It gives our students new ways to signal the depth of their scientific training. For example, in all of the eligible majors, undergraduates routinely co-author with their faculty mentors in scholarly peer-reviewed scientific journals.”

Kamitsuka noted that several programs outside traditional STEM areas—such as economics, business, and psychology—also qualify for the BS. “That reflects how today’s problems are solved,” he says. “Understanding markets, managing complex organizations, and studying human behavior all require the same analytical and evidence-based thinking we teach in the natural sciences. The BS degree captures that spirit of interdisciplinary inquiry grounded in the liberal arts tradition that is at the heart of an 91ֱ education.

The new degree will also broaden 91ֱ’s appeal to prospective students. Across U.S. higher education, more than half of all international students pursue degrees in STEM or science-related fields—a trend that makes 91ֱ’s new BS degree especially attractive to global applicants.

For people like Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Jason Belitsky, the degree represents a way to better acknowledge the work many students already do.

“Our students in chemistry, physics, biology, and related disciplines already engage in extensive lab work, data analysis, and scientific problem-solving that meet the expectations of a Bachelor of Science education,” Belitsky says. “This new degree formally recognizes that rigor and affirms the quality and breadth of scientific preparation our students bring to graduate study and professional work.”

Belitsky emphasizes that the BS option doesn’t change 91ֱ’s approach to teaching—it enhances it. “What’s exciting is that students will be able to show both sides of their education: deep technical and analytical expertise, and the creativity and communication skills that come from a liberal arts environment.”

The degree was endorsed by the college’s Educational Plans and Policies Committee earlier this year and approved by the College Faculty. The Bachelor of Science will be available to students beginning in fall 2026.

How to Qualify for the BS Degree

To earn a Bachelor of Science at 91ֱ, students must:

Declare at least one major from the list of BS-eligible programs.

Notify the Office of the Registrar of their intention to convert their Bachelor of Arts degree to a Bachelor of Science.

Complete at least 16 full courses designated as Natural Science and Mathematics.

Students who meet the criteria may choose to graduate with either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science—but not both.

The new degree option expands academic pathways in the sciences, social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields.

News Story

Thu, 10/16/2025 - 12:00

Communications Staff

91ֱ will begin offering a Bachelor of Science degree option to students in the College of Arts and Sciences, expanding pathways in the natural sciences, social sciences, and emerging interdisciplinary fields. The major was created in response to longtime student interest; finance is one of the top fields pursued by 91ֱ graduates.

Building on Excellence

“Our new Financial Economics major builds on what we have already been doing well in the Economics Department,” says the program’s chair, Associate Professor of Economics and Environmental Studies Paul Brehm. “It allows students to develop an even deeper understanding of financial markets and fully demonstrate this excellence on the job market.”

The Financial Economics major, for which the first students were admitted in fall 2024, goes beyond the existing Finance minor, offering deeper specialization for students pursuing finance careers. Notable features include:

Senior-year seminars focused on students’ original research

Hands-on experience with industry-standard software and data

Integration of financial and economic theory with practical applications

Focus on quantitative skills and analytical training

Graduates will be equipped to:

Evaluate the importance of ethics and corporate governance

Analyze government policy impacts on financial markets

Apply critical thinking to complex financial challenges

Demonstrate proficiency in cutting-edge industry-relevant tools and analysis

Real-World Impact

At 91ֱ, Financial Economics majors go beyond the classroom, combining their studies with hands-on opportunities to manage real-world investments as members of the 91ֱ Finance Club (OFC).

Student investment teams manage a diverse portfolio of publicly traded equities and fixed-income securities currently valued at approximately $400,000, gaining practical experience in investment strategies and understanding market dynamics. OFC donates 3 percent of its assets under management back to the college to be used for need-based scholarships.

“Our students are investing with real money in a way that matters,” says Associate Professor of Financial Economics Udara Peiris. “This is a real differentiator for our program, and particularly for those aiming to make their mark as finance professionals.”

