The last time the event was held was in 2019, just before the pandemic, which made this year鈥檚 crawl a new experience for both first- and second-year students.

鈥淢any students new to 91直播 or new to research are unfamiliar with the range of research happening on campus. Some may not feel that they belong in research. Lab Crawl directly addresses these concerns through a fun and low-stakes event,鈥 explains Director of CLEAR Sabriya Rosemond. 鈥淟earning about labs they may not have considered before can also open up new possibilities for students as they make decisions about their academic career.鈥

Similar to previous years, students were given the opportunity to visit and learn from peer Lab Crawl volunteers in several research fields, including anthropology, physics, astronomy, neuroscience, biochemistry and chemistry, and geology.

Peer-to-peer learning plays a vital role in the crawl鈥檚 success. Around 95 volunteers assisted with set-up and welcomed students into labs this year.

According to HHMI STEM Fellow Marcus Hill 鈥19, the peer-to-peer interactions during Lab Crawl echo the passion, enthusiasm, and excitement students have when they are learning in those spaces.

鈥淩esearch is more than just analyzing data and presenting at conferences, it鈥檚 about the relationships you build with the faculty and fellow research students,鈥 Hill says. 鈥淟ab Crawl provides an opportunity for [students] who haven鈥檛 had the experience to hear directly from those who play key roles in labs. [It鈥檚 a learning experience] that you can鈥檛 get from reading a poster or watching a video.鈥

A Lab Crawl tradition is the 鈥減articipation passports鈥 students are given and the stickers they receive to fill them. Stickers are provided at each lab they visit, and passports can be exchanged for pizza and a chance to win a T-shirt.

This year, by the end of the two-hour event, 85 students had turned in their participation passports, with many more making quick stops at lab demonstrations and tables as their time allotted, says CLEAR Administrative Assistant Pat Sturges. Some labs reported having more than 50 visitors.

By all accounts, [Lab Crawl] was a success, says Rosemond, whose staff have heard from several faculty members that students had already expressed interest in working in their labs.

鈥淚n my own visit to some labs, I noticed that the conversations were not just limited to the research, but how students can participate in research, their experiences in a given department, or even suggestions of fun or exciting courses and opportunities,鈥 says Rosemond. 鈥淭hese interactions are mutually beneficial. While attendees get to learn about the research, the student volunteers have the opportunity to practice communicating about their work to a broad audience which is an important skill for all researchers.鈥

Campus News
<div class="field The strips are stacked on top of each other and manipulated into a circular shape. Readings in practical and theoretical problems in archaeology help guide student鈥檚 survey of basic methods used for artifact analysis, and for recording, managing, and interpreting archaeological data. The course also considers emerging trends in archaeological data sharing and collections building that are facilitated through the use of digital media.

See more photos on 91直播鈥檚 Flickr page.

Professor of Anthropology Amy Margaris gives instructions to the class. While working in different locations, students created a virtual wayang, an intricate Indonesian performance practice that uses handmade puppets and incorporates live gamelan music.

According to rising senior and musical studies major Olivia Fink, her experience creating the piece was a collaborative and creative endeavor.

鈥淚 think my other classmates share the same sentiment鈥攐ur socially-distant wayang was a fun, creative outlet for all of us,鈥 she says. 鈥淓ach student had skills that were utilized in different ways; student Lexie Pratt is a visual artist and made individual puppets and sent them across the country to our classmates; audio-editors reworked the dialogue tracks to fit over gamelan music, editors edited, and of course our professor, Jennifer Fraser, helped in every way possible. My favorite part was the overwhelming sense of collaboration and community that I hadn't felt since I left 91直播. I think our wayang performance really was something for us all to look forward to and know we accomplished it together.鈥

Fraser shares the story of the original piece. Watch the full presentation below, and read the program notes.

From Fraser:

This semester, students in the course Epics, Puppets and Music (ETHN 202) were challenged to design their own wayang performance. The course took an interesting turn when in-person classes were suspended in March, and we switched to online learning. Through this all, students created something truly unique: a socially-distanced wayang.

Not only does the final product speak to their creativity, but it speaks to the depths of their learning in truly internalizing and embodying the principles of the Ramayana, a Sanskrit epic of ancient India, and its adaptation to the wayang format in Indonesia. The script they wrote embraces the ability of the art form to be responsive to the times, and it uses the Ramayana as the basis to talk about the spread of an infectious greed that traps the population inside. The only creature immune is Anoman, the monkey king, who sports a facemask for extra protection as he roams about, protected from the Covid Ogres who speak in rhyming verse. Rather than opting for recording individual scenes and stitching them together, the students decided to coordinate a performance over Zoom where the puppets meet in boxed-in screens.

The script is not only original, but collaboratively produced. Students all took on different tasks for the final production from editing the script, to making the puppets, narrating, speaking, moving the puppets, editing the soundtrack, and editing the whole thing. We collectively wrote the program notes and most of the music comes from former 91直播 students during Winter Term intensives in 91直播 or Indonesia. What they have produced is a brilliant piece of creative work in response to the current crisis, and truly exemplifies deep learning through experiential pedagogies. In some ways, I doubt the production would have been quite as creative had we proceeded with an on campus performance as planned. This is all their work. I had very little to do with it, and I would love to share it with the world.

Campus News

Mon, 06/01/2020 - 12:00

Communications Staff

These days, the classroom has taken on new meaning for both faculty and students at 91直播.
