One such place is the Harvey House, or <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/hispanic-studies/la-casa-hispanica">La Casa Hispánica</a>, which regularly organizes social and cultural events, workshops, and talks. Filled with students who are native-Spanish speakers of Hispanic heritage and non-Hispanic students wanting to immerse themselves in a Spanish-speaking environment, one of the house’s most notable components is its language table—El Rincón.<br> <br> Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during lunch time, native Spanish speakers, students from Spanish 101 classes, and everyone in between gather in a conference room in Stevenson Dining Hall to take advantage of their peers’ willingness to help learn the language. Wayleen Arrieta Ariza, the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/hispanic-studies">Hispanic Studies</a> program assistant, says,“I like that you can practice your Spanish or the fact that you can take a topic from class and you can apply it to the table.”</p> <p>While the Spanish table is one of the more visible learning opportunities offered by the house’s community, Harvey House does a lot more. Events have included trivia and movie nights, celebrations of different holidays, and an annual Latino Festival. The most recent Latino Festival was hosted at a local retail store, Ben Franklin, in early October. Students and faculty showed up to taste home-cooked cuisine, hear Portuguese and Spanish music, and enjoy the opportunity to speak Spanish to peers and professors.</p> <p>The cultural immersion at 91ֱ�� College doesn’t stop there. For Día de los Muertos, Harvey House organized an event where they put up traditional <em>ofrendas</em> (altars) and invited the community to share in the tradition of the holiday with hot chocolate and <em>pan de muerto</em>, a type of sweet bread prepared for Day of the Dead.</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-left"> <figcaption>A Day of the Dead ofrenda (altar) in La Casa Hispánica. There are 30 students residing in the house, and according to Ariza, students are required to organize one event during the year. Her favorite house event is <em>almuerzo yuno</em> (brunch) organized by the resident assistant, program assistant, and the director of Harvey House, Yorki Encalada. All events are open to the public, except this brunch, which Ariza says is a great way to bond within the smaller community.</p> <p>Harvey House is a space for students who wish to integrate themselves into a community they want to learn about, or those looking to live in a familiar environment while speaking the language. In February 2023, Steenburgh will return to the country that was a source of cultural and academic inspiration with a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.</p> <p>A resident of Rockville, Maryland, Steenburgh spent a gap year with Global Citizen Year before enrolling at 91ֱ��. They stayed with a host family in Florianópolis, Brazil, immersed in the culture and language while working at a wildlife conservation facility.</p> <p>“My engagement with a diverse international cohort and the locals of Floripa enchanted me with the wonder of cultural and linguistic exchange, and this experience helped shape my college career,” says Steenburgh. After working full time with veterinarians and caretakers of monkeys, parrots, penguins, and turtles (among others), they decided to major in <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/biology">biology</a> and <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/environmental-studies">environmental studies</a> with a minor in <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/comparative-american-studies">comparative American studies</a>. </p> <p>At 91ֱ��, Steenburgh found community in the Experimental College (ExCo) program. In Spring 2021, they taught a Steel Pan ExCo. Through a private reading with Visiting Instructor in Environmental Studies Brad Melzer, they also created a Biomimicry ExCo.</p> <p>“I developed skills in preparing and delivering presentations, facilitating discussions, and leading classroom activities through teaching the Biomimicry ExCo. During that experience, I realized my desire for more teaching opportunities to prepare myself for a career in environmental education,” Steenburgh says. </p> <p>Teaching the Steel Pan ExCo also had a profound effect. “Two students came in to get extra help with learning the first song, and by the end of the session, they had learned it completely— and it was only the second time they had looked at it. After showing their parents their progress on FaceTime, I felt a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment in having been able to foster a space for these students to learn about and play an instrument that is culturally significant to them and their families. This experience was the first moment I really considered becoming an educator.”