Included in that is content creation and photography which takes up most of my time. On game days, I prepare social media content, take photos, and schedule game workers, as well as take statistics during the match. Afterwards, I write up post-game recaps, organize photos, and update team records in preparation of their next contest.

How long have you been at 91ֱ? I have been here for just over a year.

What do you enjoy most about your work? There’s plenty to enjoy about the job but I especially love taking in-game photographs and hosting media days for our athletes. They are a small part of my work but it’s great to see the athletes interact with one another and get excited for their season.

Are you an athlete? I played lacrosse in college, but since then I’ve not been able to partake in many organized sports. I did, however, compete in a dodgeball league with my partner recently and we won the league championship!

We have quite a few teams in athletics. How do you juggle it all? I am fortunate enough to work with Mike Mancini, who is a veteran in this field, as well as our phenomenal student workers who really keep the ship afloat. We do as much as we can to be proactive on the job, but with the schedule of athletics constantly fluctuating, it’s imperative that we are able to respond and adapt on a quick turnaround.

What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended? As part of the job, I attend nearly every home sporting event, so there are a ton of memories related to athletics, but my first game here at 91ֱ sticks out. It was a baseball doubleheader against Hilbert College last April, and it was especially important because it was the opener for the spring season that we weren’t expecting to have. The atmosphere was electric, and you could feel the excitement from all the athletes in the stadium. Although there were no spectators allowed, it felt like a packed house and the team dominated the Hawks for a game one victory. It was a great way to kickstart my 91ֱ experience.

Hobbies? I try to get outside, go on walks, be active, cook new recipes, and perfect old ones. I don’t have any secret talents or big hobbies, but I’ve recently found more time for reading.

Favorite food? Narrowing down to just one favorite food is such a challenge, but every time I go to the Feve, their habanero rangoons are a must-have.

Campus News

Fri, 04/01/2022 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

Part of Amanda Phillips’ job as assistant director of athletics communications is to attend almost every home game event, serve as game photographer, and write post-game recaps. The show is also meant to be an inclusive space that rejects the norms and traditions of the fashion industry in regard to what body types should be.

Because next year’s show is typically inspired by the previous year, planning begins soon after the last model has left the stage. In reviewing the recent show, committee members discuss what worked and what didn’t, and general ideas for next year’s show are also noted. Planning momentum picks up shortly after fall semester begins.

A theme represents each BHM fashion show and often reflects the attire models will demonstrate. In 2018, Sankofa Remix’d: Reclaiming My Fly featured African-influenced clothing. In 2020, Look Black At It: 50 Years of Fashion gave audience members a glimpse at some of the unique styles that influenced the fashion industry and the nation during the last 50 years. And in 2021, models adorned pillows, hazmat suits, and sleepwear for Quarantine Couture. This year showcased models in a variety of African-influenced prints and formal styles in BLACK LIFE RELOADED.

And as with every BHM fashion show, audience members not only cheer for fashion, but for the students, faculty, and staff wearing it. This year, about 34 91ֱ community members strutted the walkway.

“It’s an event where students representing many parts of campus participate,” explains Candice Raynor, director and faculty in residence of Afrikan Heritage House. “Whether it's modeling or performing, you have both the conservatory and the college, student-athletes, performing arts students, STEM students, visual arts students, and mixes of those groups participating.

“I think the event is popular because it's a fun and an interesting way to celebrate Black History Month and Black cultures at 91ֱ,” continues Raynor. “There is always a lot to be learned from the show as far as Black culture and Black contributions to fashion and pop culture in general.”

We continue our photo tour with a secret marriage in Hall Auditorium, a benefit for Ukraine at First United Methodist Church of 91ֱ, art study in the Allen Memorial Art Museum, poetry reading at the ‘Sco, a historic wintery win for the men’s lacrosse team at the Austin E. During that time, I served as assistant coach for two years, interim head coach for one year, and head coach for 15.

What do you enjoy most about basketball? I enjoy the combination of individual freedom with discipline and teamwork. Basketball has evolved so much over the last few years that each player can bring a unique twist to the game while the team aspect enhances each player’s abilities.

What do you enjoy most about coaching? I enjoy the challenge of helping our players and our team exceed the average learning curve so that they can achieve greater things over a longer stretch of time. Figuring out how to make that connection with each individual personality is hard, but when the majority of the group gets on that path, it’s fun watching their growth take on its own energy.

How did you first become involved with the game? I used to go with my dad to basketball games all the time. I really don’t remember a time in life when basketball wasn’t my favorite thing.

What position did you play in college? I played at Yale University and graduated in 2001. I was a point guard to start my career but spent a lot of time at shooting guard after three knee surgeries took away a bit of my already limited speed. My most memorable game would have to be a double-overtime win against Princeton in the John J. Lee Amphitheater that snapped their long winning streak. We even got to go on SportsCenter!

