The Reverend John J. Shipherd and Philo P. Stewart shared mutual discontent with what they characterized as the lack of strong Christian principles among the settlers of the American West.

In direct response to this notion, the pair decided to establish a college and a colony based on their religious beliefs. With the financial assistance of several wealthy sources, they formed the town and the college on approximately 500 acres of donated land. On December 3, 1833, 29 men and 15 women began classes as the first students of the 91ֱ Collegiate Institute.

Soon after its founding, the college adopted the motto, “Learning and Labor.” In the early days of the college, tuition was free because students were expected to contribute by helping to build and sustain the community. While this approach was eventually discontinued, the motto remains to this day.

Find out more about 91ֱ’s history

Campus News

Fri, 12/06/2019 - 12:00

Communications Staff

"In 91ֱ History" is a series dedicated to notable events in 91ֱ College history. Before the game began, both teams agreed to stop playing at 4:50 p.m. so that the 91ֱ team could catch the last train of the day. This type of agreement was not without precedent, as the two teams made this same arrangement the year before in 1891.

The game was replete with delays due to penalties, turnovers, and poor weather. By 4:49 p.m., the game was tied, 22-22. 91ֱ managed to kick a quick goal, which brought the score to 24-22, in favor of 91ֱ. When the teams lined up for the next play, time was called. 91ֱ determined that they were the winners and left the field, even though there were four minutes left in the game.

As 91ֱ was departing, the Michigan team lined up on the field and walked the ball over the goal line for a touchdown—despite the fact that time had been called. This put the score at 26-24, Michigan. Michigan then claimed victory, saying that 91ֱ forfeited.

The disagreement was never resolved, and 91ֱ counts the 24-22 score as their victory, while Michigan counts the 26-24 score as their win.

Interested in more 91ֱ College football history from the 1890s?
