I am completely at ease speaking German and English, but French is still a problem,” confesses Jungk, who is this year’s <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german/writer-residence">Max Kade German Writer in Residence</a>. If the name sounds familiar to those with knowledge of institutional history, it’s because this is Jungk’s third residency teaching German literature to 91ֱ students. Since the college began the residency in 1968, Jungk is the only author to be chosen more than once. His most recent selection was in 2018.</p> <p>So when he was asked to return a third time, he had some reservations. He didn’t want to take the opportunity away from other writers, and the offer came with a twist: he was asked to teach a screenwriting workshop to fill in for Professor of Cinema Studies <a href="/geoff-pingree">Geoff Pingree</a> during his sabbatical.&nbsp;</p> <p>“This time is much different because in addition to teaching German literature, I am preparing for the workshop and meeting with very talented young people who mainly come from the creative writing program. There is less time to work on my next novel, but I’m not complaining—it’s been fun,” says Jungk, whose accomplishments as a writer and screenwriter include 12 books and five documentaries.&nbsp;</p> <p>His 2016 documentary <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5869550/"><em>Tracking Edith</em></a> tells the story of a great aunt, Edith Tudor-Heart. It was well known in Jungk’s family that Tudor-Heart was a talented photographer, but it wasn’t until 20 years after her death that Jungk learned she had lived a double life as a KGB agent who&nbsp; helped create the Cambridge Five, the Soviet Union’s most successful spy ring in the United Kingdom.</p> <p>Assistant Professor of German <a href="/gabriel-cooper">Gabriel Cooper</a> has benefited from Jungk’s tutelage both as a professor and as an 91ֱ alumnus. He first met Jungk in fall 2003, when he was a student in the German 315 Writer-in-Residence seminar.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I was already impressed by his writing back then, and when I think about how we students would write for him each week in German—as learners of that language—it seems impossibly far-fetched that he would be interested in us and our lived experiences. But he really was interested, and that was how we got into conversations, inside and outside of class, about everything from language and belonging, to family, home, and American life and culture.”</p> <p>Cooper stayed in touch with Jungk long after his studies at 91ֱ. In spring 2017, he invited Jungk back to 91ֱ for a weeklong symposium he organized on Jungk’s writing and films. Cooper also taught a module course that semester about Jungk’s work “as a way to give back to 91ֱ what 91ֱ had given to me as part of my education in German language and literature.”&nbsp;</p> <p>In choosing authors to fill the Max Kade residency, the German department considers individuals who will engage well with students and are established, working writers in German.</p> <p>“Peter Stephan Jungk is a perfect fit not just because of his accomplishments, but also what he can offer students in the Writer-in-Residence seminar as a result,” says Cooper. “Peter is very approachable, insatiably curious, generous, and open with students, especially regarding his life and his art. From what students have reported, and from my own experience, I know that Peter welcomes students to share what they think about his writing, even their most critical reactions, since he relishes that exchange with readers. This sets him apart from many other authors, and it also speaks to why he has been such a good fit for the program.”&nbsp;</p> <p>As is the tradition with the Max Kade residency, <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/writing_lives_a_conversation_and_reading_with_peter_stephan_jungk">Jungk will give a public reading</a> in English from his biographical and autobiographical writings. The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in Kade House. Cooper will moderate a conversation, and a Q&amp;A will follow.</p> <p>Jungk says it serves him well to be immersed with young talent who can show him a different world. And although the landscape of 91ֱ is vastly different from Austria or Switzerland, he continues to find inspiration here.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I’m very interested in my students’ aspirations. I know it’s a cliche, but teaching is learning.”</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2022-04-19T12:00:00Z">Tue, 04/19/2022 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Amanda Nagy</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2390">Events</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2363">Academics &amp; Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2391">Languages &amp; Literatures</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2377">Arts &amp; Humanities</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25371">German</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german" hreflang="und">German Language and Literatures</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/cinema-studies" hreflang="und">Cinema and Media</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">German author and documentary filmmaker Peter Stephan Jungk is a returning Max Kade Writer in Residence.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Tanya Rosen-Jones '97</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/images-2022/peterjungk-news.jpg?itok=z7Qq1LHa" width="760" height="570" alt="Peter Jungk."