The award was presented by President Carmen Twillie Ambar.</p> <p>Zwegat has served the 91ֱ community in many roles for nearly four decades. She began her career as Projects &amp; Special Events Coordinator and steadily rose to her current role as Director of Student Involvement and Orientation.</p> <p>Zwegat has had a profound and lasting impact on 91ֱ’s students. Through her leadership in New Student Orientation and Parents Weekend, she creates the first impression many students and their families have of 91ֱ. Zwegat also supports countless student groups, including the Student Finance Committee and dozens of student organizations, dedicating her time and insight to helping them navigate the college experience. Her advocacy, guidance, and genuine care have left a lasting mark on generations of Obies.</p> <p>A longtime 91ֱ resident, Zwegat has consistently built bridges between the college and the town through her work on events such as Folk Fest, Dandelion Romp, and Big Parade. She previously oversaw programming at the Apollo Theatre, striving to bring diverse, engaging events to the broader community. More recently, Zwegat has been a key organizer behind “Walking in a Winter Oberland,” a town-and-gown tradition that continues to grow in popularity. She has also been a longtime champion of WOBC-FM, working with students and community members to ensure the local radio station remains a vibrant, inclusive platform.</p> <p>Beyond her formal job duties, Zwegat is known across campus as a trusted advisor and generous colleague. Zwegat is also active in campus governance and programming, serving on several committees, including Finney and Assemblies, Conditions of Employment, and Student Employment Appreciation Week.</p> <p>Her colleagues repeatedly praised Zwegat’s steadfast positivity and humility. One nominator reflected: “She always says, ‘I’m just doing my job,’ but for someone who has dedicated close to 40 years to 91ֱ, it’s clear she’s doing far more than that. She exemplifies the YB Award spirit in everything she does.”</p> <p>Other colleagues shared:</p> <p><em>“Tina is a fierce advocate for our students. She celebrates their accomplishments and supports them during their struggles. </em></p> <p><em>“Her daily interactions with students are always positive. Many have thanked her for helping them find a sense of belonging and fulfillment here at 91ֱ.”</em></p> <p><em>&nbsp;“Whenever a new person is hired in our division Tina is the first to reach out. She makes sure they know they can come to her at any time, with any question.”</em></p> <p><em>“Tina’s institutional knowledge is immense. She knows who to call for anything, and she always makes time to help. Her advice is gold—because she’s done it all.” </em></p> <p><em>“During my first week, Tina made me feel seen, welcome, and appreciated. I hadn’t even found my office yet, but I knew I had someone in my corner.”</em></p> <p><em>“Tina truly lives and breathes 91ֱ. Her decisions reinforce the values and traditions this institution is famous for.”&nbsp;</em></p> <hr> <p>The YB Staff Award was established to honor the extraordinary service of the late Yeworkwha Belachew—“YB,” as she was affectionately known—who served 91ֱ in numerous roles for more than 35 years, most notably as ombudsperson and founder of the 91ֱ College Dialogue Center.</p> <p>First presented in 2016—to Belachew—the YB Award was established to recognize a non-faculty employee of the college or conservatory who demonstrates daily commitment and performance in advancing 91ֱ’s strategic goals through exemplary service.</p> <p>For more information about the YB Award and a complete list of past honorees, please visit the Department of Human Resources’ <a href="/node/72566">Awards and Recognition</a> page.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-subhead field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Longtime employee is a key first contact for new 91ֱ families and a steadfast supporter of student organizations.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2025-04-30T12:00:00Z">Wed, 04/30/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Office of Communications</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2551">Staff</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Scott Shaw</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/54486376372_e4a33952e8_k.jpg?itok=Smt4JPGt" width="760" height="555" alt="Portrait of smiling staff and president with award."> </div> Wed, 30 Apr 2025 13:44:22 +0000 mreed 492401 at Chet Arcaba Earns 2024 YB Award for Extraordinary Service /news/chet-arcaba-earns-2024-yb-award-extraordinary-service <span>Chet Arcaba Earns 2024 YB Award for Extraordinary Service</span> <span><span>eburnett</span></span> <span><time datetime="2024-05-06T11:29:57-04:00" title="Monday, May 6, 2024 - 11:29">Mon, 05/06/2024 - 11:29</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><a href="/node/30271">Chet Arcaba</a>, 91ֱ’s director of facilities stewardship, is the recipient of the 2024 <a href="/human-resources/awards-recognition">YB Staff Award</a> for extraordinary service, presented annually to an 91ֱ staff member.</p> <p>A 45-year employee at 91ֱ, Arcaba was honored by President <a href="/node/48561">Carmen Twillie Ambar</a> at a spring social for faculty and staff held May 6 at the Heisman Field House.</p> <p>Arcaba has served in numerous roles on campus since his hire in 1979, among them lead data control clerk, equipment technician, network technician, and telephone manager. This was evident at the conference, where Africatown community members and 91ֱ students attended and warmly supported each other's presentations.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Presberg appreciated having the opportunity to learn from those at the conference who are considered foundational figures in environmental justice.</p> <p>“As a student interested in environmental justice work, being able to learn from their wisdom, experience, and advice was excellent,” says Presberg. “Beyond this, being able to participate in the academic conference with our partners from Africatown, have them hear us present, support them in their presentation, and just learn alongside each other was an incredible and unique experience.”