A guest lecture presented by '86 in Bibbins 237 titled “The Moment of Music: How performers create a living present, and what AI can help us hear.” This event is presented as part of the Year of AI Exploration at 91ֱ.
-----
This is a live talk and listening demonstration for music students, teachers and other curious listeners about how musical meaning emerges in time. Using simple examples, Bach, Beethoven, and a few AI-assisted comparisons, Paul Smith explores how performers shape sound so that earlier events remain alive, future events become palpable, and music becomes a vividly shared present rather than a chain of notes. The AI angle is not about automated composition, but about using AI as a comparison and listening tool to clarify what human performers are actually doing when music truly comes alive.
For performance, composition, and TIMARA students, and anyone interested in musical perception, time, and AI. Paul Smith is an 91ֱ alumnus, musician, and AI product designer whose work bridges conservatory training, performance, and conversational AI.