> </div> Tue, 19 Apr 2022 15:51:24 +0000 anagy 396256 at CBYX Fellowship Winner Combines a Love of Language with Vocal Performance /news/cbyx-fellowship-winner-combines-love-language-vocal-performance <span>CBYX Fellowship Winner Combines a Love of Language with Vocal Performance</span> <span><span>ygay</span></span> <span><time datetime="2021-06-30T16:34:09-04:00" title="Wednesday, June 30, 2021 - 16:34">Wed, 06/30/2021 - 16:34</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>As a fellowship recipient in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals program, Charlotte Maskelony ’21, a classical vocal performance major, will spend the year studying, interning, and living with hosts in Germany.</p> <p>The <a href="https://culturalvistas.org/programs/abroad/congress-bundestag-youth-exchange-young-professionals/" target="_blank">Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals</a> (CBYX) is a fellowship funded by the German Bundestag federal parliament and U.S. Department of State. The program provides 75 American and 75 German young professionals the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s countries. The program consists of three phases: two months of intensive German language training; one semester of classes in one’s academic or career field at a university, technical, or professional school; and a three-month internship in one’s career field.</p> <p>Maskelony became interested in the German language when she realized how significant it was to opera. Over time she grew to love the language as a way to gain a better understanding of world history and international politics.</p> <p>Although Maskelony will not know where her internship will take place until she arrives in Germany later this month, she admits it would be a dream to intern with an opera company focused on new opera and a more equitable arts industry. Particularly since a lot of her work, both at 91ֱ and with the Glimmerglass Festival, has shown her how crucial supporting new work and strengthening equity, diversity, and inclusion practices are to the growth of the arts.&nbsp;</p> <p>Before enrolling at <a href="/conservatory" target="_blank">91ֱ Conservatory</a>, Maskelony studied German language for two&nbsp;years, and was encouraged to take intermediate courses by <a href="/steven-huff" target="_blank">Professor of German Steven Huff</a> once she arrived on campus. She credits Huff for helping her to foster a strong love for German literature, which led to a minor in German.&nbsp;</p> <p>Throughout her time at 91ֱ, Maskelony has also applied her love of German literature and culture in a number of ways. She was selected for the National German Honors Society and served as resident assistant for the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german/german-house" target="_blank">Max Kade German House</a>. Last January, she designed the Swedish Art Song Intensive, a one-month study of Swedish language and song. Her most recent project was associate-directing 91ֱ’s debut remote opera, a double bill of <em>La voix humaine</em> and <em>The Telephone</em>, and producing an in-person, COVID-safe outdoor screening of the show.</p> <p>“The CBYX program offers an incredible opportunity to build international relationships that will help create a more connected arts industry and world,” says Maskelony. “The desire to connect with authentic German culture, after living with it at 91ֱ, was a central reason I applied for CBYX. Culture in the United States has so much to learn from Germany, and I hope there are American cultural values—like the ability to reinvent yourself—that I can share in Germany.”&nbsp;</p> <p>After completing the CBYX fellowship and spending a few years working in the industry, Maskelony plans to earn a master’s degree in libretto writing, directing, or both.</p> <p>“It would be a privilege to create a career writing libretti, directing opera, and running a new opera incubator. When I was younger, I was really fortunate to attend performing arts summer programs like Brevard and Tanglewood Music Center, Maskelony says. “I would love to start my opera incubator as a summer program, and grow it to a year-long program; a sort of mecca for composer and librettist teams to workshop their pieces. Ultimately connecting them with opera houses who will put on not just a premiere, but repeated productions of the show. Of course, I’d also love to direct those new works. And write them. So there’s a lot to do.”</p> <p>But one of Maskelony’s bigger career goals is to work toward gender equity in opera.&nbsp;“In my German senior seminar this year,” she says, “we studied playwright Bertolt Brecht, and read <em>Der kaukasische Kreidekreis</em> (<em>The Caucausian Chalk Circle</em>), one of his most famous plays.&nbsp;</p> <p>“As I was reading the piece, I noticed a small note on the inside cover page—‘Ruth Berlau, Mitarbeiter (collaborator).’ As it turns out, she was a Danish actress, writer, and director who collaborated on Brecht’s work for over 20 years, but remains largely uncredited. I’m writing a libretto about her for my final, to add one more grain of sand to a more accurate history. A Gymnasium, she explains, has a more academic and higher education focus versus a vocational school.</p> <p>A German and politics major, Scholl’s love for the German language began in the seventh grade, when she chose to learn German over French to set herself apart from her friends. After winning a <a href="/news/hannah-scholl-21-awarded-delta-phi-alpha-scholarship">German National Honors Society study away scholarship</a> and then having to leave her study away program in Munich after fewer than two weeks there, Scholl was eager to find a way to return to a German-speaking country, which motivated her to apply for both the Fulbright Germany English Teaching Assistantship and the USTA Austria fellowship.