The more I’ve worked as a translator, the more I have realized how much versatility it requires. If you’re going to translate something well, especially a poem, you can’t just be good at the language you’re working with; you also have to have the creative chops to maintain the artistic aspects of the original language.” </p> <p>They recently teamed up with Associate Professor and Chair of Classics <a href="/chris-trinacty">Christopher Trinacty</a> to publish a <a href="https://classicalstudies.org/node/35364">blog post</a> for the Society for Classical Studies. This post offers a reading of the new graphic novel by Anne Carson and Rosanna Bruno, <em>The Trojan Women: A Comic</em>. Carson and Bruno manipulate Euripides’ original text into a bleak visual and verbal tableau that acts as a meditation on the horrors of war. </p> <p>“Examining the rich layers of their transformative work provided an enlightening view on the different ways in which Classical texts can be received and applied to a modern context,” says Glen.</p> <p>In addition, Hudson’s essay about Ovid’s representations of Medea and Procne was published in the undergraduate Classics journal <em><a href="https://www.apsu.edu/philomathes/HudsonPhilomathes5.12021Online.pdf">Philomathes</a></em> this summer. Greenberg Professor of Classics, describes how this year’s Translation Symposium looked different than in years past—most obviously in format but also in the absence of the event’s beloved founder <a href="/news/memoriam-professor-comparative-literature-and-english-jed-deppman">Jed Deppman</a>. Ormand explains that even with these challenges, the symposium continued and student translators shone. </p> <p>Says Ormand: </p> <p>Every year since 2002, the <a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/comparative-literature">comparative literature</a> program has held its <a href="/oclc/languages/translation-symposium">Translation Symposium</a>—an opportunity for students to gather and present brief translations of literary works. The range of works is always impressive, from well-known pieces by canonical authors to little-known poems by artists whose work has remained politically or poetically on the edge. Each presenter has only five minutes to do three things: read a passage in the original language, read their own, original translation into English, and then say a few words about their process of translation. Translations can be as literal or as poetically free as the translator wishes; a central principle has been the assertion that translation is itself artistic creation. The event is polyglottal, multilingual, and polyvalent, and it showcases some of the most creative work of our highly talented majors. </p> <p>This year marked a special moment in the history of the event. First, and most importantly, this year the symposium was officially named after Jed Deppman—the recently departed, much beloved, and much admired—former chair of comparative literature, who founded the event more than fifteen years ago. Jed passed away this summer, after a long battle with advanced cancer. As <a href="/stiliana-milkova">Stiliana Milkova</a>, assistant professor of comparative literature and Italian, said in her opening remarks, “This is the first time we are organizing the translation symposium without the brilliant, inspiring presence of its founder, Professor Jed Deppman…He was a remarkable scholar and an exceptional teacher worshipped by his students. And he cared profoundly about literary translation….Professor Deppman inaugurated the first Translation Symposium in 2002 and since, it has become our signature event, our annual recognition of our students’ linguistic virtuosity and creative talent. To honor Professor Deppman, we have renamed the translation symposium in his memory. In this way, he will always be part of it.”</p> <p>Second, and more obviously, this year we had to reimagine the event as a webcast. With the able help of <a href="/abe-reshad">Abe Reshad</a> of the <a href="/cilc">Cooper International Learning Center</a>, we were able to hold the event over Zoom with a simultaneous livestream over YouTube Live. The sound quality was not perfect, and the video quality is limited by each of the participants’ technology and broadband. It also signaled a change in the language spoken: From conversation between the DJs to the music and interviews played, the live weekly hourlong program is broadcast in Spanish.</p> <p>Españoberlin is a product of the course Conversation and Communication in Spanish (HISP 303), which is led by Hispanic Studies Instructor and Director of the Cooper International Learning Center (CILC) Barbara Sawhill. The idea for incorporating a radio program into the course hatched two years ago during a conversation between Sawhill and her then teaching assistant, a member of the WOBC board.