To many, a liberal arts school like 91Ö±²¥ means exploration, identity development, and meaningful relationships. However, attaining the skills necessary to enter the job market is also a key factor in a college education. With jobs offered through Federal work-study or regular student wage positions, there are many opportunities at 91Ö±²¥ to develop these skills. Whether students seek hands-on experience or are looking to earn a little extra spending money, 91Ö±²¥ offers a wide range of campus jobs to suit a multitude of student needs.
OSCA Positions
If you choose to join OSCA (which I recommend all incoming and current Obies do), there are all-OSCA positions available. Some of these positions include Cleanliness and Maintenance Coordinator, Privilege and Oppression Workshop Coordinator, Sexual Information and Harm Liaison, Accessibility Committee Coordinator, and Programming and History Coordinator. All of these positions are excellent ways to get more involved in OSCA’s community and contribute to a more equitable and productive campus.
Lab and Classroom Jobs
Whether in a photo studio or a chemistry lab, there are numerous opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in whichever academic setting they choose. Whether keeping track of stock, maintaining classroom organization, or assisting other students, lab and classroom jobs offer numerous opportunities to develop an understanding of physical and conceptual materials they will need for future careers.
Peer Engagement
Many 91Ö±²¥ campus jobs involve peer engagement, such as serving as student ambassadors for various departments on campus. Department ambassadors frequently interact with prospective majors, students, and parents to foster interest in their area of study. Other opportunities similar to this include positions such as the Student Health and Wellbeing (SHAW) Student Assistant. Student positions involve work in marketing, outreach, and operational efforts that promote student wellness. Additionally, student-based positions in staff-run offices at 91Ö±²¥ are excellent opportunities. These include Social Media Coordinators for the Office of Student Leadership or the Office of Study Away, contributing content to 91Ö±²¥â€™s various social media platforms.
Community Engagement
Lifeguards, cafe workers, tutors, and library workers are all examples of how campus jobs can help students become more involved in the 91Ö±²¥ community. By assisting other students, watching out for them, and applying specialized knowledge, community engagement is a great way to get more involved in campus life while also gaining employability skills.