</p> <p>“It was definitely quite bittersweet to have to decide between the Fulbright ETA in Germany and the USTA program. While I know that both programs are amazing, I chose the USTA program partly because I really liked my placement in Villach. I also liked that this program provides the potential opportunity of renewing my teaching contract for a second year. I am committed to returning to Germany at some point, and I figure it would be valuable to broaden my international perspective and learn more about Austrian culture, which I am not as familiar with,” Scholl says.</p> <p>With Austria being new territory for Scholl, she is excited to learn more about the education system and the local sustainability practices. She also expects to hone her language skills, develop a more international perspective, and be a cultural ambassador from the U.S. during a time of recent political turmoil.</p> <p>At 91ֱ, Scholl has been a resident of German House for three years and a frequent German table participant; she has also gained teaching experience by working as an America Reads tutor at the Boys and Girls Club in 91ֱ and as a German tutor. Her past visits abroad as a student include the 91ֱ in Italy summer opera program in Arezzo, and <a href="/news/third-year-hannah-scholl-represents-oberlin-athens-democracy-forum">representing 91ֱ at the Athens Democracy Forum</a>, in association with the New York Times.&nbsp;</p> <p>On campus, Scholl works as a senior admissions fellow and is chair of the <a href="https://www.greenedgefund.com/">Green EDGE Fund</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>She has also taken secondary voice lessons in the Conservatory of Music and has been a member of the 91ֱ College Choir and Musical Union. “I am excited about the prospect of being in a country containing some of the world’s most historic centers of classical music and opera, and I hope to join a local choir in Villach,” she says.</p> <p>Upon return from her fellowship, Scholl plans to pursue a master’s of public policy program.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Challenging international experiences have helped me in the past, and I know that working as a teaching assistant in Austria will help me to develop skills essential to my pursuit of an international career related to public policy and public service,” Scholl says. “The program also will provide me with specific experience to apply to education policy making endeavors. Working as a teaching assistant and student ambassador will allow me to further advance my organization, empathy, creativity, communications, and even conflict resolution skills—all of which will be relevant in my field of interest.”&nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Teaching assistantship places U.S. students in Austrian secondary schools</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2021-04-28T12:00:00Z">Wed, 04/28/2021 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Amanda Nagy</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2391">Languages &amp; Literatures</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25416">Politics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25371">German</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/politics" hreflang="und">Politics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german" hreflang="und">German Language and Literatures</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Hannah Scholl '21 has been awarded a teaching assistantship in Austria.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Jonathan Clark '25</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/images-2021/hannah_scholl-news-jonathan_clark.jpg?itok=_vyW2T2i" width="760" height="570" alt="Hannah Scholl."> </div> Wed, 28 Apr 2021 18:37:37 +0000 anagy 325906 at Fulbright Fellowship Winner Connects Language to Heritage /news/fulbright-fellowship-winner-connects-language-heritage <span>Fulbright Fellowship Winner Connects Language to Heritage</span> <span><span>ygay</span></span> <span><time datetime="2021-04-27T09:17:45-04:00" title="Tuesday, April 27, 2021 - 09:17">Tue, 04/27/2021 - 09:17</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Ruth Bieber-Stanley ’21 has German ancestors and relatives on both sides of her family, but never learned to speak German as a child. Today, not only does she know the language, but uses it to have an even deeper connection with her heritage.</p> <p>“Learning German was a way to connect with a culture that intrigued me,” says <a href="/blogs/ruth-bieber-stanley" target="_blank">Bieber-Stanley</a>, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico. “I think learning a language is a way to access a culture and that’s what leads to cultural understanding.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Although Bieber-Stanley was also able to take advantage of a study abroad experience in Germany, her time there was cut short due to the pandemic. She hopes her recent Fulbright Fellowship will grant her a second chance.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Fulbright Fellowship provides the opportunity for United States students to serve in professional placements in foreign government ministries or institutions to gain hands-on public sector experience in participating foreign countries. Bieber-Stanley, a <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/psychology" target="_blank">psychology</a> and <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german" target="_blank">German</a> major with a <a href="/arts-and-sciences/languages/studying-linguistics" target="_blank">linguistics concentration</a>, will be in Germany for 10 months, where she will teach English in a school setting while volunteering with refugee aid organizations and or children and family services, depending on her placement location.