</p> <p>“My job in this class is to help my students become more effective communicators, more effective conversationalists, and better listeners,” Sawhill says. “One of the hardest things to do when learning a second language is to listen to your voice in that language. A great way to work on your speaking abilities is to make recordings over time, and so the idea of radio was really intriguing to me.”</p> <p>To produce Españoberlin each week, one or more students in the class volunteer as DJs and select a theme for their show. Sophomore Sydney Garvis, a geology major with minors in environmental studies and Hispanic studies, was enrolled in HISP 303 in spring 2015. She DJ’d Españoberlin twice, choosing “favorite travels” and “cuentos de hadas” (fairy tales) as show themes. “It was my first time being on the radio, and I was speaking exclusively in Spanish, my second language! It was terrifying but also really fun,” Garvis says. Sawhill and a teaching assistant are with the students in the studio during the show each week to lend technical assistance and to help calm nerves.</p> <p>The remaining students in the class are tasked with creating three- to five-minute segments based on the theme the DJs selected. “Though only one or two students DJ'd at a time, it was always a class effort,” says Rebecca Cohen, a comparative literature major and Hispanic studies minor who served as a teaching assistant for the class this spring. “Assignments for the class included recording PSAs, news pieces, and station IDs in Spanish and English, all of which were available for the DJs to play during their shows. Many of the anecdotes that members of the class shared were comical and poignant, produced with professional-sounding editing and clear radio voices.”</p> <p>Sawhill utilizes <a href="http://radioambulante.org/">Radio Ambulante</a>—a podcast often described as This American Life in Spanish—to help her students better understand how to create engaging radio pieces. “By listening to Radio Ambulante, they become aware of the construction of a story: Where the arc is, what sound effects to include, how to use music to build suspense,”Sawhill says. “And so little by little students have been incorporating that into their stories. The level of the production they do for these anecdotes gets better and better every week.”</p> <p>“Really listening to myself speak in Spanish was challenging,” Garvis says. “No professor I had previously made me record myself. At first it was horrendous, but after a while I heard improvement in the flow of my speaking.”</p> <p>While students who choose to enroll in HISP 303 do so for a variety of reasons, they all leave it with a newfound sense of confidence in their speaking abilities as well as a better understanding of what it’s like to have conversations in Spanish outside of the classroom. “This course helps students see that mistakes are an invaluable part of learning a language, are completely normal amongst native speakers, and are a gateway to improvement rather than a mark of inferiority,” Cohen says.</p> <p>“This course also helps students see that real communication is an inherently generous act that requires curiosity and patience in order to be a good listener. In the process of doing interviews, making and listening to podcasts, and being DJs on WOBC, students are becoming better listeners. ExCos are offered in some languages, such as Korean, if the language you want to learn is not part of the curriculum. But what if the language you want to learn isn’t offered through either of these mediums?</p> <p>There is an option gaining traction on campus: informal language exchanges. Informal language exchanges are organized through the <a href="/cilc">Cooper International Learning Center</a> (CILC), a language teaching and technology resource center that supports the learning of languages and cultures at 91ֱ��. The CILC works closely with the 91ֱ�� Center for Languages and Cultures (OCLC), which works with existing campus offices and departments to strengthen international humanities teaching and research.</p> <p>The exchanges began when, in researching opportunities to broaden the engagement of language departments and foreign language learning with the wider campus as part of the Languages Across the Curriculum Initiative, CILC and OCLC staff found a number of faculty and students who spoke languages that are not part of the 91ֱ�� curriculum—languages spoken in countries where many 91ֱ�� students study abroad.</p> <p>“We found we had this extraordinary resource of languages. We also had students who study abroad who sometimes learn the language of the country and have no way to continue when they come back,” says Barbara Sawhill, Hispanic studies instructor and CILC director. “We put out a call to those students saying, if we could support it, would you be interested in continuing your language study? Everyone said yes, absolutely.”