In that position I [directed students to medical rooms], obtained medical information and vital signs, administered immunizations, provided phone triage, etc. Although I still perform in this role after accepting the clinical coordinator position, I also took on additional responsibilities on the administrative side of things. I do the office inventory, ordering, budgeting, planning, problem solving, collaborating with other departments and facilities, and other odds and ends. I never knew my nursing degree would take me in this direction, but I actually really enjoy the combination of clinical and administrative duties.

How many years at 91ֱ? Five and a half.

What are your hobbies? I married my highschool sweetheart and we are blessed with three awesome little boys, ages 6, 4, and 1, and a crazy pup. Most of my free time I am hanging out with my family, building forts, having dance parties, doing experiments, playing with action figures, exploring outside, playing hockey (I have officially become a hockey mom!), watching movies, eating ice cream, and cleaning up messes...lots of messes!

When I do sneak a moment to myself I enjoy catching up with friends, wandering around any store, driving with the windows down and the music turned up, painting, journaling, taking pictures, or relaxing with a hot cup of tea and a show on Netflix.

Favorite food? My mom's chicken paprikash

Favorite Quote? "Eucharisteo." I guess it's more of a favorite word that I try to live by. They are ready for a YeoFit yoga class.

YeoFit is an initiative started in 2018 that offers a wide range of free drop-in fitness classes for people in the 91ֱ community. Besides yoga, there are also TRX, spinning, jump rope, cardio boxing, water aerobic, strength training and Zumba classes. All of the classes take place in modern, well-lit rooms in the Shanks Wellness Center that opened on Aug. 28, 2018.

YeoFit’s mission is to energize, empower, and engage the 91ֱ community through fitness and fun. It defines well-being as it is linked to both mental and physical health. The nuance between health and wellness is that wellness is to develop healthy habits both for your body and mind.

Besides having the fitness rooms, the center also has a space called MindSpa, located in room H111. There you can find stress balls, comfy pillows, meditation guides, a Zen garden, and so much more related to mindfulness. Students can reserve a 30-minute session through the YeoFit website.

This semester, YeoFit continues its mission in wellness and has offered a new seven-week session called Healthy Habits for Optimal Health, taught by Michaela Puterbaugh ’17. After graduation, Puterbaugh attended Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and she’s returned to 91ֱ with her health coach certification.

“A certified health coach is basically someone who works with people one-on-one or in a group setting to improve diet and lifestyle — it's never to prescribe a diet or anything like that,” says Puterbaugh. “It's more about just working individually with someone to really try to uncover the root of what's going on and then take small actionable steps to get to wherever they want to get to.”

As a former Lacrosse player at 91ֱ, Puterbaugh grew up learning health and nutrition. She sees having a healthy diet and lifestyle is a powerful tool — it can “lead you to feeling vibrant and energized.”

In her session, she covers topics such as blue zone, a study of the longest living people around the world, and intuitive eating, which is a mindful approach to eating, stress management.

“I thought that it could be a really helpful resource for students who are in this high- stress environment where health and wellbeing isn't always their priority,” she says.

Campus News

Fri, 02/28/2020 - 12:00

Carson Li ’20

Health and Wellness

Student Life

Students

The exterior of the Patricia ’63 & Merrill ’61 Shanks Health and Wellness Center.

Off

false

Jennifer Manna

Fri, 28 Feb 2020 20:29:00 +0000 hhempste 187451 at Health and Wellness Symposium Honors 91ֱ’s 'Movement Detective’ /news/health-and-wellness-symposium-honors-oberlins-movement-detective Health and Wellness Symposium Honors 91ֱ’s 'Movement Detective’ anagy Sun, 02/12/2017 - 12:16

Dance Instructor Deborah Vogel lives by the motto that “education is key to injury prevention.” A self-proclaimed movement detective, Vogel looks for movement patterns as clues for pain or problems an individual is feeling in the body.

Throughout her 27-year teaching career at 91ֱ, she has strived to make students across the college and conservatory healthier and more optimal in their performance. In honor of her retirement in December, the dance department has organized a weekend seminar on health and wellness on November 18 and 19. The program welcomes back to campus seven dance alumni, all of whom have studied with Vogel and have forged divergent careers based on health and wellbeing. Each will give a presentation on techniques and career advice.

“I loved the idea of a health and wellness symposium because I have students who have gone on to do such great things,” Vogel says. “I’m always trying to integrate health and wellness education. My goal is to give them the tools, the skills, and the information necessary to make positive change in their bodies and in their lives. As a ‘whole’ person, you can’t have one aspect all by itself. You’ve got to look at your physical health, mental and emotional wellbeing, and your spiritual health.”

