One weekend, I would be in Marina Del Rey living in a beach house working on <em>Oliver</em>, and the next weekend, I could be in Napa, Poway, or Santa Clarita doing something totally different on a different show. I met so many amazing people, many of whom are still some of my best friends.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Favorite play performed at 91ֱ?</strong> To date, I would say <a href="https://flic.kr/s/aHskNs4kmC" target="_blank"><em>Cabaret</em></a> because it was the first show in the new <a href="/irene-and-alan-wurtzel-theater" target="_blank">Irene and Alan Wurtzel Theater</a>.</p> <p><strong>Favorite childhood memory?</strong> I’m a huge baseball fan, so one of my favorites is easily my first trip to Fenway Park on September 1, 1983. Find out why in this installment of Who Am I?</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Department and location on campus:</strong> Theater located in the <a href="/eric-baker-nord-performing-arts-annex" target="_blank">Nord Annex</a> / <a href="/hall-auditorium" target="_blank">Hall Auditorium</a> / <a href="/hall-annex" target="_blank">Hall Annex</a></p> <p><strong>Job title:</strong> Assistant Technical Director (which gets mistaken for computer work all the time).&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>What does your job entail? </strong>My job is to construct the sets used in all our performing spaces.</p> <p><strong>How many years at 91ֱ?</strong> 18</p> <p><strong>Favorite place in 91ֱ and why?</strong> My home, because it is where I relax the most.</p> <p><strong>Many theater sets at 91ֱ are very detailed—from apartment buildings to the fronts of homes!</strong> <strong>What excites you about this process?</strong> Each show we present is different from the last. There is no repetition which makes it seem as if you're starting over from scratch each time.</p> <p><strong>What are your top three set builds at 91ֱ?</strong> <em>Eurydice</em> (which I also appeared as an actor), <em>Street Scene</em>, and <em>Reefer Madness</em>.</p> <p><strong>What have been your most difficult designs?</strong> <a href="https://flic.kr/s/aHsk8bWxT8" target="_blank"><em>Street Scene</em></a> was very challenging as we built each part of the building separately to allow the painters to do their work, and then once painted, we put it all together which was incredibly challenging. But in the end it all came together.</p> <p><strong>What has building for film (because of COVID-19) been like for you?</strong> Is it different from building for a live audience? This past year I assembled four recording "booths" for our radio play <a href="https://flic.kr/s/aHsmS3UAVY" target="_blank"><em>The Misanthrope</em></a>. A green screen wall for our Zoom play <em>Fires in the Mirror</em>. And finally a set for <em>Twilight Bowl</em> which was filmed. Nothing was remarkably different than building a set for a live audience. One always wants as much detail on the set as possible, and if you had a chance to view <em>Twilight Bowl</em> maybe you saw all the set dressing.</p> <p><strong>What will you enjoy most about having a live audience in the theater again?</strong> Having a live audience is why I do theater. Getting that energy from the audience is unlike seeing a film. You know if they're with you or not. There is an excitement when the audience comes into the space, and more often than not can see the stage in a dimly lit glow. I find as an audience member I'm taking in the space and looking at the details. It brings me joy.</p> <p><strong>Hobbies?</strong> I am going to pick up my guitar again.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Nickname(s)?</strong> None that I know of. Sometimes my ears burn around certain people so they might have coined a phrase or two.</p> <p><strong>Favorite song?</strong> Too many, but most would be filled by the works of Bob Dylan (a personal hero).</p> <p><strong>Favorite food?</strong> My husband Matthew's cooking</p> <p><strong>Favorite movie?</strong> <em>Harold and Maude</em></p> <p><strong>Favorite quote?</strong> “When you ain't got nothing, you've got nothing to lose,” by Bob Dylan.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2021-06-17T12:00:00Z">Thu, 06/17/2021 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Yvonne Gay</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2551">Staff</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=32971">Opera Theater</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25441">Theater</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25331">Dance</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/theater" hreflang="und">Theater</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/dance" hreflang="und">Dance</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">David Bugher, assistant technical director of theater.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Bryan Rubin '18</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/images-2021/david_bugher.bryan_rubin_18_0.jpg?itok=fhO4ugC0" width="760" height="540" alt="David Bugher"> </div> Thu, 17 Jun 2021 16:35:50 +0000 ygay 346891 at Behind the Scenes /news/behind-scenes-0 <span>Behind the Scenes</span> <span><span>ygay</span></span> <span><time datetime="2020-06-26T14:38:29-04:00" title="Friday, June 26, 2020 - 14:38">Fri, 06/26/2020 - 14:38</time> </span> <div class="text-content field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>A bookcase in a theater department classroom is filled with small brown boxes, each with one open panel and a sheet of flat black cardboard in front. All this work reflects the collective efforts of the director, designer, artist, painters, carpenters, and costume and lighting departments, who start on these projects six months in advance.