</p> <p>The group’s participation at the conference was supported by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the <a href="/node/25351">Environmental Studies Program</a>, the Blank fund, and a grant from the Consortium on High Achievement and Success.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-12-09T12:00:00Z">Mon, 12/09/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="text-content field field--name-field-intro-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Environmental studies students presented research, received a third-place award, and met the “father of environmental justice.”</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2410">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2358">Undergraduate Research</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=3499">Climate Action</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25351">Environmental Studies and Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-faculty field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/jay-fiskio" hreflang="und">Jay Fiskio</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/environmental-studies" hreflang="und">Environmental Studies and Science</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">(From left) Robert Bullard, distinguished professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University, Santiago Roman, Eli Presberg, Beverly Wright, founder and executive director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, Imani Badillo, Zimmy Chu.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Courtesy of Janet Fiskio</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/envi-stud-award.jpg?itok=Vn792qhB" width="760" height="570" alt="students standing together, smiling at the seventh annual HBCU Climate Change Conference."> </div> Mon, 09 Dec 2019 19:57:05 +0000 hhempste 180891 at Stamps Scholarship Awards Students Who Make Global and Local Impact /news/stamps-scholarship-awards-students-who-make-global-and-local-impact <span>Stamps Scholarship Awards Students Who Make Global and Local Impact</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2019-09-25T15:26:33-04:00" title="Wednesday, September 25, 2019 - 15:26">Wed, 09/25/2019 - 15:26</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>This year, three students from the Class of 2023 were honored with scholarships from the <a href="https://www.stampsfoundation.org">Stamps Family Charitable Foundation</a> (SFCF) and 91ֱ College. Each year, up to five incoming students are awarded $10,000 annually for a total award of $40,000 for eight semesters. Held this year at the University of Houston, CUSPI is the largest college-level poetry slam in the world.</p> <p>This year, OSLAM placed 11th out of 60 teams—the group’s best finish yet. OSLAM President and comparative American studies major Hanne Williams-Baron ’19 notes the artistic risks the 91ֱ team took that bolstered the group’s position in the standings.</p> <p>“One of the most exciting parts of the competition this year was throwing an experimental group poem at the end of our semifinals bout,” says Williams-Baron. “We had the poets sit on the floor of the stage and face each other. We also incorporated singing and choreography into the performance. In taking that kind of artistic risk, we changed the energy of the slam and ended up scoring a perfect 30.’’</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-right"><img alt="91ֱ's poetry slam team" height="338" src="/sites/default/files/content/oslam19.png" width="450"> <figcaption>91ֱ’s poetry slam team, OSLAM.<br> Photo credit: Hanne Williams-Baron ’19.</figcaption> </figure> <p>Williams-Baron says that, aside from the competition, another reason OSLAM competes at the invitational is that it gives insight into how schools in various regions perceive poetry, performance, and social justice.</p> <p>“It's really cool to see the ways that other schools are thinking about poetic intention and the politics of performance. We get to observe the different environmental influences that make each team‘s poetry unique. It feels like a privilege to meet and share poetry with so many other extraordinarily talented poets from across the world.”</p> <p>As a graduating senior, Williams-Baron is looking forward to seeing how the group of mostly first-year students grows.</p> <p>“I think OSLAM sticks out from other teams because of the level of intention, nuance, and collaboration we put into our poems. We think critically about every single image and reference we use, and we think a lot about how to take care of an audience while also challenging them. I can only imagine how powerful OSLAM will be by this time next year.”</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2019-04-22T12:00:00Z">Mon, 04/22/2019 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2379">Student Life</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2355">Student Organizations</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2410">Students</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2373">Awards and Honors</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">OSLAM President Hanne Williams-Baron ’19 at Love Slam in March 2019. </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Chris Schmucki '22</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/image/hanne-oslam_chrisschmucki-5-lpr.jpg?itok=Pq74A_FE" width="760" height="570" alt="Hanne Williams-Baron ’19 at Love Slam 2019"> </div> Mon, 22 Apr 2019 19:03:38 +0000 hhempste 159891 at Economics Team Wins First Place at Business Case Competition /news/economics-team-wins-first-place-business-case-competition <span>Economics Team Wins First Place at Business Case Competition</span> <span><span>hhempste</span></span> <span><time datetime="2019-02-27T14:00:32-05:00" title="Wednesday, February 27, 2019 - 14:00">Wed, 02/27/2019 - 14:00</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>91ֱ College was awarded first place in the Seventh Annual Peoples Bank Undergraduate Business Case Competition on Saturday, February 9, 2019, at Marietta College.</p> <p>The 91ֱ team bested 13 other schools to garner the first place honor.