&nbsp;</p> <p>Besides becoming more fluent in German, Bieber-Stanley hopes to come away from her experience with perspective on how other countries handle issues such as education, social welfare, elections, and refugee resettlement. She also hopes to challenge herself to live in a place where she will be a complete stranger.&nbsp;</p> <p>“My goal is to become a psychotherapist working with adolescents,” she says. “Part of what was so appealing about the Fulbright was the opportunity to really get to know a community and work and form relationships with people very different from myself, which I consider a crucial skill as a hopeful future clinician.</p> <p>“I picked Germany specifically because of my German heritage, but also because I’m really fascinated by German culture and by Germany’s history as a formerly divided and reunified country. In my senior German seminar we talked a lot about what it means to come to terms with a problematic past and how cultural identity is reformed after conflict and division. I think our country is at a major crossroads right now, and I hope that spending time in Germany with Germans could give me perspective about how I can foster positive change in my own country.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Bieber-Stanley started taking German language classes during her first year at 91ֱ College and developed a love for its intricacies, including its grammar. “It feels like a fun puzzle to me,” she says. “German is also quirky. It has so many fun features that are so generative. The language has a lot of cool concepts and words that don’t really exist in English, which I love. For example, the word “Waldeinsamkeit” describes the feeling of being alone in a large forest contemplating the smallness of your being among old trees, a concept with which I particularly resonate.”</p> <p>Some of the German classes at 91ֱ that have added to Bieber-Stanley’s interest in the language include an Expressionist German course and poetry translation workshop in the comparative literature department, where she translated contemporary German poetry, some of which she recently presented at the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/languages/translation-symposium" target="_blank">Jed Deppman Translation Symposium</a>. Bieber-Stanley also took a class with 91ֱ’s <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german/writer-residence/nora-gomringer" target="_blank">Max Kade German Writer in Residence Nora Gomringer</a> in 2019. Gomringer, an accomplished German poet, held weekly classes where she shared her work, the work of others, and the German culture.&nbsp;</p> <p>Students who would like to learn German, but are too intimidated to pursue it should just try it, says Bieber-Stanley. “The German classes at 91ֱ are so fast paced, so fun, and so rewarding. Participate in department events, watch German films and series, and listen to German music. If that isn’t enough, learning German to travel is also a great incentive. Germany is a wonderful place. The natural landscape is beautiful, the arts are so privileged, and so many cities are full of European fairy-tale charm. That, and the bread is like, really good. I was nervous to learn German, too, but it’s brought me so much and I would not be here today if I hadn’t decided to enroll in German 101 as a first-year student.”</p> <p>After completing her Fulbright Fellowship, Bieber-Stanley plans to pursue a master’s degree in clinical social work and potentially a PhD in counseling psychology.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Bieber-Stanley is also a member of the 91ֱ College Tau Lambda chapter of Delta Phi Alpha, the national German honor society, and the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society.</p> <p><br> &nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2021-04-27T12:00:00Z">Tue, 04/27/2021 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Yvonne Gay</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25236">Linguistics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25286">Psychology</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25371">German</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/psychology" hreflang="und">Psychology</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german" hreflang="und">German Language and Literatures</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Ruth Bieber-Stanley ’21</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Jonathan Clark '25</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/images-2021/ruth.jonathan_clark_25.jpg?itok=MU-wJ_zE" width="760" height="540" alt="A photo portrait of a female student in a small courtyard.."> </div> Tue, 27 Apr 2021 13:17:45 +0000 ygay 324861 at Ilana Ascher Awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Germany /news/ilana-ascher-awarded-fulbright-english-teaching-assistantship-germany <span>Ilana Ascher Awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Germany</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2020-07-15T14:28:55-04:00" title="Wednesday, July 15, 2020 - 14:28">Wed, 07/15/2020 - 14:28</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Ilana Ascher ’19, a psychology and German double major from Frederick, Maryland, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Germany.