How have you adapted instruction to a remote learning environment? How have students shifted how they learn and participate? What’s changed, what’s stayed the same, or what has come as a pleasant surprise?

Please share an example or anecdote that addresses one of these areas.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance Holly Handman-Lopez shares how, even in the challenging circumstances of these times, students have been able to find ways to express themselves and stay connected to their creative community. Through a collective screen dance project, 17 dance majors and minors continue to pursue creative projects because, “Learning how to keep going even when the ground beneath your feet is shifting—this is what artists do,” says Handman-Lopez.

From Handman:

Moving with other dancers, rehearsing in preparation for concerts, and performing for audiences—these are the things dancers love to do. This semester, our students lost opportunities to experience the joys and challenges of creating and performing new choreographies. Senior majors who needed to complete their capstone projects have had to revise their plans numerous times as circumstances changed. Live performances with sizable casts scheduled for various campus venues have been reimagined into screen dances and other interdisciplinary projects. One senior dance major chose to work with two small groups of students who are quarantining together; one pod has three dancers, the other has two. In this instance, what had been a sextet scheduled for performance in Fairchild Chapel will become a screen dance featuring a trio and a duet.

In an effort to support our students and to give them a way to express themselves and stay connected to their creative community, I devised a collective screen dance project inspired by the Exquisite Corps by Mitchel Rose of Ohio State University. His project featured many superstars of contemporary dance. We are featuring superstars of 91ֱ, 17 dance majors and minors who continue to pursue their creative projects, no matter how many times they are thwarted or redirected by our ever-changing circumstances. Learning how to keep going even when the ground beneath your feet is shifting—this is what artists do.

Despite time zone differences, intermittent Wi-Fi, and quarantine challenges, every single student who signed on to the project persevered and contributed a unique clip to the piece. My only request was that they begin where their classmate had ended and keep it within a short timeframe. Each student designed their segment and recruited a camera person or made it work on their own. Our student editor, fourth-year Clarissa Heart, connected the clips seamlessly, and TIMARA’s Tom Lopez created the sound score.

I’m excited to have it completed for International Dance Day on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, and I’m so pleased that dance can offer something to our community during this time of separation.

Campus News

Tue, 04/28/2020 - It was an exciting time for the theater major, who’s production in 91ֱ’s Kander Theater launched the fourth annual New Works Festival.

The festival, which reflects the theater department’s mission to work with students to develop their own material, was born out of a need to codify a process for all of the material that students produce, as well as publicize their productions. Theater majors submit material for the festival a year in advance. This year’s festival offers four theatrical performances that will debut throughout the academic year.

“Each year’s offerings are always so unique and different,” says Eric Steggall, managing director of theater, dance, and opera. “This year’s group has an amazing depth and grasp of the particular materials they are presenting, and so far they have been amazing experiences.”

In The Size of a Fist, Papa and his daughter, Bee, dwell in an abandoned nuclear fallout shelter from the 1950s amidst books and sparse furnishings. The question of whether or not the pair will learn to live together hangs in the air.

“The Size of a Fist is a sci-fi dystopia about climate change and what it means to survive,” explains Kelly, who received inspiration for the play after reading Waiting for Godot in high school and decided to adapt the existentialist themes with her own spin. Initially, a one-act play, Kelly expanded the piece into a full-length production during fall 2018.

“It is a surreal feeling to see my words transformed by the designers and actors, but that’s also why I love performing arts,” says Kelly, who also worked on several mainstage, opera, and student-run shows as a stage manager during her time at 91ֱ. “It’s been lovely experimenting with different creative choices. The show is by no means in its final form.”

The celebration of student work continues April 2 to 5, 2020, with In the Eleventh Hour written and conceived by Jaris Owens and Miyah Byers.

See more photos from The Size of a Fist on 91ֱ Flickr.

Campus News

Fri, 11/29/2019 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

Performing Arts

Theater

Eric Steggall

Theater

Off

false

Chris Schmucki ’22

Photo Gallery

 View photo gallery

<img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/content/photo-gallery-slides/image/4newworksfestival.chris.jpg" width="760" height="570" alt="A girls looks sad while laying in bed. The presentation will focus on the music and its complexity, with dance and music as equal partners of expression.

Artistic Director Adenike Sharpley, 91ֱ’s artist in residence in the departments of Africana studies and dance, describes the show as a retrospective of her experiences growing up to the soundtrack of jazz pioneers such as Horace Silver, Eric Dolphy, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis. “This show is a tribute to my childhood and my father,” she says. “My father was an avid jazz fan with an album collection that was well known on the east side of Cleveland. The record collection became the envy of someone, and at one point 75 percent of it was stolen, but the impression the music made on my life has lasted my whole life.”

Sharpley explains that classical music on the African continent is embodied in the different drum orchestras that represent different regions and ethnic groups. “From that perspective, I want to highlight jazz as an African classical music. As descendants from Africa, ‘New World’ Africans created and reworked traditionally western classical instruments into a translation of their experience and soul. Miles Davis’ music is a great example of this music.”

The show will feature students and alumni, including vocalist Che Gonzalez ’96 and noted trumpet player Kevin Louis ’99, a New Orleans native. After graduating from the conservatory, Louis went on to receive his MA from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York in 2001. He has released at least 10 recordings since 1997, with his most recent titled “Music is my Religion” (2011). He has toured the country and around the world and has appeared on several television networks as a performer.

The show’s student dancers include Dance Diaspora members Kendra Farrakhan ’15, Kara Mahon ’15, Donnay Edmund ’16, and Sophie Umazi Mvurya ’16, and guests Cassandra Brown ’17, and Rachael Pillot ’17. Musicians for the show include Dance Diaspora members Zaire Darden ’15 on drums, Caylen Bryant ’16 on cello, and Daniel Spearman ’16 on grand and electric piano, and student guests Lawrence Galloway ’15 on trombone, and Jordan McBride ’16 on bass. The show will also welcome to the stage community member Gordon Taylor on guitar. Francisca “Kika” Chaidez-Gutierrez ’05 is stage manager.

“My Miles” will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 11, in Warner Main Space in Warner Center.
