He served as chair of the Composition Department for many years and directed the InterArts Program, which later evolved into TIMARA (Technology in Music and Related Arts).</p> <p>“Randy was ever a vibrant presence a presence that inspired generations of students, animated faculty discussion, rejoiced in music and the life of the mind, and was born of a deep understanding of the human experience,” says Steven Plank, 91ֱ�� professor of musicology. “He was legendary for his love of conversation, conversations that roamed over vast swaths of the intellectual landscape and then easily pivoted to last night's baseball game. His greatest gift was his capacity to be a generous and caring friend.”</p> <p>Coleman championed new music throughout his career – launching concert series like Contemporary Focus and New Directions, which brought together music, dance, film, and theater. In 1985, he developed a set of eight rotating technical modules for first- and second-year composition students – an approach that emphasized peer learning and helped define 91ֱ��’s innovative spirit.</p> <p>His compositions were performed widely in the U.S. and Europe by ensembles including the Boston Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Xenakis Ensemble, Eighth Blackbird, and many more. Multiple dance companies choreographed and performed his works, including ODC San Francisco, Cleveland Repertory Theatre, Cincinnati Dance Company, and GroundWorks.</p> <p>Coleman had a deep love for collaborative projects and worked on theatrical productions like The Oresteia and The Donner Party with director Herbert Blau and the experimental theatre company Kraken—whose members included Bill Irwin and Julie Taymor.</p> <p>He was a founding chair of the Society of Composers, Inc. (formerly the American Society of University Composers), and held residencies at institutions across the globe—from the University of Michigan and Yale to the Doge Palace in Venice and the Rockefeller Center in Bellagio, Italy.</p> <p>Originally from Charlottesville, Virginia, Coleman studied at the University of Virginia and later earned graduate degrees from Northwestern University. He was the 11th dean of 91ֱ�� Conservatory, arriving in summer 1999 after serving as dean of the Lawrence University Conservatory.</p> <p>Under Dodson’s tenure at 91ֱ��, the conservatory founded the Community Music School, which continues to provide an invaluable link between 91ֱ��’s campus and community more than two decades later.</p> <p>In 2004 Dodson became provost of New England Conservatory, after which he also served for a time at Boston University. Early in his career, he lived for two decades in Canada, where he was a teacher and administrator at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and an 11-year member of the Vaghy Quartet.</p> <p>He earned bachelor’s and master’s degree from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studied under Janos Starker.</p> <p>In a 2000 story in the <em>91ֱ�� Alumni Magazine</em>, Dodson celebrated 91ֱ��’s distinctive combination of a world-class college and conservatory. “Cherish that fact and make it part of your lives,” he told students. “Your mission here is to learn, not only pursuing mastery of the art and craft of music and seeking the wellsprings of your creativity, but by learning more broadly where we have been and where we might go, a quest that will immeasurably enrich your development as musicians and as members of the human community.”</p> <p>In retirement, Dodson served as a volunteer fireman in Olive, New York. He died October 15, 2023. He chairs multiple committees at the Brookings Institution and holds key roles with numerous other nonprofits.</p> <p>Hymes is a double-degree graduate of 91ֱ�� with majors in <a href="/node/3371">mathematics</a>, <a href="/node/42011">music education</a>, and <a href="/node/3256">vocal studies</a>. The show is also meant to be an inclusive space that rejects the norms and traditions of the fashion industry in regard to what body types should be. </p> <p>Because next year’s show is typically inspired by the previous year, planning begins soon after the last model has left the stage. In reviewing the recent show, committee members discuss what worked and what didn’t, and general ideas for next year’s show are also noted. Planning momentum picks up shortly after fall semester begins. </p> <p>A theme represents each BHM fashion show and often reflects the attire models will demonstrate. In 2018, <a href="https://flic.kr/s/aHsmem22ig" target="_blank">Sankofa Remix’d: Reclaiming My Fly</a> featured African-influenced clothing. In 2020, <a href="https://flic.kr/s/aHsmLAVmvd" target="_blank">Look Black At It: 50 Years of Fashion</a> gave audience members a glimpse at some of the unique styles that influenced the fashion industry and the nation during the last 50 years. And in 2021, models adorned pillows, hazmat suits, and sleepwear for <a href="https://flic.kr/s/aHsmUzFsUx" target="_blank">Quarantine Couture</a>. This year showcased models in a variety of African-influenced prints and formal styles in <a href="https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjzHAQa" target="_blank">BLACK LIFE RELOADED</a>.</p> <p>And as with every BHM fashion show, audience members not only cheer for fashion, but for the students, faculty, and staff wearing it. This year, about 34 91ֱ�� community members strutted the walkway.