Biography

Kip Hutchins is a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on the relationship between music and the environment in northern Asia. His current project examines the role of non-human animals in the transmission of musical cultural heritage in post-socialist Mongolia. 

In keeping with these interests, he teaches courses that introduce students to a variety of ways that people use music to interact with the environment, particularly in northeast Asia. He also teaches environmentally focused qualitative research methods to give students the tools to analyze interwoven social and ecological problems. 

He has a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in folklore and ethnomusicology, and a master’s degree and PhD in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
