Dance Diaspora Performs Fall Show

Joyous jazz music filled Warner Main Space October 2 and 3 as Dance Diaspora performed its seasonal show Horace Silver: Song For My Father & Other Matters Pertaining To The Heart. Artist in Residence Adenike Sharpley 鈥00, who served as the show鈥檚 artistic director and choreographer, says the show鈥檚 themes included fatherhood and healing from wounds.
鈥淗orace Silver is known for having a joyful mood in his music. I have juxtaposed the joyful mood of the music with visual representations of harsh realities of society for people of color,鈥 she says.
The show featured dancers Sophie Mvurya 鈥16, Donnay Edmund 鈥16, Lindsey Nwabueze 鈥16, Khalid Taylor 鈥16, Cassandra Brown 鈥17, Niya Smith-Wilson 鈥17, and Sikora Sikorski 鈥17. Sharpley was also among the dancers.
Kevin Louis 鈥99 served as the show鈥檚 musical director. Louis also played trumpet for the show. Other alumni musicians included Josh Moton 鈥13, cello; Shea Pierre 鈥14, piano; and Malachi Thomas 鈥14, tenor saxophone. Student musicians included Lawrence Galloway 鈥16, trombone; Daniel Spearman 鈥17, trumpet and piano; Gailyn Gabriel 鈥18, bass; Michael Ode 鈥18, drums; and Michael Spearman 鈥19, trombone.