For the majority of her career, Vogel has been teaching courses in body re-education and alignment (functional anatomy), physical wellness for musicians, dance conditioning, and introduction to somatic studies. She is a specialist in neuromuscular education—a focus she began as a young dancer just starting her career in New York City. She trained with Irene Dowd, a neuromuscular specialist who still practices in New York.

“In the early part of my career when I was in New York, I worked in a large sports and dance medicine clinic. Some people would come in with an acute physical problem, but they had no idea that they had any control over the amount of muscular tension in their body. There is this disconnect, it’s like, ‘this is my body, but we’re enemies.’ And that’s where it gets fun because I get to play movement detective, and I always try to find a way into their perspective to give them a few other tools to create change or open up to a new belief about their body. Our bodies are plastic. The brain doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined. There’s so much potential in creating health.”

At 91ֱ, Vogel has worked to bridge that disconnect for musicians and athletes. “Frankly, I wish we could make this information available to all first-years,” she says, noting the deleterious effects of stress and anxiety.

In her conservatory class this semester, Vogel marvels at the transformation some of her students are making. Dana Johnson, a fourth-year violin performance major, has been working on adjusting her pelvic tilt to improve her overall posture, as well as stretches that focus on her hip flexors, or iliopsoas.

“Musicians do an immense amount of specific muscle movement each day, just like a tennis player or dancer, and I think that aspect of our craft—the athletic—is often neglected. It is so important, though, for our physical wellness to be in check to prevent injury and allow ourselves to play in the best way, most efficient way, for our bodies,” says Johnson, who is from Ann Arbor, Michigan.

“We talk about the importance of hydration, do exercises to warm up and integrate both sides of the brain, and also explore the different states of mind we can occupy, and how we can use ‘state-changers’ to help optimize focus and learning capability. So much of this information I can use as a musician—whether it's a specific violin-related stretch, or preparing mentally for a practice session—but similarly, all of what we're learning is applicable to my life on a larger scale away from music. It's made me come to see how important it is to take care of my mind and body and what a huge difference that can make for my emotions, my learning, my focus, my art, and my overall well-being and functionality.”

All events for the health and wellness symposium will take place in Warner Center, and the program is open to the campus and community. Alumni presenters include Robert Bettmann ‘97, Lee Fogel ’07, Maya Meunzer ’16, Dana Kotler, MD ’00, Isabel Roth ’11, Sarah Van der Horst ’10, PT, DPT, and Jane Vorburger ’03.

“They all have interesting stories. For each, dance and movement and the focus on health and wellness has always been there,” Vogel says. “I’m asking them to talk about their career, then reflect upon their education at 91ֱ, and share any words of wisdom or advice to current students. I’m really curious to hear what they have to say.”

Vogel says she will continue to work on her craft after retirement. “I love teaching. It defines a large part of who I am, even in my parenting. Now that I have grandchildren, I look forward to being the wise matriarch of the family.”

Campus News

Mon, 11/14/2016 - 12:00

Amanda Nagy

Health and Wellness

Career Exploration & Development

Dance

Dance

Dance Instructor Deborah Vogel.

Off

false

Dale Preston ’83

Sun, 12 Feb 2017 17:16:03 +0000 anagy 34611 at What You Need to Know About 91ֱ’s Tobacco-Free Policy /news/what-you-need-know-about-oberlins-tobacco-free-policy What You Need to Know About 91ֱ’s Tobacco-Free Policy Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:18

In 2014, both the Student Senate and General Faculty passed a Tobacco-Free Policy that prohibits the use of all tobacco products by students, staff, faculty, and visitors on campus property. The policy is scheduled to go into effect July 1, 2016.

Here, we share answers to several questions many students, staff, and faculty have posed regarding the policy to help keep all of those within our community informed.

What exactly is the 91ֱ Tobacco-Free policy?

91ֱ’s Tobacco-Free Policy prohibits the use of all tobacco products by students, staff, faculty and visitors in the following areas:

All buildings, facilities, properties, and vehicles owned or operated by 91ֱ College

All campus grounds, including at outdoor athletics events and programs held on college property

All campus facilities or on campus grounds being used for private events

For the purpose of this policy, tobacco use is defined as:

Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, clove cigarettes, hookahs, or any other tobacco product

Using any form of smokeless tobacco, including dip, chew, snuff, or snus

Who created the policy?

The policy is the creation of the Tobacco Committee, a subcommittee of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Committee (ATOD) comprised of students, staff, and faculty.

ATOD suggested 91ֱ College consider becoming tobacco-free in 2010 based on the recommendations of the American College Health Association, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and national trends among colleges and universities. In collaboration with the Lorain County Health Department, the Tobacco Committee assessed campus readiness to become tobacco-free through discussions, surveys, and meetings over a two-year period. Support for a tobacco-free campus among students, staff, and faculty grew during this time.

