And with more than a dozen programs scheduled, the campus is sure to be alive with activity throughout June and July!</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.americanviolasociety.org/">American Viola Society</a> 2016 Festival was held just last week from June 8-11. The festival featured lectures, workshops, master classes, competitions, and a number of performances—including performances by special guest artists Kim Kashkashian, Robert Vernon, Elmar Oliveira, and more.</p> <p><a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/summer-programs/index/hintonbass/">The Hinton Bass Institute</a> kicked off this weekend and continues through Sunday, June 19. The daylong festival <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/celebrating_milt_hinton_-_festival_events#.V2Ac8OcrJO1">Celebrating Milt Hinton</a>—which includes a tour of 91ֱ Conservatory Special Collections, the film <em>Keeping Time: The Life, Music and Photographs of Milt Hinton</em>, a celebration concert, and more—will be held Thursday, June 16. The festival is open to the public.</p> <p>The Apollo Outreach Summer Media Workshop for Teens commenced June 6 and continues through this week. The flagship program of the Apollo Outreach Initiative, the workshop introduces Lorain County teens to various components of the filmmaking process. Short movies produced by this year’s participants will be <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/gala_screening_apollo_outreach_summer_workshop_for_teens_8385#.V2Ac--crJO1">screened at the Apollo</a> from 7 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 19.</p> <p>Read on to learn more about the many other programs happening on campus this summer!</p> <h3>Vocal Academy for High School Students, June 17-26</h3> <p><a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/summer-programs/index/vocal/">The Vocal Academy for High School Students</a> is a rigorous nine-day workshop for high school voice students considering a career in vocal performance or vocal music education. Participants will perform a recital from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, at First United Methodist Church.</p> <h3>91ֱ Dance Intensive, June 19-25</h3> <p>Students ages 14-18 will study ballet, contemporary dance, West African dance, wellness, yoga, pilates, and Hip-Hop with 91ֱ dance faculty and the professional dancers of Neos Dance Theatre. The week-long intensive will culminate in a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 24, in Tappan Square.</p> <h3>Sonic Arts Workshop, June 19-26</h3> <p>High school students age 15 and older work with Technology in Music and Related Arts (TIMARA) program faculty to compose electroacoustic music in this <a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/summer-programs/index/sonic-arts/">10-day workshop</a>. Participants will <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/sonic_arts_workshop_participant_recital_5039#.V2AdHucrJO1">perform a recital</a> at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, in Clonick Hall.</p> <h3>Baroque Performance Institute, June 19-July 3</h3> <p>Now in its 45th season, <a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/summer-programs/index/baroque-performance-institute/">the Baroque Performance Institute</a> is the premiere summer workshop focusing on baroque instruments and voice. The institute is open to musicians of any level of experience on baroque instruments or voice. It culminates in a <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/baroque_performance_institute_482#.V2AdOucrJO1">performance by participant chamber groups</a> from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, in Kulas Recital Hall.</p> <h3>Foresight Prep, June 19-July 30</h3> <p><a href="http://www.foresightprep.org/">Foresight Prep</a> is a pre-college program for high school students concerned about social and environmental issues. Six seminars will engage students in exploring their future as students, professionals, and changemakers, with relation to critical topics.</p> <h3>Camp STARR, June 21-24</h3> <p><a href="http://www.diversitycenterneo.org/school-youth/camp-starr/" target="_blank">Camp STARR</a> (Students Talking About Race Relations) is an intense four-day retreat in which high school students explore the past, present, and future of race relations in America.</p> <h3>Trumpet Workshop, June 21-July 1</h3> <p>The 10-day <a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/summer-programs/index/trumpet-workshop/">Trumpet Workshop</a> is for high school, college, professional, and amateur trumpet players and teachers who want to invest time in trumpet fundamentals, solo trumpet playing, and pedagogical skills. Participants will perform two concerts at 4 and 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, at First United Methodist Church.</p> <h3>Ohio Scottish Arts School, June 25-July 1</h3> <p><a href="http://ohioscottishartsschool.com/" target="_blank">The Ohio Scottish Arts School</a> provides comprehensive instruction in traditional arts of Highland dancing, fiddling, harping, piping, and drumming by nationally and internationally recognized teachers.</p> <h3>Organ Academy, June 26-July 1</h3> <p><a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/summer-programs/index/organists/">The Organ Academy</a> is for high school students considering undergraduate study in organ. Participants spend a week at the conservatory learning and performing on this expressive and imposing instrument. Academy participants will <a href="https://calendar.oberlin.edu/event/academy_for_high_school_organists_participant_recital_3762#.V2Adh-crJO1">perform solo works</a> at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 1, in Finney Chapel.</p> <h3>Credo Music Program for String Players and Pianists, July 10-30</h3> <p><a href="https://www.credomusic.org/oberlin/" target="_blank">String and piano students</a> ages 13-23 participate in chamber groups, masterclasses, large ensembles, and private lessons to grow as chamber music performers. The theme of the 2016 annual meeting is The Politics of Dissent: Satire, Sarcasm, and Spite in Civil Discourse. Featured speakers include Sophia McClennen and Rebecca Schuman.</p> <h3>Ohio-Meadville District Summer Institute, July 17-23</h3> <p>The Ohio-Meadville District Summer Institute (OMDSI) is an intergenerational week of fun and spiritual growth for Unitarian Universalists. The summer institute attracts the greatest number of participants of all the programs hosted at 91ֱ College.</p> <h3>Cooper Piano Festival, July 21-29</h3> <p>The Cooper Piano Festival begins at the close of the annual <a href="/cooper-competition">Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition</a>, which takes place July 14-23. Participants attend a week of master classes, performances, and forums and receive three private lessons while meeting other pianists of all ages. Classes, run by 91ֱ students and recent graduates, begin Monday, June 9. There is no cost, and no advance registration is required.</p> <p>Sessions for students entering first through fifth grade run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each weekday and cover the basic subjects for each grade. Session for students entering sixth through 12th grade run from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. These students have the option of studying physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, or any other subject. They are not required to be at the college for the full three hours.</p> <p>All classes will be held in King Building located on the northwest corner of College and Professor Streets.&nbsp; Children from any school district may attend, space permitting. WAVE ends Friday, August 15. WAVE focuses solely on academic subjects.