</p> <p>That interest blossomed into four informal language exchanges—or virtual language tables as they were called at the time—that involved 91ֱ�� students and faculty, as well as a student and faculty member from the Ohio State University, that met throughout the 2012-13 academic year. “Students always have needs, either when they return from a country to keep up a language, or they are from a country and want to speak that language, or they are trying to learn a new language,” says Tim Scholl, professor of Russian and comparative literature and OCLC director. “We’re anxious to meet these needs, and language exchanges are an example of how we’re trying to keep their interest in languages and cultures going.”</p> <p>Interest in informal language exchanges resurfaced this semester when Sawhill teamed up with Fellowships Advisor Nick Petzak, who assists students in applying for after-graduation scholarships like Fulbrights. “I met with seniors planning to apply for Fulbrights in September and said if this is of interest to you, you think you will find benefit, and if you are willing to commit to this—understanding that this is not a language course, there will not be tests, and you will not get credit—I will do my best to try to find a heritage speaker.”</p> <p>“It’s a significant competitive advantage, especially for those languages that are not commonly taught, for students to establish a relationship with the country they are applying to by studying the language,” Petzak explains. A handful of students took Sawhill up on her offer.</p> <p>Senior voice major Julia Farbstein, who is applying for a Fulbright in the Czech Republic, came to Sawhill after a classmate gave her the email address of Cate Lytle, a first-year from Prague. “I was telling my music criticism professor how my Fulbright essay had just been ripped apart and I was feeling discouraged,” Farbstein says. “Someone in my class asked me what country I was applying for, and I said the Czech Republic. She said I speak Slovak and I know someone from the Czech Republic who is at 91ֱ�� right now. She gave me Cate’s email, and we organized a lunch through the CILC.”</p> <p>The two have met for one hour twice a week since that lunch in September. Lytle, who speaks Czech, English, and French fluently and is studying Korean, says she is excited to share her native language with Farbstein. “For a lot of people, it’s not a big deal if they meet someone who speaks their language, but there are only 10 million people who speak our dying language, so for me, it’s like you and me, we’re going to be friends,” Lytle says.</p> <p>Farbstein, who speaks French, Italian, and German in addition to her native English, says she wants to learn Czech because she wants to study Czech song. “If I don’t have a working knowledge of the language, there’s really no point in me doing my research,” she says.</p> <p>While most of the recently-formed language exchanges are one-on-one between two students or a faculty member and a student, the Dutch exchange has attracted students, staff, faculty, and community members. A group of anywhere from four to seven meets on Monday evenings in Slow Train to study the language.</p> <p>Marcelo Vinces, director of the Center for Learning, Education and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR), served as the group’s catalyst. “I’m a regular attendee of the Stevie language tables, and I was expressing to Barbara Sawhill how I wished there was a Dutch table. I lived in a Dutch-speaking university town in Belgium for two years and took a Dutch language class there. I had been wanting to keep up with it, but it’s hard without having someone to talk to,” he says. “Barbara said she knew other people interested in Dutch. I also turned to the Office of the Dean of Studies to get the information of anyone who had studied abroad in Dutch-speaking countries, and I put offers on the Classifieds and Switchboard, which attracted more people.”</p> <p>Dutch group member Max Matthee-O’Brien, a first year, has spoken Dutch his whole life. “My dad is from Holland so I grew up speaking Dutch in my house,” he says. Matthee-O’Brien, who also speaks German fluently and is studying French, says he appreciates the opportunity to speak the language. “I like to practice speaking Dutch because I spoke it every day with my dad, and I was afraid I would lose it. I also figured I could help other people who are interested in learning Dutch,” he says.</p> <p>Though it is too soon to tell if the language exchanges have had any positive effect on students’ Fulbright applications, Petzak says they have been “tremendously successful” and says he hopes they continue into next semester and future academic years. Sawhill concurs.</p> <p>“The exchanges have formed a wonderful kind of informal language learning community here,” Sawhill says. “Similar to what happens with the language we teach as part of the formal curriculum, these students are seeing language is an entree into a culture and into a place, and they are about helping people have sensitivity to how a language and a place work.
