Photo credit: Mike Crupi</figcaption> </figure> </div> <p>After a three-year hiatus, the <a href="/alumni-association">91ֱ�� Alumni Association</a> relaunched reunion activities with the classes of 1997, 1970, 1971, and 1972 on June 3 to June 5. More than 300 alumni pre-registered for the weekend. </p> <p><a href="/commencement" target="_blank">Graduation exercises</a> concluded CRW 2022 as 665 members of the graduating class were awarded bachelor of music, artist diplomas, double-degrees, and bachelor of arts. After the interruption of the pandemic, the last class to graduate on the square was in 2019. Now, 91ֱ��’s long tradition continues with a class that includes 665 members receiving their degrees—85 bachelor of music; two artist diplomas; 35 double-degree; and 543 bachelor of arts. She would later lend her hand to more than 30 works, including children’s books, literary criticism, poetry, and self-help literature. Among her acknowledgements, hooks was recognized as one of the most influential women of the past century by <a href="https://time.com/5793676/bell-hooks-100-women-of-the-year/" target="_blank"><em>TIME</em> in 2020</a>. Photo credit: Yvonne Gay</figcaption> </figure> </div> <p>The <a href="/news/concerts-library" target="_blank">Tiny Ref Desk Concerts</a> are modeled after the popular <a href="https://www.npr.org/series/tiny-desk-concerts/" target="_blank">NPR Tiny Desk concert series</a>: 20-minute intimate performances in a noise-free environment. </p> <p><a href="/kathy-abromeit" target="_blank">Abromeit</a> launched 91ֱ��’s rendition of the concerts in the fall of 2018. By December 2019, 10 guest performers, faculty, and students had taken the tiny concert stage, fulfilling what Abromeit had hoped: challenging the stereotypes of a library and bringing it to life. The last concert—given just before the height of the pandemic—was held in March 2020 by a group of women who performed suffrage songs as part of 91ֱ��’s Women's Leadership and Suffrage programming.</p> <p>On March 1, after a small delay to allow for more guests to make their way to the conservatory library, Abromeit welcomed siblings Jake and Eliza Balmuth to the tiny stage. After the concert visitors were invited to a pop-up Women’s History Month exhibit in the Special Collections room. A woodwinds quintessence concert is scheduled for April 28. Antopol was joined on stage by Associate Professor of Creative Writing <a href="/emily-barton" target="_blank">Emily Barton</a> and Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature and Jewish Studies <a href="/sheera-talpaz" target="_blank">Sheera Talpaz</a> for a discussion and question and answer session. During her week-long residency, Antopol also workshopped with students in classes taught by Barton and Talpaz. The 91ֱ�� A Cappella Choir—known today as the 91ֱ�� College Choir—was founded in 1929 by Olaf C. Christiansen, a composer and 91ֱ�� Conservatory professor. The collaborative and community-fostering nature of group performance was a great fit for students. Through the years, many assembled their own ensembles that also took on styles all their own. For instance, Pitch Please describe themselves as “funky-fresh, multi-genre, and the sassiest, classiest bunch of individuals you’ll ever meet.” The Acapelicans refer to themselves as a “free-flying group” whose fans know them to be “spunky, energetic, fun, and musically adventurous.”</p> <p>Student groups perform several concerts throughout the year, with one of the most anticipated being the fall A Cappella Study Break Concert. During this time, members of the 91ֱ�� community are invited to take a break from the rigors of study and listen to their peers interpret a mix of musical tunes.</p> <p>With many live performances hindered by the pandemic, the fall performance was a thrill for performers and spectators alike. Included in the line-up were the Acapelicans, Nothing but Treble, the Obertones, Pitch Please, and ’Round Midnight.</p> <p>“We love performing at study break because it’s a time for us to share our newest and favorite arrangements with the rest of the 91ֱ�� community as well as introduce our new members to the audience,” says Nihal Dayal Kodavarti ’23, copresident of the Obertones, whose group has been active since 1984. “It’s also a great time to connect with the other a cappella groups and strengthen the music community across campus. It’s been great getting back to in person singing and watching all of the other groups perform live again after over a year.” </p> <p>This week’s tour continues with more of the fall semester’s A Cappella Study Break Concert.