Why was this policy adopted?

Tobacco use is a health and wellness issue, a social justice issue, and an environmental sustainability issue. 91ֱ College adopted this policy because it is committed to addressing these and other important topics.

Are there any exemptions from the policy?

The policy does not apply to private property or areas of the city of 91ֱ in the vicinity of campus grounds, only property explicitly owned by the college. Tobacco products are permitted for use in Tappan Square, except during public events.

Portable electronic vaporizers such as e-cigarettes are not considered tobacco products under the policy. Portable electronic vaporizers are permitted for outdoor use at least 30 feet from campus buildings. They are not permitted for indoor use, nor are they permitted for use during outdoor public events such as Commencement.

The use of tobacco products in Tappan Square and the outdoor use of portable electronic vaporizers will be reevaluated in 2018.

How will people know about the policy?

Every member of the 91ֱ College community is responsible for observing the policy and encouraging a tobacco-free campus. If you see anyone not complying with the policy, you are asked to respectfully explain to that individual that tobacco use is not permitted on campus. Direct them to <del>go.oberlin.edu/tobacco-free</del> for more information.

Additionally, green signs that classify the college as tobacco-free have been posted by exterior doors of most campus buildings.

What if I need help quitting smoking?

The focus of this policy is on providing education and cessation opportunities. Therefore, tobacco cessation programs and support have been made available to all 91ֱ College students, staff, and faculty.

Student Health Services and the Counseling Center offer Quit Kits that contain literature about cessation as well as oral fixation tools that can help you through the quitting process. Student Health Services can provide medical and counseling support for students who want to quit smoking. Members or the Counseling Center have been trained in cessation support.

Cessation support is available to all staff through the CIGNA Health plan. Patches and gum are provided free to enrollees. Staff and faculty are encouraged to contact human resources at 440-775-8180 to find out what other medications and therapies are covered.

Additional information about medications and support options for quitting tobacco use can be found on <del>this web page</del>.

Has the college ever implemented policies like this before?

In 1993, the college adopted a policy that limited smoking by students, staff, faculty, and visitors to outdoor areas on campus that are 30 feet away from building entrances, exits, and smoking vents. Smoking had previously been banned at all times in all campus buildings and college-owned vehicles.

For even more information about 91ֱ’s Tobacco-Free Policy, including more frequently asked questions, visit <del>go.oberlin.edu/tobacco-free</del>.

Campus News

Mon, 06/06/2016 - 12:00

Lisa Gulasy

Policies & Procedures

Health and Wellness

Off

false
Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:18:55 +0000 Anonymous 13756 at Tobacco Cessation Resources for Students, Faculty, and Staff /news/tobacco-cessation-resources-students-faculty-and-staff Tobacco Cessation Resources for Students, Faculty, and Staff Anonymous (not verified) Mon, 11/07/2016 - 13:19

Thursday, November 19, 2015, marks the 43rd observance of the Great American SmokeOut. The event started in a small town in Massachusetts. Since 1977, the Great American SmokeOut has been branded and promoted by the American Cancer Society on the third Thursday of November. The college promoted the Great American SmokeOut for the first time in 2010 and has sponsored events and programs each year since.

This year’s observance has special significance. Since 2010, the Alcohol and Other Drugs Committee has been assessing the campus’ readiness to become tobacco free. Last year, Student Senate and the General Faculty voted to make 91ֱ a tobacco-free campus beginning July 1, 2016.

The Tobacco Free Implementation Committee, composed of two faculty, three staff, and four students, was appointed by President Krislov last spring and is charged with overseeing the transition from the current policy (no smoking indoors and 30 feet from doors, vents, and windows) to the new policy.

The committee has worked with Student Health Services and the Office of Human Resources to identify and make provision for access to cessation resources for students, faculty, and staff who may want to quit. For example, on Tuesday, November 24, the committee and Human Resources are hosting a brown bag lunch and information session on the new policy and cessation resources available to faculty and staff.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. People who stop smoking while they are young get the greatest benefits from quitting. Those who quit during their 30s may avoid most of the risks due to tobacco use. But even smokers who quit after age 50 largely reduce their risk of dying early from smoking related diseases and illness.

If you use tobacco, now is a good time to quit or think about quitting.

For more information about the Tobacco Free Implementation Committee and the tobacco policy that will take effect July 1, 2016, see this webpage.

Campus News

Thu, 11/19/2015 - 12:00

Ehrai Adams

Policies & Procedures

Human Resources

Health and Wellness

Off

false
Mon, 07 Nov 2016 18:19:24 +0000 Anonymous 14306 at