</p> <figure class="captioned-image"> <figcaption>Elise Steenburgh has learned Capoeira from Associate Professor Justin Emeka.<br> <br> Photo credit: Clarissa Heart '20</figcaption> </figure> <p>Steenburgh has been a teaching assistant for Capoeira courses taught by Associate Professor of Theater and Africana Studies <a href="/justin-emeka">Justin Emeka</a>, and they credit Emeka for deepening their understanding and respect for Afro-Brazilian diasporic traditions. </p> <p>During the Fulbright year, Steenburgh intends to practice Capoeira Angola, and they hope to get immersed in music. “I originally chose to go to Brazil for my gap year because I loved playing bossa nova. Instead of learning more bossa when I was there, I was exposed to the diversity of Brazilian music—sertanejo, funk, and MPB—which I broadcast on a WOBC radio show during my first few semesters at 91ֱ��. I used the radio show, titled “Tudo Bem” (all’s right), to feature a different genre of Brazilian music each week with history segments in both English and Portuguese.”</p> <p>Steenburgh has been a member of 91ֱ�� Student Cooperative Association (OSCA) since their first year, having worked as head cook and housing coordinator. They have worked as events coordinator and co-chair of the Multiracial Students Association; served as chair and treasurer of 91ֱ�� Capoeira Angola; and has been a member of the steel pan ensemble <a href="http://www.oberlinsteelpan.com/">91ֱ�� Steel</a>. </p> <p>This spring, Steenburgh has been doing research with Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and Comparative American Studies <a href="/jay-fiskio">Jay Fisko</a>. I’d like to think of this partnership as a collaboration of knowledge and how together, we hope to tell this beautifully woven story of a rich heritage through food.”</p><p>With approximately 23 percent of 91ֱ�� students identifying as Jewish, the college recognized there was a need to expand its dining options. Third-year student Jesse Noily believes the opening of Heritage Kitchen will allow him to be more connected with campus life and still adhere to his faith. </p><p>“As a part of 91ֱ��’s religious Jewish community, a certified kosher dining option feels like a huge step in helping me and students like me engage fully in campus life,” says Noily. “I look forward to seeing how this initiative will help to allow students from all backgrounds to engage in their Jewish identity and practice.” The opportunity for all Jewish students to eat together in one place is important to third-year Noah Plotkin, who was concerned about possibly having to change his housing and dining plans in order to keep kosher. “I was afraid I would have to move off campus, but the kosher kitchen certification allows me to continue to eat with my friends and community.”</p><p>Heritage Kitchen will meet the demand to provide a kosher menu to 400 students per week and will be available to all students through the college’s dining meal plan. While the menu will be designed for people who keep kosher, it will be open to every student and it also will meet the needs of many Muslim students.</p><p>“It is wonderful that 91ֱ�� has committed to meeting the dietary needs of all students, including those whose religious practice requires a specific standard of kashrut—adherence to the Jewish dietary laws, says Rabbi MeganDoherty, director of <a href="http://oberlinhillel.org">Hillel and Jewish Campus Life</a>. “I am so excited to have a certified kosher kitchen on campus that will operate on the same schedule as the dining halls and be open to all students. Though his optimism persisted through most of the summer, he ultimately decided to return to campus from his Colorado home only weeks before the fall semester began.</p> <p>Bamba’s experience—filled with hopes for a speedy return, coupled with months of second-guessing as the scope of the pandemic continually changed—was common among 91ֱ�� students. But most of them returned, either in fall semester or spring 2020, and they are making the most of a season of change.</p> <p>In order to remain on campus, 91ֱ�� students, faculty, and staff adhere to ObieSafe guidelines, a set of expectations established in conjunction with area health professionals including Cleveland Clinic. The academic calendar was reconfigured from the usual two terms to three in order to promote dedensification; faculty designed new courses; and staff rearranged community and living spaces to allow for social distancing.