Between college and town lies a 13-acre, wooded green space called Tappan Square. Among the square’s assorted trees is Clark Bandstand, named for benefactor Arthur Clark. Erected in 1987 and designed by 91Ö±²¥ alumnus Julian Smith ’69, the pavilion’s architecture evokes the image of a carnival cart from India. His design was one of 50 finalists and 149 submissions chosen unanimously by a nine-member committee.
The bandstand represents the relative simplicity and modesty of the college and town, and serves as a gathering place for picnics, bonfires, concerts, and festivals of all kinds. Most performances are free, particularly in the summer.