</p> <p>“It’s an event where students representing many parts of campus participate,” explains Candice Raynor, director and faculty in residence of <a href="/ahh" target="_blank">Afrikan Heritage House</a>. “Whether it's modeling or performing, you have both the conservatory and the college, student-athletes, performing arts students, STEM students, visual arts students, and mixes of those groups participating.</p> <p>“I think the event is popular because it's a fun and an interesting way to celebrate Black History Month and Black cultures at 91ֱ��,” continues Raynor. “There is always a lot to be learned from the show as far as Black culture and Black contributions to fashion and pop culture in general.” </p> <p>We continue our photo tour with a secret marriage in Hall Auditorium, a benefit for Ukraine at First United Methodist Church of 91ֱ��, art study in the Allen Memorial Art Museum, poetry reading at the ‘Sco, a historic wintery win for the men’s lacrosse team at the Austin E. As a small office with a big charge, we’re all involved in each of those steps in some way, but I’d say my work focuses primarily on the back-of-house responsibilities—coordination of our office’s efforts, project management, and process implementation. </p> <p><strong>What do you enjoy most about your job?</strong> Two things come to mind when I think about what I enjoy most. The first is variety—there is such a wide variety of things that we need to accomplish, no two days are the same. It keeps things very interesting and challenging. The second would be interacting with prospective students. They are the reason we do this work, to find those students most excited about and capable of joining the 91ֱ�� community. It gives you pride in the institution and your work to see their excitement, and it feels wonderful to help such bright and gifted students realize 91ֱ�� is a good fit for them.</p> <p><strong>What do you think most people would be surprised to learn about the 91ֱ�� Conservatory of Music?</strong> Possibly the focus on undergraduate students, as that’s pretty rare in our field, especially for institutions of this caliber. But also, possibly its history as the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the country. I say that because nothing about 91ֱ�� feels dated.</p> <p><strong>Year after year I am amazed by 91ֱ��'s talented student body. Is it the same for you? </strong>Absolutely. They are an incredible group of people. If anyone needs reminding of that, just attend a concert, performance, or presentation.</p> <p><strong>What events, places, classes, etc. do you encourage new conservatory students to take advantage of during their time at 91ֱ��?</strong> The bike path is such a great asset on a sunny day. The reservoir and nature trail are beautiful places for a run. Go see a movie at the Apollo—I still remember the glow of the neon sign outside my hotel window when I visited campus as a prospective student. Take a language class. Learn to scuba dive for Winter Term, or do something else unexpected and amazing.</p> <p><strong>What was the most memorable 91ֱ�� performance you attended?</strong> Probably the performance a few years ago of Dvořák Serenade for Winds. It’s one of my favorite pieces, and it was great to see it performed together by both faculty and students.</p> <p><strong>Do you have any hidden talents?</strong> I can recall song lyrics a very long time after learning them. Kind of like a vocalist, but without the ability to sing them.</p> <p><strong>Do you have a favorite movie?</strong> Anything with Goldie Hawn.</p> <p><strong>What's your favorite place in 91ֱ��?</strong> Home, it’s where the heart is.</p> <p><strong>Favorite childhood memory?</strong> The time spent with my family in the Outer Banks—bike rides with my siblings to the corner store for candy, hanging out at the fish docks, fishing for crab with a chicken neck, reading about pirates, and learning to love the ocean.</p> <p><strong>Hobbies?</strong> It feels like my hobby is collecting hobbies—reef keeping, disc golf, Legos. But my real hobby is scuba diving. Everything from here on out is scuba.</p> <p><strong>Best vacation ever?</strong> Bonaire. The reef is healthy, the diving is easy and spectacular, and the pace moves wonderfully slow.</p> <p><strong>Any recent achievements you would like to tell us about?</strong> I recently completed training in the use of a more advanced diving technology: closed circuit rebreather. It seems more akin to space travel than scuba equipment and provides the ability to stay underwater longer at deeper depths. As much as I love diving the reef, it’s the shipwrecks in the cold depths of the Great Lakes that are most exhilarating. I have some goals in mind in those waters and I’m looking forward to the journey.</p> <p><strong>Nickname(s)? </strong>Scuba Josh, of course. I have offices in <a href="/robertson-hall" target="_blank">Robertson Hall</a> (room 123) and at the 91ֱ�� Conservatory’s <a href="/community-music-school" target="_blank">Community Music School</a> (CMS).</p> <p><strong>Job title(s)?</strong> Director of the CMS and Associate Professor of Community Engagement at the college. </p> <p><strong>How many years have you been at 91ֱ��?</strong> Since 2007</p> <p><strong>What does your job at the Community Music School (CMS) entail?