</p> <p>“We did that because it’s a labor of love,” 91ֱ�� President <a href="/node/48561">Carmen Twillie Ambar</a> said in a video to students right before move-in. “We did it because we have faith in you; faith in our students and how they will return to campus. We did it because <em>we know Obies</em>. We know your commitment to each other, we know your commitment to this campus, and we know your desire to be here is so strong and so vibrant that you will do what needs to be done.”</p> <p>So how have things actually gone?</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-right"> <figcaption>Alejandra Williams-Maneri</figcaption> </figure> <p>“I expected myself to feel pretty paranoid and afraid, but once we started getting very few positive tests, I felt very reassured,” says Alejandra Williams-Maneri ’22, a jazz piano and environmental studies major from Barre, Massachusetts.</p> <p>“I was actually able to have a college experience: I can still hang out with people in Tappan [Square]. I can still grab a coffee with someone and go for a socially distanced walk. I can still have rehearsal and play on my friends’ recitals. Obviously, things are very different, but I feel like I witnessed most people on campus become used to the way things were happening, and because of that collective community decision, things felt normal even though they were very much not.”</p> <p>A fourth-year student, Williams-Maneri had the advantage of an established community amid the pandemic; younger students, like those who make up the Orb Quartet chamber ensemble, faced the added challenge of making new connections at a time when connecting hasn't been easy.</p> <p>“Before I got to 91ֱ��, I had low expectations,” says Orb member Caroline Cornell ’24, a violin performance major from Naples, Florida. “It was so much better than what I thought it would be; it sort of felt almost normal because everyone was going through very similar experiences.”</p> <p>“I was expecting more limitations,” says Isabel Aronin ’24, a viola performance major from Bethesda, Maryland. “With the quartet, I was expecting it to be very awkward, playing with distance—but it ended up being just fine.”</p> <p>Not surprisingly, the desire for community—in any form—is a recurring theme. “It had been months since I had played in a room with anyone else,” says Aaron Lieberman ’25, a cello performance and classical composition major from Baltimore. “91ֱ�� was different than a normal chamber music experience, but it was better than no chamber music at all.”</p> <div class="obj-center"> <figure class="captioned-image"> <figcaption>The Orb Quartet practiced in opposite corners for weeks before facing inward in advance of their fall ChamberFest performance.</figcaption> </figure> </div> <p>Opportunities to play with top ensembles as an undergraduate draw many students to 91ֱ��. That’s still the case, of course, even if ensemble logistics have looked a little different this year.</p> <p>“At one of the summer camps I did, we had this exercise called Four Corners,” says the Orb Quartet’s Amina Knapp ’24, a violin performance major from Shoreview, Minnesota. “We all turned our backs to each other and played in the four corners of the room. It’s meant to sharpen our listening skills and ensemble playing: <em>How do you collaborate when you can’t see each other?</em>”</p> <p>Throughout the semester, the quartet used Four Corners to stay socially distant while training their ears. They finally turned around in time for their ChamberFest performance just before winter break.</p> <p>In the jazz department, where ensemble playing is an essential component, students took to making music in unusual spaces.</p> <p>“There were some jam sessions and rehearsals on the roof of the <a href="/node/3506">Kohl Building</a>,” Williams-Maneri recalls. “That was kind of cool; I had a rehearsal there, and some high school kids just happened to walk up the stairs. They were sitting socially distanced and just listening to us, which was nice. That was a community moment that definitely wouldn't have happened before.”</p> <p>In addition to jam sessions, the department also presents Jazz Forum, a weekly concert that allows ensembles to hone their chops in front of their peers and professors. An 91ֱ�� tradition, Forum normally happens at midday on Fridays at the Cat in the Cream, 91ֱ��’s student-run coffeehouse. In the fall, the department facilitated outdoor Forums at the Tappan Square bandstand, and Noah Sherman ’22, a jazz percussion performance major, organized a weekly jam session to raise money for the Black Trans Travel Fund.