Adds Department Chair Brehm: “The 91ֱ Finance Club helps students prepare for the job market. They’re making the same types of decisions that they’ll be making on Wall Street and elsewhere.”

Other highlights of OFC membership include:

Career development featuring résumé preparation, mock interviews, and personalized mentorship.

A speaker series that connects OFC members to Wall Street professionals and alumni, expanding professional networks and gaining insights from industry leaders.

The program’s effectiveness is already evident, with students receiving job offers from leading firms including BlackRock, Fidelity, UBS, and Goldman Sachs.

“With academic rigor, modern training methods, and strong industry connections, the Financial Economics major provides a pathway for the next generation of Obies to make their impact and be a force for good in the financial sector as well as in policy,” says Peiris.

For more information, visit the Financial Economics website.

New program builds on established successes, positions graduates for high-impact careers.

News Story

Thu, 12/12/2024 - 12:00

Office of Communications

College of Arts and Sciences

Financial Economics

M. It showed me firsthand how financial resources could uplift communities," Mayanka recalls. This early exposure sparked his dream of working in investment banking, where he could help large corporations navigate complex transactions and provide strategic advice to create value not only for the firm but also for the broader economy.

Mayanka’s journey at 91ֱ College solidified his path toward this goal. As a member of the 91ֱ Finance Club, he progressed through various leadership roles, honing his business analysis, financial modeling, and investment research skills. "The Finance Club was where I really started to build my foundation. Leading investment pitches and conducting market analysis helped me realize how much I enjoyed the work," he says. These experiences, coupled with classes like Principles of Finance with M. Udara Peiris and Money and Banking with John Duca, laid the groundwork for his deeper exploration into finance.

Mayanka’s winter term in Nepal spent working in private equity deepened his understanding of the industry, as did his internships at EY-Parthenon and Dolma Impact Fund. At EY-Parthenon, he contributed to a live sell-side deal, gaining hands-on experience in strategy and transaction advisory. At Dolma Impact Fund, he focused on impact investing through private equity, sharpening his analytical skills and enhancing his understanding of how private equity firms drive value through sustainable investments.

"Both experiences showed me the potential of private equity to create meaningful change, especially when it’s tied to ESG [Environmental, Social, and Governance] goals," Mayanka explains. 91ֱ’s unique opportunities also played a critical role in his educational development. As an Ashby Business Scholar, he engaged with alumni and gained invaluable insights into the world of business and finance. His private reading in financial modeling with Professor Peiris and his study abroad at Oxford – where he participated in and won a Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) competition – further built his confidence and technical expertise.

"Winning that M&A competition at Oxford was a turning point. It gave me the confidence that I could thrive in this field," he reflects. 91ֱ’s resources, including access to the Bloomberg Terminal and The Wall Street Journal, allowed him to follow the markets closely, refine his investment theses, and complete the Bloomberg Market Concepts certification.

Mayanka’s summer internship at Bank of America in Debt Capital Markets gave him hands-on exposure to macroeconomic drivers like inflation and interest rates, reinforcing the connection between his economics coursework and practical finance.

"That internship was where everything I had learned came together,” he says. “Understanding the economy’s key drivers and seeing them play out in real-time in the markets was invaluable.” Through all these experiences, 91ֱ helped him bridge the gap between theory and practice, offering the platform and resources to turn his dream into reality.

As a member of the first cohort of 91ֱ’s new financial economics major, Mayanka is grateful for the path he carved for himself. He credits 91ֱ’s blend of economics and finance with providing him the foundation necessary for his future career. "91ֱ gave me the freedom to find my way in finance, and now, with the new financial economics major, I’m excited for future students to have a more structured path."

Starting as an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs, Mayanka sees his 91ֱ journey as a testament to how ambition, determination, and the right support can achieve even the biggest dreams.

Ready to make an impact with your education and career? In the spring of her sophomore year, she enrolled in Principles of Finance, which explored the intersection of quantitative analysis and the tactical application of social science.