</strong> Pretty much everything except for the billing and bookkeeping—those are done by my assistant Jeanne Rosecrans. My duties include all the details of keeping the program running, hiring teachers, placing students with teachers, building and overseeing all programs, writing grants, cultivating individual donors, putting on fundraising events, in-house concerts, outreach concerts and much more! I am lucky though, to have great help from other departments in the conservatory and college.</p> <p><strong>What exactly is the CMS?</strong> This is the 20th anniversary of the CMS. It stands for 91ֱ�� Community Music School, and it is exactly what the name says. We have private lessons and music classes for anyone in the 91ֱ�� community and beyond who are interested in learning music. Our youngest students are toddlers and our oldest is 98! We offer scholarship assistance to those who qualify. A big part of our mission is to serve all students despite financial resources.</p> <p><strong>What do you enjoy most about your work at CMS?</strong> Watching our students perform in recitals and the strength that it takes to do so is, in my mind, akin to being in the Olympics! All the work that it takes to run a school is rewarded when I watch our students perform.</p> <p><strong>What is one thing you would want people to know about the Community Music School?</strong> Our school is for everyone no matter your age, economics or level. All you have to have is an interest in music! </p> <p><strong>Did your family play a role in your work?</strong> My mother was a violinist and a well-known teacher of children in the Boston area. When she passed away in 2014, my father, brothers, family, and friends raised money to establish an endowed fund in her memory. It is called the Aideen N. Zeitlin Memorial Fund and it generates one full scholarship for a CMS student annually. We are continuing to collect funds in the hope of establishing a second scholarship in her name.</p> <p><strong>What instrument do you play?</strong> I am a violist. I love teaching the viola. My students bring tremendous joy to my life! I spent a large part of my earlier career performing.</p> <p><strong>Favorite movie?</strong> <em>Dr. Zhivago</em>. I guess I’m a romantic at heart. I also love the photography of the beautiful, snowy landscape scenes.</p> <p><strong>Favorite childhood memory?</strong> When I started violin lessons at age 5, it was in a big group. We had a holiday concert each year and my memory from those concerts was rows of tables in a school cafeteria covered with cookies, brownies, and cakes. The sugar, the colors, and the shapes were a child’s dream! I am careful now to always celebrate after our recitals.</p> <p><strong>Best vacation ever?</strong> I grew up in Boston and each summer my family would go to the beach on Cape Cod. Help coordinate the support services that make for a successful event.</p> <p><strong>How many years at 91ֱ��?</strong> 15 1/2</p> <p><strong>Have you always worked in this department? </strong>No. I started in the Facilities Operations Office, where one of the responsibilities in that position was “keeper of the Commencement/Reunion Weekend bible.” I had to keep an accurate book of all of the work orders needed for CRW. It was a lot of fun to help coordinate every single event for the campus. </p> <p><strong>As a member of the Concert Production Office how many events would you say you are involved with in a given school year?</strong> I schedule 400 to 500 performances and thousands of rehearsals each year. </p> <p><strong>How do you manage it all?</strong> I can only do one thing at a time... But I do it quickly. </p> <p><strong>Favorite 91ֱ�� performance/event attended?</strong> I particularly enjoy the student recitals. I don't go to many, but I pop in and watch the live streams frequently. </p> <p><strong>Do you have any hidden talents?</strong> I have a master’s degree in zoology. I really enjoy building terrariums and fish tank setups for my herpetology/fish. I’m amazing at growing rhubarb, but I don’t like to eat it. My family gets to enjoy it. I also bake a mean brownie.</p> <p><strong>Favorite event space on campus?</strong> I think Warner Concert Hall is just beautiful—the organ is gorgeous.</p> <p><strong>Any recent achievements you would like to tell us about?</strong> Does adulting through the pandemic count? Seriously though, it’s been a rough couple of years. We have two young children—4 and 6 years old—whom we homeschooled last year. I am so proud of how my family has held up through the challenges we have faced. None of it has been easy, but we are blessed to have each other. </p> <p><strong>Favorite childhood memory?</strong> Growing up on a small farm just outside of 91ֱ��. We grew and processed so much of our own food. We were preppers long before I knew what that was. </p> <p><strong>Best vacation ever?</strong> Took the kids to see Thomas the Train last summer. We stayed at the Red Caboose Motel in Pennsylvania. Each room was its own standalone caboose—a very unique place to stay. Second favorite was a trip to Costa Rica, where I got to watch baby sea turtles hatching.</p> <p><strong>Hobbies?</strong> Spending time with family, gardening/landscaping/playing in dirt, swimming, traveling, and reading.</p> <p><strong>Nickname(s)?</strong> Mom.