</p> <p>“That was amazing,” says Williams-Maneri. “I got to meet a lot of underclassmen that way, and I definitely wouldn't have had those connections if it hadn’t been for Forum and the jams.”</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-right"> <figcaption>Morgan Wolfe</figcaption> </figure> <p>For Morgan Wolfe ’23, a classical voice major studying from her home in Suffern, New York, the experience of collaboration and performance was entirely different. In an act of true COVID creativity, when Wolfe’s Opera Theater course presented a cabaret of arias and monologues, she dragged her cat tree into her kitchen, perched her laptop on the highest level, and performed there.</p> <p>“I just missed acting so much, I didn’t care where I was as long as I got to act and perform,” she says. “Being online took some of the nervousness out for me. Of course, everyone is watching me do it, but in person their eyes would be on me, and then I’d get so nervous!”</p> <p>Despite the distance, Wolfe was able to grow as an artist and to connect with her classmates.</p> <p>“Everyone in my class was so sweet. We were all so kind to each other: constant praise, constant affirmations. It was just nice to participate in that class, online or in person. It was just refreshing to act and perform again.”</p> <h5>Time to Go the Distance</h5> <p>Thus far, 91ֱ��’s stellar results from fall—incredibly low COVID-test positivity rates and near-universal adherence to ObieSafe guidelines—have carried over into spring, as warmer weather begins to blend with an optimism born of decreasing infection rates and increased access to vaccines. In the coming weeks, 91ֱ�� students will have the opportunity to be vaccinated on campus, a step that brings the community another crucial step closer to the reality of a normal fall semester—and even a <em>more normal </em>summer term before that.</p> <p>In recent days, the ObieSafe motto for everyone at 91ֱ�� has become “Go the Distance”: Continue to do what it takes to maintain our extraordinary results, so that we can realize that normal future sooner than later.</p> <p>So what now? How can students best prepare for the rest of spring and summer? The experts share their advice.</p> <p>Wolfe: “I think we really have to get creative and reach out if we need help. When you feel isolated, it’s hard to reach out for help from others, because you get so in your own head. It’s okay to ask people for help! This is a tough time, and we need to stick together.”</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-right"> <figcaption>Malcolm Bamba</figcaption> </figure> <p>Bamba: “Have a good system of self-care and organization. Not just academically, but also in organizing your life: when you wake up, when you do certain tasks, when you talk to people on the phone, or even seeing people in Tappan. And reach out to your professors if you need help. We were getting to the end of the semester, and I reached out to my professors and was like ‘Hey, I’m struggling, could I get some extra time? And they were like ‘Sure, of course.’”</p> <p>Lieberman: “There are a lot of things you can’t do, but there are a lot of things that we’ve recently started doing that are really beneficial. We might never have done the whole Four Corners exercise if we didn't have to stay socially distant.”</p> <p>Williams-Maneri: “Be intentional about connecting with people. It’s easy to just stay isolated, but if you can really find time and to connect with people in a safe and comfortable way, that’s really the main thing.”</p> <p>Across the board, students reflected surprise at the sense of routine and regularity they came to feel with 91ֱ��’s COVID-19 safety guidelines.</p> <p>“It was surprising how normal things would feel,” Williams-Maneri reflects. “I got super-used to wearing a mask and going through all these protocols. It felt like ‘Oh yeah, I’m at college, doing college things, and I’m still feeling community.’”</p> <p>“Socially it was really good,” Bamba adds. “91ֱ��’s small, and we had a really safe protocol in place. I think I was able to have a good social life, a lot of opportunities to see people consistently, so in that way, it felt like a really good semester.”</p> <p>“As a remote student, I was so surprised by how it felt like we were all in the same room, even though we were on Zoom,” Wolfe says. “Being apart, being so distanced, kind of made us tighter as a family, because we’re all going through this—as artists, as musicians, as people. We’re all feeling this way, and in my remote courses, that kind of united us. Whenever we return to in-person classes, we can all say that we felt the burnout, we’ve been through this, and we came out even stronger.”</p> <p><em>Charlotte Maskelony is a fourth-year voice performance major from Arlington, Virginia.