&nbsp;</p> <p>Ascher was encouraged to apply for the Fulbright opportunity after taking a class with Professor of German <a href="/steven-huff">Steve Huff</a>. “I was amazed by how I could fall in love with the language all over again—and much more seriously than when I had studied German in middle school,” says Ascher. “The books we read were enthralling German crime novels, and Steve was an amazing professor. He is the one who essentially put a piece of paper in front of me and urged me to declare my first, and most surprising, major at 91ֱ. This was the first step that sparked my journey to becoming a Fulbright scholar.”&nbsp;</p> <p>During her Fulbright experience, Ascher hopes to become involved in community building, focusing primarily on salient issues in the United States, such as police violence, so that she “can open a discussion about how different countries and cultures have historically responded to issues of racism and policing.” She also plans to focus on environmentalism, as she says these efforts look very different in the U.S. than they do in Germany.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Many of the students will be from a different background than myself, so I plan on having the classroom be a space of collaboration where we can all explore our ties to different cultures, as well as our shared ties to Germany,” she says. “Overall, I hope to bring with me a realistic depiction of the United States, one that is not romanticized and truly encompasses American culture.”&nbsp;</p> <p>While abroad, Ascher says that she would like to improve her grasp of the German language. “I would love to become as close to fluent as possible and set myself up to complete my schooling in Germany, or even begin a career there.” She is also committed to “making a world a better place for children” and hopes to gain practical experience in the field of education, laying the groundwork for a career as a teacher, social worker, or even a developmental psychologist. But, says Ascher, “My dream is to one day become a German professor at 91ֱ College. This Fulbright seems like a good place to start.”<br> <br> During her time at 91ֱ, Ascher was involved in club and intramural sports, including bowling and softball; she also was on the varsity field hockey team during her first year on campus. In the classroom, Ascher conducted psychology research, both independently and with research groups. She received the Stetson-Heiser award for applied psychology for her research on carpooling and increasing carpooling among 91ֱ staff and faculty. She also published a story about the function of the amygdala for the Synapse, 91ֱ's intercollegiate science magazine. Ascher was also involved with the 91ֱ City School system and worked for the <a href="/bcsl/programs/ninde-scholars">Ninde Scholars Program</a> as a tutor in the 91ֱ City School District. Through American Counts, she also served as math tutor and worked for <a href="https://serve.oberlin.edu/agency/detail/?agency_id=35505">The Bridge</a> after school program.&nbsp;</p> <p>Post-Fulbright, she hopes to attend graduate school. “Whatever I do, I will apply my work to help children and students through social work, education, and/or research. My future is still very much undecided, and I believe that my Fulbright experience will provide some more clarity.”<br> <br> “My utmost appreciation, and a huge shoutout, goes to the faculty and staff at 91ֱ College. The professors who guided me through my time, namely Professor Steve Huff and Professor of Psychology and Environmental Studies <a href="/cindy-frantz">Cindy Frantz</a>, are so sincerely dedicated to their students. I still believe that the most amazing thing about 91ֱ are the people who work there. I would also equally like to give credit to Director of Fellowships and Awards <a href="/nick-petzak">Nick Petzak</a>. It is no surprise that 91ֱ produces a large number of Fulbright scholars with such an amazing advisor working at the Office of Fellowships and Awards. Funded by the United States Congress and German Bundestag, CBYX is a cultural immersion program in which 75 American and 75 German young professionals spend one year studying, interning, and living with hosts in each others’ countries.</p> <p>After studying abroad in Germany during his junior year, Griffin knew he wanted to return. Griffin says he gained an appreciation for the country after exploring its cities and interacting with locals. “These moments all contributed to some of my best experiences during college,” he says. “However, I believe there is more to learn and explore. The CBYX program seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to go back to Germany and really immerse myself in the culture and language.”</p> <p>While at 91ֱ, the computer science major from Brooklyn, New York, worked as a lab assistant for the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/computer-science">computer science department</a> and for the <a href="/cit">Center for Information Technology</a> help desk. He was also a member of the club soccer team.&nbsp;</p> <p>During his fellowship, Griffin will take language classes, participate in an internship, and live with a host family. After his fellowship concludes, he hopes to continue living in the country and find work as a software engineer in Berlin, where he says there are a significant number of startups.&nbsp;</p> <p>Griffin says others should apply for the CBYX program, regardless of their degree of fluency in German. “I definitely encourage anyone who is interested to apply,” he says. “This is a great opportunity to go abroad and step out of the U.S. to see how people in another country live. No matter what your knowledge of the German language is, you should look into this program.”