</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-left"><img alt="A man adjusts a stage light and three people push a large wall behind a curtain on a stage." height="270" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/images-2020/behind_the_scenes.jpg" width="380"> <figcaption>Anton Crooks, assistant technical director and master electrician in the Department of Theater and Dance, makes lighting adjustments (left) while students and theater staff work with the set (right) for the production of <em>All’s Well That Ends Well</em>. Photo credit: Jennifer Manna</figcaption> </figure> <p>“The process begins with the text and the director’s point of view. Analysis of the script, inspirational images, period research, and conceptual ideas are collected and discussed and eventually become the visual language for the production,” explains Carlson-Tarantowski, who will often create several different versions of a set or part of a set in model form so that she, the design team, and the director can better visualize the ramifications of different choices.&nbsp;</p> <p>“As ideas firm up, the set designer creates color sketches that suggest how the set might look when painted and furnished and finally, scale technical drawings are produced,” she continues. “The technical director will then take those drawings and interpret and adjust them for the carpenters in the scene shop and oversee the building process. Budgeting is a big part of the design process. We have to take into consideration the cost of a set in terms of materials, time, and labor well before actual construction begins.”</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-right"><img alt="A man builds a round floor for a theater production" height="312" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/images-2020/pericles.setbuild.manna.jpg" width="380"> <figcaption>Joseph Natt works on the set of <em>Pericles</em>. Photo credit: Yevhen Gulenko</figcaption> </figure> <p>This is where Joseph Natt, senior technical director of theater, opera, and dance comes in.&nbsp;</p> <p>Natt uses the drawings and 3D model that the set designer creates to price building materials. In order to make the cost of the set fit within the budget, adjustments to the design may be made. Once the budget is reconciled, and scenic elements are prioritized, construction begins. Set construction is typically completed in about six weeks.</p> <figure class="captioned-image obj-left"><img alt="Three performers in shrouds act on a round stage floor." height="270" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/images-2020/pericles.yevhengulenko.jpg" width="380"> <figcaption>The 2014 stage production of <em>Pericles</em>. Photo credit: Yevhen Gulenko</figcaption> </figure> <p>All of the technical elements of the production are brought together with the actors in dress rehearsal during “tech week,” where the theater team can take notes for adjustments and make finishing touches to the set.&nbsp;</p> <p>Many of the sets that are designed and constructed in the theater department present their own challenges. The two that stand out for Natt was the 2013 production of <em>Die Fledermaus</em>, which required the development of multiple sets. The other was the 2015 production of <em>Street Scene</em>.&nbsp;</p> <p>“We ended up building a multi-floor apartment building with a main door, center stairwell, and below-street-level apartments,” recalls Natt. “It was covered in brick, had large crown molding, windows that opened and closed, and was divided into several different apartments. We framed it and constructed it as you would a real house. It was very large and it took a lot of hours and material to construct.”</p> <div class="obj-center"> <figure class="captioned-image"><img alt="A set of an apartment building and people singing in front of it." height="507" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/images-2020/streetscene.seyfried.jpg" width="760"> <figcaption><em>Street Scene</em>. Photo credit: John Seyfried</figcaption> </figure> </div> <p>Construction projects can also overlap, particularly in the fall, when crews are finishing the build for the annual opera and starting technical rehearsals, while at the same time building the set for the fall theater production. But these are all challenges that come with the world of theater.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I always like working with my hands,” says Natt. “When I was growing up, I was always helping my dad work on cars and other things. Then when I went to school at Kent State University and got a degree in set design and technology, I realized that I was more interested in figuring out how to build and construct designs than designing them. So I enjoy carpentry in a more basic sense. I am not one to build you a beautiful rocking chair, but rather, build you the room for you to sit in and enjoy that rocking chair. Obviously seeing the final set constructed and seeing it as the designer and the director envisioned it gives me a sense of pride.</p> <p>“I think if any or all of the elements can pull the audience in and they forget that they are sitting in the theater, our job is complete. So for set carpenters, if we can build the scenery the way the designer and director intended, then the audience will be drawn in.”</p> <p>The collaborative nature of theater design and the excitement of seeing ideas come to life is something Carlson-Tarantowski enjoys. She plans to teach Scene Design II in the spring and welcomes students interested in scenic design to contact her for opportunities in and outside of the classroom.