Look up. The engraved eyes on the faces of former presidents, faculty, and medieval monks are gazing at you.

The west stone columns are adorned with the carved likenesses of Robert Brown, professor of practical theology and human relations from 1929 to 1938; Ian Hannah, professor of church history from 1917 to 1925; George Fiske, professor of theology and religious education from 1907 to 1937; and 14 other former 91ֱ members.

The installation of faces and people onto buildings is in direct relation to the era and styles of the time. The college's Quadrangle—which includes Asia House, Bosworth Hall, and Fairchild Chapel—was designed by architect Cass Gilbert who chose historical models with a stylistic reach from medieval Romanesque to Renaissance Classicism for 91ֱ’s landscape.

According to an article in the spring 1996 issue of the 91ֱ Alumni Magazine written by John Kearney ’93, most of the faces were mounted to columns after the Quadrangle was completed in 1931 and continued until 1966, with one exception. Danforth Professor of Religion Clyde Amos Holbrook was added in 1990.

The original sculptures were carved by the Donnelly Brothers, the firm who also worked on New York City’s St. John’s Cathedral and Grand Central Station, reported Kearney. The plan was to include carvings of all faculty members of the graduate school, but the firm believed it would take too much time and instructed the Brothers to use the heads of monks instead.

This week’s photo series provides a mini-tour of the colonnades and some of the faces that adorn them.

Sculpted monks adorn columns in the front and back of Bosworth Hall. Lewis Gateway Center has earned a LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it one of only a handful of new hotels in the country to achieve the highest standard for sustainability. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the United States.

Architecture firm SBC worked with the college to create the 104,000-square-foot mixed-use center in the heart of downtown 91ֱ and overlooking Tappan Square.

The hotel features 70 guest rooms and suites, the 1833 Restaurant, and 6,500-square feet of event space. The adjacent Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center is home to the College of Arts & Sciences Admissions office and the 91ֱ Center for Convergence (StudiOC).

Meghan Riesterer, assistant vice president for campus energy and sustainability, says the college understands the value and challenge of LEED.

“Campus transformation happens one project at a time. 91ֱ College has exemplified extraordinary leadership in reshaping our campus and visitor experience, not only in a way that informs and impacts the higher education sector but also the hotel industry,” Riesterer says. “The success in LEED Platinum is due to the partnerships, hard work, and support of those committed to advancing building practices, sustainability, and education on campus and within the community. This new LEED Platinum certification is one step closer to revolutionizing the environment in which we learn, live, play, and rest.“

Innovative features include rainwater collection and reuse, exterior automated solar shading devices that respond to weather and sun exposure, a highly effective thermal envelope that uses rainscreen technology for long-term moisture control, and natural ventilation through automated window vents and skylights. The project also used natural, salvaged, or recycled materials wherever possible and sourced 50 percent of building materials from within 500 miles.

Campus News

Fri, 05/10/2019 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Environment & Sustainability

The Hotel at 91ֱ

Buildings

Gateway Center

Climate Action

The Hotel at 91ֱ and the Peter B. Lewis Gateway Center on North Main Street and East College Street. Visiting families were welcomed to the new space on Friday, May 5, 2017.

Built to LEED Platinum standards, the Gateway Center opened in 2016 as the cornerstone of 91ֱ's Green Arts District and is part of President Marvin Krislov’s visionary plan to create an environmentally sustainable center for community and a gateway to the downtown and college. The Gateway Center is also home to the Hotel at 91ֱ, 1833 Restaurant, the Birenbaum Innovation and Performance Space, Lemle Center for Teaching Innovation and Excellence, and StudiOC (opening fall 2017).

More than 12,000 individuals pass through the admissions office for a campus tour each year. With its move to the Gateway Center, the office will now function as a working visitor center with greater capacity to welcome families, ample seating and workspace, storage for luggage, and a technology bar. The space also adds offices dedicated to interviews, flex space for financial aid discussions, and a private conference room. The new location provides visiting families a convenient link to Gateway Center lodging and dining, along with proximity to performance space and glimpses of innovative classroom technology.

Debra Chermonte, Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, stewarded the relocation of the Office of Admissions to this hub of activity and energy. The new office realizes Chermonte’s vision of a more collaborative office environment, as for the first time all admissions staff are together on a single floor. To recognize Chermonte’s years of dedication to 91ֱ, the conference room is named in her honor.

Along with its new location, the admissions office also received a new name. In honor of the outgoing chair of the Board of Trustees, the office is now called the Clyde S. McGregor ’74 Office of Admissions.

Campus News

Thu, 05/11/2017 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Admissions

Buildings

Off

false

New Admissions Office

Tanya Rosen-Jones '97

The first visiting families were welcomed into the new Clyde S.