</p> <p>Griffin credits the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german">Department of German Studies</a> for fostering his growth in learning German. “I would like to give a big shout to the German studies department,” he says. “The faculty work really hard to create exciting events for students. So whether it be Stammtisch at the Feve every Monday night or German movie night every Wednesday, there were always plenty of things to keep me motivated.”</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2020-06-08T12:00:00Z">Mon, 06/08/2020 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Hillary Hempstead</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2410">Students</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25371">German</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25321">Computer Science</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german" hreflang="und">German Language and Literatures</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/computer-science" hreflang="und">Computer Science</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Computer science major Lukas Griffin ’20.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Courtesy of Lukas Griffin</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/lukas-v1-sm.png?itok=kKhSEcoH" width="760" height="570" alt="Lukas Griffin in a red shirt and smiling."> </div> Tue, 09 Jun 2020 15:59:06 +0000 hhempste 252676 at Hannah Scholl ’21 Awarded Delta Phi Alpha Scholarship /news/hannah-scholl-21-awarded-delta-phi-alpha-scholarship <span>Hannah Scholl ’21 Awarded Delta Phi Alpha Scholarship</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2020-04-27T12:27:42-04:00" title="Monday, April 27, 2020 - 12:27">Mon, 04/27/2020 - 12:27</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Hannah Scholl ’21 has had a passion for the German language and culture since high school.</p> <p>When she visited a German high school as part of a student exchange program, Scholl recalls a particularly memorable moment from the welcome party: “I was astonished by the German students who brought their own plates, silverware, and cups from their home. It was a stark difference from how Americans often use plastic products in their social events.”</p> <p>When Scholl came to 91ֱ, she was able to directly enter into 300-level courses. Now, she is a third-year German and politics major. She was awarded the Delta Phi Alpha Scholarship to study at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.</p> <p>The Delta Phi Alpha National German Honorary Society seeks to honor excellence in the study of German, providing scholarships&nbsp;and promoting the study of German language, literature, and civilization. 91ֱ College formed the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german/academic-opportunities">Tau Lambda</a> chapter of Delta Phi Alpha in fall 2014.</p> <p>“My first class was about conversation and composition. I had the opportunity to really practice my speaking and get a lot of feedback directly from the professor because it was such a small group. I’ve taken a German class every semester since.”</p> <p>Scholl lives in <a href="/kade">German House</a>, one of 91ֱ’s language-based Program Houses. A resident assistant, a faculty in residence, and a program assistant live on-site to coordinate activities that are often German in theme, such as movie nights, baking, and other events.</p> <p>“Something I’ve enjoyed at 91ֱ is the German language table at Stevenson Dining Hall,” Scholl says. “During lunch or dinner, if you sit at the German table, you’re only allowed to speak German. A professor from the German department or a program assistant who is a native speaker will always be there to facilitate the conversation. It’s a great opportunity to meet other students from the department and make friends.”</p> <p>Besides practicing German through those casual activities, Scholl also enjoys taking courses through the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german/writer-residence">German Writer in Residence</a> program. 91ֱ College has offered the program since 1968, and it is the oldest of its kind in the country. Supported by the Max Kade Foundation, the college is able to invite a German author to reside in 91ֱ for a year. Last semester, Scholl took classes with German poet <a href="/news/conversation-nora-gomringer-max-kade-writer-residence">Nora Gomringer</a>.</p> <p>While Scholl was called back to the United States due to the COVID-19 outbreak that affected the safety of 91ֱ students studying abroad, Scholl was able to keep her scholarship and hopes to return to Germany through a fellowship program or internship. She is interested in a career related to public policy and public service, and she plans to attend grad school to pursue a related degree.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">News Story</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2020-04-26T12:00:00Z">Sun, 04/26/2020 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Carson Li ’20</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2410">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2391">Languages &amp; Literatures</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25371">German</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/german" hreflang="und">German Language and Literatures</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Hannah Scholl ’21</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Courtesy of Hannah Scholl</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/hannah-scholl.jpg?itok=58Ruz0NZ" width="760" height="570" alt="Hannah Scholl in front of snow covered pine trees."> </div> Mon, 27 Apr 2020 16:27:42 +0000 hhempste 245961 at