Most memorable game (or season) as a coach at 91ֱ? The 2019–2020 NCAC conference tournament win at DePauw is the most memorable win I’ve experienced here at 91ֱ. My favorite season was probably the 2018–2019 season because we finally broke into the top half of the NCAC.

Free throws tend to throw even the best players off their game. Any advice you can give on making a successful free throw? Don’t overthink it. Keep your shoulders relaxed, take a deep breath (and exhale), release from your fingertips, and let it go.

Favorite movie? Hangover 3

Favorite childhood memory? Any time our family would all get together, usually for a birthday party or holiday.

Best vacation ever? Summer of 2019, my wife, kids, and I went to southern California and spent time at a beach and Disneyland.

Any recent achievements you would like to tell us about? I’ve been selected to coach in the first Silverwaves Media All-Academic All-American Rising Stars game in New Orleans at the Men’s Final Four this year. I’m really excited to be a part of what I think will become a major, annual event.

Hobbies? I still like to exercise, mostly by working out at basketball or doing kickboxing workouts off campus. I also oversee the strength and conditioning program and the athletics department’s communications office. I’m also charged with cultivating relationships with 91ֱ’s alumni base and overseeing the John W. Heisman Club (the athletics department’s main fundraising arm). In 2014, I began overseeing the department’s athletic and recreation facilities, facility staffing and maintenance. I also manage most capital and facility improvement projects.

Which professional athlete do you admire the most and why? I admire any athlete at any level that works hard both on and off the playing field—an all-around good person that is a great role model.

What sport do you play (or have played)? I played basketball and baseball at Midview High School. I played baseball in college at NCAA Division II Ashland University. Once I become an empty-nester next year, I’ll be spending more time on the golf course.

How many years have you worked at 91ֱ? It will be nine—adventurous and always fun—years this April.

Best advice someone ever gave you? “Just show up and work hard. Nothing comes for free, you have to earn it. Hard work does pay off—even if you have to be patient in the process.” This is what my parents instilled in me and my siblings at a young age.

Favorite sports team? All things Cleveland and any 91ֱ team that beats that team in Gambier! :)

Favorite place in 91ֱ? In the stands or the press box for an athletics contest. It’s the best part of the job. All the craziness you deal with day-to-day goes away and you are finally able to enjoy seeing all the hard work pay off as our scholar-athletes perform. We have had some great teams during my time here. It’s a very rewarding experience to watch their success and know you had a little something to do with it.

Favorite childhood memory? One of my favorites was the year I got my first bicycle for Christmas. We finished opening the gifts under the tree and my dad said, “I think I saw one more for your sister and you out in the mudroom.”

Best vacation ever? Mumbai, India. I have been there twice and it’s always half vacation and half visiting family. My wife’s parents moved to the states from India in 1964. However, most of her immediate family members still live there, a large number of them in Mumbai. India’s a beautiful place. It’s very peaceful. The food is amazing and the sights and different cultures are incredible. My favorite journey in India to date was the one from Delhi to Agra to see the Taj Mahal.

Any achievements you would like to tell us about? I have been fortunate to be inducted into my high school’s hall of fame, celebrating my playing days and its hall of honor for my time there as the athletics director. Those were two pretty cool moments of reflection.

Hobbies? Anything outdoors and working with my hands. I love camping, sitting by a fire and fishing when I can find time. I enjoy repairing and building stuff. I’m the son of a carpenter, so I love being in a house or woodshop fixing or creating something new or upgrading an old item. I also enjoy working in the yard.

Nickname(s)? During a game at Southern Indiana, when I was an underclassman at Ashland, a sports information assistant came down from the press box to get first names for our starters. An upperclassman on the team thought it would be funny to give him different names for the young guys, including the coaches. So when I went up to bat for the first time, the public address announcer said, “now up to bat, the catcher Simon Jantz. My nickname the rest of the way through college was Simon and to this day when I see my former teammates.

Favorite food? An all-beef hot dog and a beer at any sporting event always hits the spot!

Favorite quote or personal philosophy? “If that’s the worst thing that happens to you in your life, consider yourself lucky.” It’s something my mom would always tell us growing up. It has helped get me through some real tragedies in life. Just puts things in perspective.

Campus News

Fri, 01/21/2022 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

Thanks to a teammate’s practical joke, Creg Jantz was called Simon Jantz throughout most of his college years. Three students carrying their selections from the program serve as inspiration for this week’s photo series.

These three students—and others who are also enrolled this semester—participated in an 81-year-old tradition this past weekend. On June 5, students arrived at the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM), selected a piece of artwork, and walked their carefully wrapped packages back to their residence halls, where they will be on display for the remainder of the semester. Although Art Rental procedures were slightly adjusted this year, the semesterly program continued to give students the opportunity to truly appreciate a work of art by living with it over time. This semester more than 340 pieces of artwork were rented by students. See more summer Art Rental photos on 91ֱ’s Flickr page.

Our photo series continues with another tradition, TGIF, and works its way downtown to the reopening of the Apollo Theatre.