Her involvement in the 91ֱ Finance Club introduced Samantha to the principles of investing firsthand, which was a catalyst for exploring a career in business and finance through 91ֱ’s Ashby Business Scholars Program. The Ashby Business Program provides students access to additional finance-focused resources and connects them with a broad network of Obies working in the industry.

Through the Ashby Program, she met alums working in various fields across the Northeast and Cleveland, including a private equity firm in New York, The Riverside Company. In the summer of her junior year, Samantha interned as an analyst for Riverside’s growth equity and debt fund, Riverside Acceleration Capital (RAC). RAC focuses on high-growth, software-as-a-service B2B companies. During her internship, she was able to apply the quantitative, research, and problem-solving skills that she developed in the classroom. Samantha enjoyed the collaborative and results-oriented environment and is excited to return to RAC as a full-time analyst following graduation.

Reflecting on her journey, Samantha says, "All of my experiences at 91ֱ have led to this opportunity. The liberal arts thinking, practical finance experience, and the powerful Ashby business network truly opened the door for my position at Riverside."

Ready to make an impact with your education and career? A political science major with an integrative concentration in education studies, Silverman applies the critical thinking and problem-solving skills she honed at 91ֱ to her work as a global markets senior analyst. She recently shared how her background in political theory shaped her career path in finance and contributed to her early success in a competitive field.

How has your political science degree contributed to your work at Goldman Sachs?

Although my role at Goldman Sachs differs from my political science major, my education from 91ֱ has been invaluable. The diverse curriculum, extending beyond politics to the core subjects, taught me to efficiently learn and adapt to new challenges. This skill set has been crucial at Goldman, where I regularly encounter unfamiliar problems. Unrelated to my politics degree, my experience dissecting a rat in Biology 101 prepared me not to fear any challenge—even in the finance world.

Can you share how your extracurricular activities at 91ֱ impacted your professional development?

My time in Harkness co-op was instrumental in preparing me for Goldman Sachs. As a head cook for two years, I developed skills in multitasking, working under pressure, and leading a team. The culture of debate in the co-op’s governance taught me to confidently advocate for my ideas. I am truly grateful for this experience, as it significantly contributed to my career success.

What advice would you give 91ֱ students looking to enter competitive fields?

Make sure you leverage 91ֱ’s unique qualities, such as its passionate professors and quirky clubs, to make your job applications stand out. Building relationships with professors in your major is key. Take their classes, participate in the classroom, and go to office hours. 91ֱ’s small community allows for these meaningful connections, which can be pivotal in obtaining strong references and recommendations. Also, don't hesitate to reach out to alumni in your desired field. Most are more than willing to help with the application process.

Were there any mentors at 91ֱ who were crucial to your professional growth?

Eve Sandberg, my foreign policy professor, gave really great insights in her class as to what the expectations and realities are of working in fast-paced, high-stakes foreign policy fields. I found her advice to be transferable to my career now. My professor Joshua Freedman helped me build confidence in my abilities when I was in his seminar and worked as his research assistant. There are too many others to name, but all my professors have had an impact on my growth in one way or another.

What is your fondest memory from your time at 91ֱ?

My fondest memory is of taking a samba class during a summer semester. When the weather was nice, we went out to dance in Tappan Square! It was not just a class, but a place where I formed lasting friendships and also gained an appreciation for 91ֱ’s beauty in the summer. It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.

Global Market Senior Analyst Anna Silverman ’22 Shares How 91ֱ Helped Shape Her Career Path

News Story

Thu, 05/16/2024 - 12:00

Communications Staff

After 91ֱ

Co-op

Student Organizations

Biology

Financial Economics

Dance

Politics

Joshua Freedman

Biology

Financial Economics

Dance

Politics

Anna Silverman

Off

false

Courtesy of Silverman

Thu, 16 May 2024 19:37:29 +0000 ygay 472127 at
