The last time the event was held was in 2019, just before the pandemic, which made this year鈥檚 crawl a new experience for both first- and second-year students.

鈥淢any students new to 91直播 or new to research are unfamiliar with the range of research happening on campus. Some may not feel that they belong in research. Lab Crawl directly addresses these concerns through a fun and low-stakes event,鈥 explains Director of CLEAR Sabriya Rosemond. 鈥淟earning about labs they may not have considered before can also open up new possibilities for students as they make decisions about their academic career.鈥

Similar to previous years, students were given the opportunity to visit and learn from peer Lab Crawl volunteers in several research fields, including anthropology, physics, astronomy, neuroscience, biochemistry and chemistry, and geology.

Peer-to-peer learning plays a vital role in the crawl鈥檚 success. Around 95 volunteers assisted with set-up and welcomed students into labs this year.

According to HHMI STEM Fellow Marcus Hill 鈥19, the peer-to-peer interactions during Lab Crawl echo the passion, enthusiasm, and excitement students have when they are learning in those spaces.

鈥淩esearch is more than just analyzing data and presenting at conferences, it鈥檚 about the relationships you build with the faculty and fellow research students,鈥 Hill says. 鈥淟ab Crawl provides an opportunity for [students] who haven鈥檛 had the experience to hear directly from those who play key roles in labs. [It鈥檚 a learning experience] that you can鈥檛 get from reading a poster or watching a video.鈥

A Lab Crawl tradition is the 鈥減articipation passports鈥 students are given and the stickers they receive to fill them. Stickers are provided at each lab they visit, and passports can be exchanged for pizza and a chance to win a T-shirt.

This year, by the end of the two-hour event, 85 students had turned in their participation passports, with many more making quick stops at lab demonstrations and tables as their time allotted, says CLEAR Administrative Assistant Pat Sturges. Some labs reported having more than 50 visitors.

By all accounts, [Lab Crawl] was a success, says Rosemond, whose staff have heard from several faculty members that students had already expressed interest in working in their labs.

鈥淚n my own visit to some labs, I noticed that the conversations were not just limited to the research, but how students can participate in research, their experiences in a given department, or even suggestions of fun or exciting courses and opportunities,鈥 says Rosemond. 鈥淭hese interactions are mutually beneficial. While attendees get to learn about the research, the student volunteers have the opportunity to practice communicating about their work to a broad audience which is an important skill for all researchers.鈥

Campus News
<div class="field the Science Center, but do you know about her most recent accomplishment? Find out in this installment of Who Am I?

Department and location on campus: I work in the chemistry and biochemistry and physics and astronomy departments in the Science Center.

Job title: Chemistry and Biochemistry Resources Coordinator / Procurement and Finance Coordinator in Physics and Astronomy

What does your job entail? I support chemistry and biochemistry as the facilities department manager and safety liaison. This includes project management working closely with our building manager, facilities, and the Environmental Health and Safety officer, as well as working on creating a safe environment in the department. I oversee the purchase of large equipment from order to installation. I also monitor all budgets and funding. For physics and astronomy, I oversee the operating budget and endowed funds and act as purchaser for the department.

How many years at 91直播? 29 years this August

Favorite place in 91直播 and why? Before COVID-19 changed our habits, I enjoyed meeting my friends for lunch at the Mandarin, where the owner not only knew our favorite meals, but also our favorite booth. I am excited to make new memories soon.

What do you enjoy most about your job? Solving problems. I am a solutions-driven person. Whether it be faculty, staff, or students in need of assistance, I am at my best when asked to help.

What do you enjoy most about the field of science? Although my direct work is in administration, I am in awe of the science that takes place in our building. Our faculty are so engaged with their research and teaching students. Our students are so eager to learn; their achievements here and afterwards are truly amazing. Knowing that all this is taking place helps me through the tough days.

Nickname(s)? Buttercup and Cindi Lou Who

Favorite Song? Anything I can dance to.

Favorite food? Chocolate

Favorite Movie? I enjoy movies with positive messages. One I watch to keep me focused is The Secret: Dare to Dream with Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas.