&nbsp;</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2020-06-26T12:00:00Z">Fri, 06/26/2020 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Yvonne Gay</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=32971">Opera Theater</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=25441">Theater</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/arts-and-sciences/departments/theater" hreflang="und">Theater</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">The set of All’s Well That Ends Well in Hall Auditorium in 2015.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-pin-school-page field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">Off</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-photo-gallery-top field--type-boolean field--label-hidden field__item">false</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-credit field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Jennifer Manna</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/width_760/public/content/news/images-2020/hallauditorium.jennifermanna.jpg?itok=frN39b53" width="760" height="540" alt="An empty auditorium facing a stage with columns on it."> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-flex-content field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden vertical-spacing--basic field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <div id="obj-28807" class="paragraph paragraph--type--para-el-photo-gallery paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="section--photo-gallery o-flex--photo-gallery"> <p class="header-tag">Photo Gallery</p> <div class="o-flex--photo-gallery__grid"> <div class="o-flex--photo-gallery--overlay"> <div class="o-flex--photo-gallery--overlay__content"> <h2> From Design to the Stage </h2> <button class="btn js-modal" data-modal-prefix-class="fullscreen" data-modal-content-id="28807" data-modal-background-click="disabled"> View photo gallery </button> </div> </div> <div class="o-flex--photo-gallery__grid__img-wrapper"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/photo-gallery/borne_sketch_copy.jpg" width="760" height="540" alt="An illustration of a man standing on a stage."> </div> <div class="o-flex--photo-gallery__grid__img-wrapper"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/photo-gallery/stage.bourne.seyfried.jpg" width="760" height="540" alt="Four people on stage during a theater production."> </div> <div class="o-flex--photo-gallery__grid__img-wrapper"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/photo-gallery/tutte.gay.jpg" width="760" height="363" alt="A 3-dimensional set model."> </div> <div class="o-flex--photo-gallery__grid__img-wrapper"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/content/news/photo-gallery/cosi_rendering.jpg" width="760" height="463" alt="A rendering of a set design with large ornate doors and large figures of a Victorian dressed man and woman. You’ll find yourself rooting for timid Albert, the most unlikely of heroes, whose secret longing for excitement turns the town upside down.</p> <p>“It’s about knowing you need to make a change in life, and getting that push to actually do it,” says Director Jonathon Field, associate professor of opera theater at 91ֱ. “Britten's operas always had an oppressed innocent. By the end, Albert sort of tells everybody off and breaks the chains that bind him.”</p> <p>Field selected <em>Albert Herring</em> in honor of the centennial anniversary of Britten’s birth.

Plus, he adds: “It is always nice to find an opera composer who writes comedies that are actually funny."
”</p> <p>Sung in English with supertitles, <em>Albert Herring</em> is perfect for young viewers and newcomers to opera. It features a standout cast of 91ֱ students and a deftly expressive score performed by the 91ֱ Orchestra and led by guest conductor Christopher Larkin.</p> <p>And now it's more affordable than ever:</p> <p>Adults who purchase tickets in advance may receive one free ticket with the purchase of a $15 ticket. (Discount also applies to $10 admission for seniors, 91ֱ staff, and alumni; and to $6 admission for 91ֱ students.)

Plus: All students age 18 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.

 Tickets may be purchased <a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/tickets/">online</a>, by calling 800-371-0178, or by visiting <a href="http://new.oberlin.edu/office/tickets/">Central Ticket Services</a> weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. Discounts apply only to advance purchases made by phone or in person, and all tickets are $3 more at the door.</p> <p>Showtimes are 8 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, March 12, 14, and 15; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item">Campus News</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2014-03-11T12:00:00Z">Tue, 03/11/2014 - 12:00</time> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-author field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Conservatory Communications Staff</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2356">Conservatory</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?tag=2546">Photo Feature</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-programs field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news?program=32971">Opera Theater</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/conservatory/divisions/vocal-studies" hreflang="und">Vocal Studies</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-image-caption field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">91ֱ Opera Theater presents Albert Herring.
