Run by the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), the STRONG Scholars Program provides first-year students with specialized mentoring and resources to help them adapt to and thrive in their STEM journey. As her first research endeavor, Shende spent her first-year winter term in a computational astrophysics lab with Professor Jillian Scudder.

Soon after, Shende earned a research role with XR Access, a Cornell Tech initiative that aims to make virtual reality programs more accessible for people with disabilities. There, she found a deeper sense of purpose in the human impact of her work.

Shende continued her journey as a computer science researcher during her second year, where she clarified her interest in making technologies such as AI more accessible across sectors. One of her projects was designing a generative AI program to make visual art more accessible to blind and low vision (BLV) users, which led her to publish a paper and present at the 2024 AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

At 91ֱ, where she’s majoring in computer science and mathematics, Shende is active in the undergraduate research community. She joined BRANCHES as a community leader, helping to create inclusive programming and support networks for STEM students. She later became a research ambassador for OUR, guiding students as they entered the undergraduate research space.

Shende also utilized resources from the Career Exploration and Development (CED) office to expand her understanding of technology from policy and economic viewpoints. She worked with the U.S. State Department’s Diplomacy Lab and served as a student delegate to the Athens Democracy Forum, examining AI and other technologies from the perspective of governance and public policy.

In addition, Shende volunteers at the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio, where she supports adult learners navigating barriers such as childcare and technology access. “I am building a provider–service database and prototyping a web platform and Large Language Model-based assistant that guides learners toward appropriate programs and enables smoother, more accountable handoffs.”

Shende was selected as a Goldwater Scholar and spent last summer at the MIT Summer Research Program in the Media Lab. “Altogether, my CELA experiences have grounded my academic journey in purpose, equity, and community. They shaped the researcher I am now and the one I hope to become as I move into graduate study and work at the intersection of technology, policy, and society.”

Shende is a nominee for the CELA Award, recognizing outstanding engagement and achievement in connecting academic pursuits with experiential learning.

Computer science and math major Tanisha Shende ’26 combines high-level AI research with global policy to create equitable technology.

News Story

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 12:00

By Kate Martin ’26

Engaged Liberal Arts

Undergraduate Research

Bonner Center

Fellowships

Computer Science

Mathematics

Computer Science

Mathematics

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones ’97

0
Mon, 23 Mar 2026 17:36:24 +0000 kviancou 773267 at Finding Confidence and Community Through 91ֱ’s Bonner Scholars Program /news/finding-confidence-and-community-through-oberlins-bonner-scholars-program Finding Confidence and Community Through 91ֱ’s Bonner Scholars Program kviancou Mon, 03/23/2026 - 13:05

Erica Vu ’26 credits the Bonner Scholars Program within the Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA) with helping her find her confidence, her community, and her sense of purpose at 91ֱ.

As a Bonner Scholar, Vu has taken on a wide range of volunteer projects and leadership roles while at 91ֱ. Since her first semester, she has committed much of her time to the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra (NOYO). There, she learned the behind-the-scenes logistics of orchestral performances and eventually took on a new role as a production assistant. “While it was a lot of work, I saw that I have the potential to be a leader and that I am a valued asset to my work environment,” she says.

Vu also spent a summer working as a camp counselor at the Teen Action Support Center in Northwest Arkansas. “I worked with a team of social work graduate students to provide a free summer program for teens ages 13-17 within the probation system, allowing them to gain new, enriching experiences,” she says. 91ֱ’s Career Exploration and Development (CED) office helped her fine-tune her resume, draft a cover letter, and prepare for her interview as she pursued this role.

Seeking an opportunity beyond the Bonner Program, Vu applied for funding through CED’s Internship+ Program to volunteer with 91ֱ’s Legion Garden. Additional support from the Jerome Davis Research Award helped fund her compensation and other expenses.

After 91ֱ, Liu hopes to pursue a PhD in sociology to continue her research and teach at a university. “CELA’s support and resources have greatly guided me and shaped my undergraduate trajectory,” she says. “Without CELA’s guidance, I would have never realized that I wanted to pursue a career in academia.”

Liu is a nominee for the CELA Award, recognizing outstanding engagement and achievement in connecting academic pursuits with experiential learning.

Through Mellon Mays research, global study, and funded summer programs, Katelyn Liu ’26 is connecting sociology and identity.

News Story

Sun, 03/22/2026 - 12:00

By Kate Martin ’26

Engaged Liberal Arts

Undergraduate Research

Study Away

Sociology

Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones ’97

0
Mon, 23 Mar 2026 17:52:57 +0000 kviancou 773268 at How CELA and CLEAR Empower Biochemistry Research /news/how-cela-and-clear-empower-biochemistry-research How CELA and CLEAR Empower Biochemistry Research kviancou Mon, 03/23/2026 - 11:24

The Center for Engaged Liberal Arts (CELA) fosters a community where students connect academic learning with real-world application. Now, beginning in summer 2025, the program will offer exciting new opportunities. The original idea for the program stemmed from Professor Emeritus of Biology Yolanda Cruz, who had the desire to bring together a community of researchers over the summer. Over the past years, OSRI has evolved into an immersive, intensive, faculty-mentored research experience—and that research spans across many disciplines.

The program lasts eight weeks, and can look different ways for each student, depending on the style of their project. They might be in a research lab, working on faculty research. Or, they could be working on their own research project, but still being guided by a faculty member. Each week, all students come together for workshops about research themes, professional development, and more. At the end of the program, OSRI hosts a research symposium where students can present their work and hear about others’ projects.