Recent Accomplishments: After watching our young students for so many years, I felt a nudge to go to college. It took approximately 10 years to reach my goal, taking classes in between working full time, dealing with health concerns, and assisting my parents in their final years. I kept going back until I acquired my certificate in Public Administration in 2020, receiving A's in every course. I believe strongly in helping others and plan on using my education to serve those in need.

Favorite Quote? "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results," by Albert Einstein.

Campus News

Wed, 06/09/2021 - 12:00

Yvonne Gay

Staff

Science Center

Physics

Biochemistry

Chemistry

Physics and Astronomy

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Cindi Manning, chemistry and biochemistry resources coordinator / procurement and finance coordinator in physics and astronomy.

Off

false

Tanya Rosen-Jones '97

Wed, 09 Jun 2021 15:23:22 +0000 ygay 346431 at This Week in Photos: A Classy View /news/week-photos-classy-view This Week in Photos: A Classy View ygay Fri, 03/19/2021 - 18:11

Long wooden beams brace cathedral ceilings in the large room students in Ganson鈥檚 class are seated in. He is particularly interested in how the growing trend of homeowners associations has affected municipal budgets, local governance, and property values. In other research, he has explored property tax limitations, local elections, land use regulation and housing markets. He has published in the Journal of Urban Economics, Regional Science & Urban Economics, and the National Tax Journal. He teaches classes in public economics and urban economics, principles of economics and intermediate microeconomics, and a seminar on housing.

鈥淭eaching at 91直播 is a particularly rewarding experience because I feel students are as invested in learning as I am in teaching. That鈥檚 because as the coordinator for 91直播鈥檚 Observatory and Taylor Planetarium, Lengyel spends most of his time atop Peters Hall. But Lengyel doesn鈥檛 just spend his time star gazing on the roof. In addition to running the observatory and planetarium, he also teaches the labs for Astronomy 100 and coordinates public observing sessions. And four years ago, when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) approached Lengyel about installing a meteor camera on campus, he became the point person for the project.

鈥淣ASA has something they call a 鈥楩ireball Network鈥 that consists of 20 all-sky cameras, in various locations, that detect very bright meteors, or 鈥榝ireballs,鈥欌 says Lengyel. 鈥淭wo NASA technicians came to 91直播, and I helped them install the camera and a computer.鈥

Sometimes, the camera captures incredible phenomena. This January, 91直播鈥檚 all-sky camera caught rare footage of a meteor streaking across the sky. So what exactly does NASA do with information such as this? The government agency collects it to learn more about near-Earth objects, their motion, size, and quantity. But if you鈥檙e not a NASA employee, you can see a clip of 91直播鈥檚 meteor footage captured here.

Get to know more about Lengyel in this Q&A.

Describe your role in six words.
I鈥檓 your guide to the sky.

What's your passion?
I love to teach astronomy. Almost everyone wants to learn more about the Universe. I love answering astronomy questions from people of all ages. Some of the toughest questions come from second graders, by the way.

Favorite song or musician?
Probably Gordon Lightfoot, because of the amazing number of outstanding songs that he has written since the 1960s. But that's a tough question, as there are so many great songwriters and performers out there.

What did you want to be when you were eight years old?
I wanted to be an astronomer and a teacher. I did both, and I continue to do both.

Favorite place on earth?
I love the high desert of the American West. Maybe a spot near Death Valley, where the night sky is so dark that the Milky Way nearly casts a shadow.

What's one thing we don't know about you?
I play bass in a classic rock band, the Men of Steele, named after Amherst Steele High School, where all of the members once taught. I play mandolin in the Front Porch Swatters, an Americana band with several members from 91直播. I also play guitar in the Starship Truckers, a two-man group that plays "music to make you smile," with my former college roommate who was also once a science teacher.

Campus News

Wed, 01/31/2018 - 12:00

Communications Staff

Q&A with鈥︹ is a series dedicated to introducing staff members to the 91直播 community.