“It's a super supportive community and very interdisciplinary. It's an exciting space to learn from one another, and to learn to communicate your research to folks across different disciplines,” says Abby Aresty, interim director of Inclusive Excellence in STEM Pedagogy and Undergraduate Research.

OSRI is not just limited to STEM subjects, which is what one often associates with the concept of research. Rather, it has long had a commitment to supporting a diversity of projects across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Projects can range anywhere from critically evaluating AI-produced survey content to investigating and problematizing the historically white racial frame of music theory and classical music.

The integral aspect of the updated OSRI experience is a new collaboration with Career Exploration & Development (CED). This partnership will allow rising third- and fourth-year students to apply for an OSRI Fellowship for on-campus research; if their application is successful, Internship+ funds will be allocated to support their OSRI experience. What this means is that 91ֱ is increasing the funding available for students to participate in summer research on campus. This, in turn, increases not only the general capacity of the program, but the ability to support students at a wider variety of stages in their research.

“Some may be starting out as an assistant on a research project,” Aresty explains. “Other people may be working towards their honors project, or thinking about applying for Research Fulbright. We're making the programming more targeted and flexible. We will have opportunities for research foundations workshops for folks who are earlier in their journey, but we will also have programming and space for advanced students to come together to learn from one another. We are designing the program in a way that is conducive to everybody's individual research journey.”

Research at 91ֱ is a unique and special experience, set apart from others for a few reasons. Specifically, I hope to explore how the Third Reich misappropriated the Germania to generate Hitler’s idea of “the master race,” and how this corrupted reading continues to influence digital age hate speech and white supremacy in online chat rooms and forums.

By building on Christopher Krebs’ work in A Most Dangerous Book, which outlines how the Third Reich created a lasting doctrine of white supremacy, my research aims to show that the white supremacist doctrine created by the Third Reich using the Germania continues to manifest in hate speech today, coming full circle as hate groups and their leaders misappropriate Roman symbolism and literature to further messages of hate.

What sort of mentorship have your 91ֱ faculty mentors, Professor of Classics Chris Trinacty and Nathan A. Aside from reading countless drafts of fellowship statements and refining my thesis, both have played a seminal role in cultivating my love for classics.

Professor Trinacty’s Latin 101 class was my first class at 91ֱ as a first year, and both have advised me academically and personally during my time at college. As an inhabitant of the classics library, I enjoy impromptu translation at the board and morning chats in the office with my professors.

The guidance I receive from my mentors, often on a daily basis, encouraged me to pursue this kind of fellowship, but it also spurs me to be the best student I can be every day. They have taught me that consistent practice and hard work adds up and makes opportunities like this fellowship possible.

(l-r) Professor of Classics Chris Trinacty, Ava Harvey '26 and Nathan A. The project is supported by the Michigan State University Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures and the National Science Foundation and was initially begun during COVID-19 to track speech tendencies of Michigan residents during quarantine. Since then, it has evolved into a successful initiative to engage undergraduates in linguistics and linguistic research.

As a lead research assistant on the MI Diaries Project, I taught Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)-assisted transcription and analysis to project participants, who are both undergraduate and doctoral students. I have also worked both as a student researcher and as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) researcher on the project. From May through July 2023, I onboarded the project's NSF REU cohort, teaching transcription and analysis. This experience will support my research at the University of Chicago this summer because the misappropriation of classical texts occurs mainly in online settings dedicated to hate speech and white supremacy.

In order to find patterns of misappropriation, it is essential to consider the effects shared language has on community. The language of hate speech has patterns, just as any other language does, and it will be critical to map these patterns before I am able to draw connections between online conversations and the ancient sources they reference. My research background in sociolinguistics and linguistics will be key to identifying these patterns and ultimately showing how classical texts have become embroiled in online hate speech.

Researching both classics and linguistics has impacted my career goals. As someone who is interested in pursuing academia, building strong research and writing skills during undergrad is an important step toward graduate school. The opportunity to teach students from all walks of life as a research assistant at Michigan State taught me skills that will support me on this path, including time management, organization, project management, data collection, and analysis. I am excited to continue this journey by doing research in my own field this summer.

What is your favorite thing about doing research?
I find that the research process is often as rewarding as its results. Exploring new concepts and piecing together a unique understanding of concepts that are thousands of years old in the classics world is an exciting process that lets you discover new lenses for viewing the past.

What’s the best advice you’ve received from your 91ֱ faculty mentors?
“Don’t worry, it’s just Greek,” from professor Ormand, or “Practice your paradigms” from professor Trinacty.

Activities in which you were involved at 91ֱ: During the 2022-2023 school year, I was a peer career advisor in Law and Public Policy and a member on the Student Honor Committee, and during the fall 2023 semester I worked in the Office of Undergraduate Research as a Research Ambassador.

Connect with Fellowships & Awards to learn more about the fellowships and awards opportunities available to students.

The Greek and Latin double major will present research findings at two separate symposiums.

News Story

Thu, 08/08/2024 - 12:00

Office of Communications

Awards and Honors

Undergraduate Research

Classics

Professor of Classics Chris Trinacty and Ava Harvey '26.

Yes

Yes (Individual Images)

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones '97

Wed, 31 Jul 2024 21:12:01 +0000 azaleski 476360 at
